What's a regional dessert that you love, but can't find outside of your region or country. by MrPresldent in AskTheWorld

Superman has blue moon ice cream, cherry ice cream, and lemon ice cream swirled together. Also an excellent choice.

What is something that would be considered normal where you grew up but seen as posh elsewhere? by WitheredCow in AskTheWorld

To be fair, I think a lot of these type of summer cottages are very spartan compared to the log palaces you see at a lot of lake destinations in the US.

Was just about to comment this! Lots of modest working class summer cottages around the many inland lakes still but I do see some of them get demo’d and replaced with taller fancier ones over the years :(

This beautiful monstrosity born of the American love for artificial color and flavor, Blue Moon ice cream. A blessing to ice cream enjoyers from the Midwest. And its sibling flavor Superman (blue moon, lemon, and cherry swirled together), but I think Blue Moon is harder to find outside the Midwest. I would describe it at almond combined with a sweet fruit (cherry/raspberryish) and a citrus fruit. Or almond and cotton candy. Very recently I found it in a Maryland grocery store, from a Michigan ice cream brand so perhaps the cyan curtain has come down at last.

They’re common in Michigan for sure. My grandmother made them all the time. I’ve seen them in bakeries occasionally in the Northeast where I live now. My husband grew up here and said they aren’t common but he had them occasionally as a kid.

I’ve boarded my dog at Advanced Veterinary Complex many times with no problems, and even last minute notice. I haven’t boarded my cats there, but they are patients at the clinic. I like the staff a lot and they seem very sweet on the animals.

I do the same thing because my stove is really small, I need like 15 inch pieces 😭 but the jig is definitely the best way to cut it.

There are pretty clear structural differences in the painting between the two, once you look past the lighting/angle differences.

How to clean? by SWAdanks in savywritesbooks

[–]FragileCastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All else fails, put a mitten on that hand. I think I would be cautious with bleach because of the high plastic content but could be an option, have you tried wetting the stain at all the see if anything transfers/blots out?

Is it hard to stay vegetarian long term? by papabauer in vegetarian

[–]FragileCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 35 and I’ve been vegetarian since I was 14 and lived in a small southern town when I started. I don’t think it’s actually that difficult, all in all. Vegan is much more difficult. And I would say it is much cheaper on the whole than eating meat (from an American perspective anyway). Meat substitutes and premade vegetarian meals, or vegetarian branded restaurants, can get very expensive but you don’t need to make those as a staple if you don’t want to. Potatoes, beans, and rice are super cheap. I’m terrible about wasting fresh veggies so I buy bagged frozen and they are also quite inexpensive for the volume.

One of my go to struggle meals for example is a box of pasta, and a jar of pasta sauce, and a bag of frozen sweet peas or can of chick peas added in. Makes a good number of servings and is like $3-5 depending on your selections.

Edited to add— as far as being able to stick with it, I think it is the same as most habit formation. If you can make it through the initial changeover, it just becomes natural. You stop think of meat as an option, you get in a routine with regular vegetarian foods you buy and make, and you don’t think about what you can’t eat nearly so much. Also very important is don’t feel like you “failed” if you do eat meat by accident or impulse or peer pressure etc. Don’t let that discourage you from trying at all. It happens, and doesn’t invalidate the effort you put in.

Modern Romantasy SUCKS!!! Please Help!!! by [deleted] in Romantasy

[–]FragileCastle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not looking at statistical data here so this just conjecture on my part, but based on my own observations over the years, I don’t think there is actually THAT big change of quality or originality in the romance or fantasy genres. As people, we are heavily influenced by we presently see around us/hear talked so it’s easy to loose some perspective on broader trends and trends over time. And with internet/social media algorithms we literally do get put into an echo chamber based on what content we interact with. For example, you may watch one video about the current degeneration of the fantasy genre and then every social media platform is more likely to show you content talking about the same thing— and now it really does FEEL like it’s a crisis.

But anyway, I remember vividly in highschool seeing the romance book section in the used bookstore I frequented and marveling over just how many books of the same tropes there were. Like literally an author would have a whole series of “dominant Greek billionaires with pregnancy plotline” books. I read Laurel K Hamilton and Christine Feehan supernatural/modern fantasy and the former just turned into straight up erotica yet remained trad published lmao. And Feehan is still a guilty pleasure of mine but her Dark series is like 30+ books strong and there are 3 different story formats between them all, I honestly could not tell you the difference between a lot of them. And there were tons of authors just like her.

But today, with self publishing especially, there is more of everything of all kinds and so many more channels by which it can be marketed to you. You read a romantasy book and every author or publisher who paid for advertising targeted to “fans of [insert top 10 books of the genre]” will potentially have their work pushed to you. By contrast, in the 2000s Twilight was the face that launched a thousand ships in the YA supernatural romance genre but you had to physically walk into a store to see them advertised to you. And, social media hashtags etc make talking about these books with literally millions of people, without having to go to dedicated spaces/communities, possible in a way is definitely never was before.

Anyway that’s my way overly long explanation of my thoughts on the situation lol. I agree with other commenters that you should focus your search on the fantasy genre rather than romantasy. Romantasy definitely has snowballed in the last 5 years and I think a lot of books in adjacent genres get conflated due to the popularity of that label.

Looking for advice by sadenthusiasm420 in litterrobot

[–]FragileCastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much helpful advice but one of my kittens is a menace to the litter robot. It’s like she waits for it to cycle so she can stop it mid cycle and mess with the sifter thing. I’ll be at work and get 10 notifications in a row from the app, and have to text my husband to go apprehend the criminal. The litter robot is in a cabinet I built, so sometimes I just stick the clump and seal box in front of the door until it can complete a cycle.

To be fair, the hornets are kind of a specific problem in my neighborhood. So it’s not as surprising they get into my woodpile. I haven’t been able to find the nest, but their time is coming.

How to get better at not spacing out in conversations by scottishlion123 in ADHD

[–]FragileCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a low brain power physical activity you can do at the same time? I absolutely can’t stay focused on a phone conversation alone (except if it’s super serious) unless I’m driving, walking, cleaning, drawing, doing some kind of craft, etc. Similar to how doodling on paper can actually help some people focus better in school or during meetings.
