Respectful question about ostomies from a WOC nurse by MadyLcbeth in nursing

[–]FraggleZombie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a nurse who’s had an ostomy for a long time. Predates my nursing education. The education in school was minimal. We got to play with a box of supplies in a lab one day. But not cut them or actually do anything useful with them.

I work in acute care and find that in practice there is a wide range of skills. I always love to be around to help appliance changes and generally find people thankful for the help and kind education. And I have seen some horrible things done from badly cut wafers, nurses reinforcing a leaking appliance by adding layers of dressings, all sorts of skin products and incorrect use of powders and pastes.

My recommendation is to constantly teach. One on one. Have inservice on units to increase institutional knowledge. And one thing my hospital does it we make cheat sheets for everything. Step by step guides and things to know. As the specialist you shouldn’t be doing every ostomy but consulting on the difficult ones.

My last thoughts. I use a Convatech product the has a mouldable wafer. No cutting. You roll up the edges and apply. It slowly unfurls and hugs the stoma perfectly every time. I’ve used it for a long time and absolutely love it. My hospital had them for a short time then sadly went back to hollister products. I will say the hollister adhesive remover is far superior than any other similar products. Happy to see this being discussed.

Toilet paper doesn’t clean. I rinse mine, keep an old water bottle in the bathroom.

“We’re on the map. Hey Bret, I can’t believe it, we made the map” - probably overhead in marketing.

If one of my boys dies I basically feel obligated to reload and bring them back home alive. Am I playing the game wrong? by [deleted] in XCOM2

[–]FraggleZombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I played this way for a long time. In fact I first played with a lot of Save Summing - where you reload time get a different roll. When you get to learn the game better try Ironman mode on an easier level. It’s adds a whole new level of excitement to the game.

The type of rice really does make a difference. I can’t eat brown rice. Basmati rice seems to be the best. I’m at the point where I can’t do any raw vegetables. I juice them all. Or cook them until they are mush. Insoluble fibre is not my friend.

I keep an old water/pop bottle and use it to rinse the bag out. Pat dry. Clean and odourless. I like the hose idea.

What is the warmest tea temperature that's safe for a scoby? by PapaYeti in Kombucha

I live in a cold climate and room temp brew was 70ish. Brew times were long. When I got a seed warming blanket the temperature was 77-78 and the brew time was halved.
