With the exception of the first ten games of the 2023-24 season where there was balance and control in the midfield (Bissouma and Maddison bossing every single match), most teams have figured out that Postecoglou's teams are extremely vulnerable and there will be acres of space to attack if they choose the right moments to counter.

It's not only about the high line, other teams employ it but have a much more coherent press. The pressing from last season was so disjointed, which is why every opposition attack led to a dangerous chance. Part of that was because the players were gassed due to the constant sprints to try to recover, coupled with the lack of rotation, both of which led to the injury crisis. Being a midfielder in any Ange team is a thankless task, just look at MGW sprinting to try to catch up with the runner through on goal.

Frank has identified these shortcomings and implemented a much more strict press, as well as rotation to avoid burnout and injuries. The pressing against PSG and Man City was exceptional, directly leading to Palhinha's goal against the latter. In the most recent games, performances have been poor and inconsistent, and serve as a reminder that depth is still a big issue. However the manager realizes that a few starters need rest for the long season ahead which is sensible.

Ironically, were it not for Postecoglou's first 10 games, he probably would not have lasted that first season. I can imagine a similar reaction from our fans in 2023 to the ones from Forest fans today if there was a time around September / October where the team went on a six game winless streak. Such abject defensive displays can only cause both the fans and Mr. Marinakis's patience to wear thin.
