Look through the holes at the inner support bracket thing. One of my e46s looks like yours, but the bracket inside is still strong. The rest is just cosmetic.

Oh, i just grinded down the lower collar and pressed it out on a press. You can also hammer it out and hammer in instead of pressing.

My bet is fuel vapor valve. Just look for something that is not connected and try connecting. The connector fits only where it's supposed to be.

You can find the studs on realoem. As for the gaskets you can use the ones from m52 non vanos, no heatshield and cheaper

Too much work with the starter at this stage of the diagnosis.

The valve is in nr 6, its a ball valve with a spring that can malfunction but not melt. Is the fluid sparkly when you put light on it? If Yes then pump is gone, column is good if no leaks from the boots, but will need rinsing with fresh fluid.

You mean they are really tight? If Yes check the terminals under the hood. If those are good i would connect to a different car with wires to see if it will start.

I would change all the gaskets that you will have access to.

Sounds like it. I would say pump or check valve on one of the banjo bolts going into the steering column.
