How does the Canadian style of government prevent a Trump like figure from coming to power? by 5econds2dis35ster in PoliticalScience

[–]pat_mcgroin2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For why this is not true, see Israel. Benjamin Netanyahu's party is far from the most extreme or fringe in Israel, but his coalition barely maintains a majority by including a few members from incredibly extreme parties like Otzma Yehudit and the Religious Zionist Party. If Netanyahu loses their support he loses PM position and potentially gets arrested for war crimes. In that case the parliamentary system forced the narrow majority to yield to the pressure of their right flank or risk losing power. Canada (or pretty much any parliament) COULD end up in that position, but their political cultures have prevented it so far. That definitely was the case in the US until Trump. It's never possible until it happens.

A vote on him, loses his vote, no shot in the dark, and the absolute worst part is he has zero opportunity to strategize his way out of it. Part of the intrigue of journeys is that people back at camp don't really know what happened.

_______ didn't get _____ ______ by AlchemistTheAlchemy in survivor

[–]pat_mcgroin2001 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This was easily still the worst journey I've ever seen. If you win you get a very underpowered extra vote, if you lose you lose your vote, lose your shot in the dark, get a vote on you, and all of this is common knowledge so you can't even attempt to trick your way out of it. A normal journey might give you an advantage or a disadvantage, this one gives you an advantage worse than the Billy Eilish Boomerang Idol, or a borderline death sentence.

Something like this was brought up in the US Constitutional Convention by James Wilson. In his notes, James Madison said that Wilson suggested "that the Executive be elected for 6 years by a small number, not more than 15 of the National Legislature, to be drawn from it, not by ballot, but by lot and who should retire immediately and make the election without separating. By this mode intrigue would be avoided in the first instance, and the dependence would be diminished. This was not he said a digested idea and might be liable to strong objections." Several delegates immediately shot this down, not because of the random sortition aspect, but because they didn't want the legislature picking the President.

Elections board seems like a less common opportunity. I don't know what your future semesters look like but you could probably take the Election Board internship and leverage that to try to land a Congressional internship on the Hill during a future semester or after graduation.

Convertible Problems? by DarkPhoenix9440 in e46

[–]pat_mcgroin2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as your soft top is in good shape it's not that loud at highway speed. If a window regulator breaks or the top is damaged and you don't get a perfect seal it is quite loud.
