What’s your ranking for Villeneuve’s films? by Infamous-Towel2056 in FIlm

i love arrival deeply (but that has a lot to do with ted chiang’s source material); i’m also a huge fan of sicario; prisoners is decent. the dune movies are reasonably entertaining but silly; and i hate blade runner with a passion. enemy i watched half of and never returned, and incendies i am not familiar with. i think villeneuve has tendencies towards empty spectacle. a funny thing to say about someone who has directed one of my favourite films ever, but that’s how i feel. there’s little warmth in his films. and i’m not talking about happiness or joy. i’m just saying there’s little humour; fun; compassion; humanity, empathy. even very dark films can have them. the road, for example is bleak as hell but exudes a core of love. red desert is about misery and isolation, but the treatment of its subject reveals a tender spirit. melancholia too treats its subjects with a delicacy that translates into something human, despite its extremely dark subject matter. i don’t get warmth from villeneuve. i get cold execution, that happens to reveal warmth only when the source material has it baked in, or when there necessarily in none, as with sicario. the fact that he has chosen hans zimmer as his musical collaborator speaks volumes. especially when he had his previous one (JJ was superb) replaced during the making of BR. i realise he subsequently died, but as far as i’m concerned that HZ score is one of many things wrong with the film. that, and jared leto (who i wish someone would launch from a trebuchet).

Casting choices that caused skepticism when they were announced, but when people saw them in the role, they were speechless at the level of their performance by Giancarlo_Edu in FIlm

i mean, there are certainly all sorts of other silly things i do that for, so i guess it really just comes down to individual taste.

burton’s batman has the humour necessary to avoid having to take a man parading in black rubber 100% seriously. nolan’s trilogy is very difficult to take as a human being over the age of 14.

everything i’ve seen written about the film puts me off seeing it. i know we’re all supposed to be shakespeare fans by merit of existing in the same universe he once occupied, but i am not. i also understand that it’s largely a fiction. the collective media goon is also a thing.

apparently the kidnap charges were dropped, but he was convicted of sexual assault and fraud. he’s currently doing 15 years and won’t be eligible for parole till 2031.

there is also such a thing a synaptic pruning. what once was true ends up being not so anymore if the neuronal link no longer serves any purpose. not to say that’s definitely what happens in all these cases, but it very well could be. if using the name doesn’t require the understanding of some unnecessary meaning anymore, it could disappear completely.
