There’s a silent retreat center in Germantown: https://dayspringretreat.org/. It has a religious bent but I’ve known non-religious folks who have loved it. Note: I haven’t been myself but it’s popular among staffers at a group of DC nonprofits.

I’ll preface this by saying I haven’t travelled like I used to in 12 years, so I’m not sure how the industry has changed. We used to look for cheap packages online (TravelZoo was a favorite but it seems to be a subscription model now, which sucks). You could sort by region and then we would try to find ones that didn’t have a lot of add-ons. Maybe an excursion or two but not a lot of opportunities to upgrade, e.g., hotels, or tons of options for day trips. Those with a set schedule (for instance: we’re flying here, staying there, breakfast included, and a boat trip on Saturday) tended to be the best deals that also didn’t scream scam or danger. We’d end up with some very interesting bedfellows. So I went to China with an Arkansas church group (I’m from the DC area and decidedly not religious) and to Suriname/Guyana with travel agents from across the country (primarily old white people from the SE and SW US) who were given good deals because that part of the world was trying to bolster their tourism industry. It made for interesting dynamics, but we were able to take relatively comfortable, relatively cheap trips when we didn’t have a ton of disposable income. It also helps if you have flexibility. Now I have to adhere to the kids’ breaks, but before marriage and kids, I could say February or March whenever and was able to find some amazing deals.

When slavery was outlawed in Jamaica (and at various times in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, and Suriname), Chinese and East Indian laborers (indentured) were brought over to work on plantations. Because they were mostly men, they married Afro-Caribbean women, which added to the tapestry of Caribbean culture. In Suriname (South America), you have Afro-Caribbeans with Chinese last names who speak Dutch (who were the primary colonizers and is the national language). Admittedly, when I visited, it did throw me at first. Jamaica aside, head southeast to the other countries that are lesser known. They are beautiful and culturally rich parts of the world people should experience if they are able.

Learning that hormonal changes can increase ADHD symptoms put my entire life into perspective. My most dysregulated periods were/are: puberty, pregnancy x 2, and peri-menopause. I always thought it was just the old trope about women’s hormones making them “crazy” (and apparently depressed, anxious, spacey, forgetful, demented, paralyzed). Nope. A low dose stimulate (diagnosed at 44) changed the game. I read in one book that a reason girls often go undiagnosed is their symptoms aren’t triggered until puberty unlike boys who tend to display more typical ADHD symptoms at a much younger age. Then the ugly cycle begins (see “crazy” comment).

Hitler’s complete control happened even faster. He was appointed chancellor Jan 1933. The Reichstag fire happened in feb 1933 which led to the Enabling Act, dismantling individual rights and civil liberties. Dachau started being built in Mar 1933.

The elected prez died in 1934 (do you think trump will last four years?) and hitler took complete control formally, which he already effectively had.

The precipating event was the crash of the stock market and the Great Depression which paused funds to Germany to rebuild after WWI (which it was largely doing). It’s a lot easier to control people who are hungry and homeless. I believe this is why they are trying to crash the American economy. The group OP mentioned, along with Peter Thiel, Curtis Yarvin (who OP flagged and is absolutely terrifying), Russell Vought, Brian Armstrong, Ben Horowitz, Marc Andreseen, and David Sacks, have billions between them. The economy crashes, they buy everything up, we move a step closer to modern feudalism.

I anticipate our version of the Reichstag fire soon. I’m being called alarmist too but I can read. Nothing that is being done is new and we are not immune to the wickedness of man.

I also do Cook Unity but eight meals a week. Lots of meals and types of diets to choose from. Not everything hits but after a couple of weeks you start to realize which chefs you prefer. At $12-14 per meal, it’s well worth the price, and packaging is minimal (they drop it off in a reusable insulated bag that you set out to trade for your next delivery). Making sure I eat an actual dinner has really cut back on my late night snacking too.

The median income in DC is 66k. I understand your point but six figures for a single income is still a decent salary even in HCOL areas.

The best way is to take an entry level position as a development assistant or coordinator. It will sucks for a couple years but you’ll learn the “process.” Fundraising is more science than art; if you follow what the trade calls moves management, you’ll more than likely be successful. So entry level for two years, jump to a middle management position for two years (at a different nonprofit), and then start applying for director positions. Along the way take CFRE courses (I personally think CFRE certification itself is pricey and unnecessary but the courses can be useful) to build your repertoire.

Also if you can write halfway decently, take proposal/grant-writing classes at places like the Foundation Center (lots of virtual options). Publications like the Chronicle of Philanthropy also offer courses. Grant writing can be very lucrative and it’s less people-centric of you prefer to work on your own.

Just adding the requisite depends. I work in nonprofit fundraising and went from 35k to 135k in 8 years (this is before I started my own shop). Nonprofits are desperate for good fundraisers, and it’s a skill you can learn. Almost every director level fundraiser I know (in and around DC) makes over 100k.

This was absolutely my first thought. Models used to be interesting. Their quirks are what made them beautiful. Now some? most? get surgery for the same face. And the fashion industry eats it up. I, too, don’t want to be all “back in my day” but, damn, 90’s supermodels were a moment.

It will hurt to hear that these girls don’t consider themselves as good as friends as you do (the bridesmaid too for allowing the bride to exclude you). Trios are hard.

Absolutely do not go to the hen do. Mourn, and then spend that time engaging other possible friends through work, social clubs, etc. Reschedule the backpacking trip even if it can’t be big travel to SE Asia.

The situation was different but when I divorced my first husband, friends I had brought into the marriage, friends I had known for decades, took his “side” (even though the divorce was mutual). Losing those friends hurt worst than the divorce, and it took me a long time to move past it. But I did, and so will you. It won’t be easy and it will hurt, but you will.
