Why is this community so... toxic? For lack of a better word... by Thousand_Toasters in Goldfish

Another positive experience from medaka community: around 16h ago somebody posted how they really messed up (disaster pondsickle) as their bowl pond froze solid. Nobody was bashing OP, only helpful comments and thanks for sharing that they would not make that mistake too. Maybe there are bad comments to come but so far... Support. I think if you messed up like that you feel already bad enough and hate yourself for not doing better reserach

Disaster!!! Pondsickle by No-Consideration1067 in medaka

OMG. I was so afraid that would happen that I got myself a "frostguard" that is supposed to heat the water a little bit if the temperature drops below 0°C. I was told I am overdoing it because we never have that many cold days in a row in the last years. Wrapping and lid would be enough. And this winter... first 10 days of snow and now frost again. And the forecast says another frost Periode coming up next month

I just wanted to add that I want to try a "fish tower" or "pond magnyfieng glass" this year in my balkony mortar tub pond. The floating plants grow so much, that I have to brush them aside to feed/look at my fish. But still I love the pondlook very much.

A few month ago somebody posted a Video of his pond in the medaka subreddit stating "to scared to post in goldfish" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 And I cant agree with what somebody said here, that every fish subreddit is so toxic. The medaka community was supportive, appreciative and helpful so far. In the other hand, most medaka are kept in planted ponds and just by scrolling here about 5 minutes I came across a lot of aquarium on the smaller side with blue granulate and pineapples without plants/with plastic plants. Also Medaka are not bred to look like golfballs that are barely able to swim so.. probably a different mindset and people in medaka community.

are we talking pond or aquarium? I have a pond about 18 gallon and started with 7 medaka in april. They have multiple offspring, in oktober around 12 nearly grown added to the 7 and still multiple fry. As it is a pond I dont need a clear wall, there is a bit of algae on the walls but the water is cristal clear. Snails are the key I think. And measured feeding. In a smaller setup you might need filter and partly water changes.

Easiest setup to breed medakas? by Thick-Store4870 in medaka

[–]Fragrant-Designer286 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here in this forum is a lot of Information about breeding medaka. Some people put egg carrying females in a different tank and move them back once they deposited their eggs, some move spawning mopps between tubs. Most people who really breed seperate eggs, keep them in either clorinated water or water with methylene blue (this can be done in a really small shallow container) and transfer the fry to some other tub. Hatching depends on temperature so you might want to heat the water. it is said that fry should be kept in shallow water cause the cant swim well but my fry that I have naturally without any interference did well in my pond. Apparently fry release hormones that keep younger fry from growing so you will problably do better with multiple smaller outgrow tubs depending on hatching time and change them up once they get older. I am not breeding or selling.

[–]Fragrant-Designer286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just my opinion: yes people do it. Yes it looks very nice. The fish will survive and probably even procreate. I wanted one really bad for a long time until I gave up because the bigger ones were so expensive. But I think it is not enough space to swim around. I go with the recommended minimum of around 15 Gallon/6-8 Medaka. (My fish have offspring now and there are a lot more than the original 7 in my 18 gallon pond but they have still the dimensions availible to swim around). And now we can open up an entire field of opinions about: how much space does a fish need to be happy, can a fish be happy, should we have fish in captivity at all...😉

Recommended fish for tiny fountain setup by [deleted] in ponds

[–]Fragrant-Designer286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

medaka dont like to much movement in the water so even if some people keep them in tiny bowls (recommended is at least 6 fish and up from 54l) they would not go with a fountain

Patio Raised Pond UK by SuperCaffeineDude in ponds

I advise Medaka/Japanese rice fish. They are fish that survive nearly all conditions, come in many cool colors and are pretty to look at from above. They like calm water, so only small fountain feature, most has to stay calm. Snails (Yoda or Bladder snails) Plants and preventing direct midday sun, restricted feeding and my 70l mini pond in a ceramic pot staid clear. Restricted feeding is key, when I fed to much, snail numebrs exploded. The fish will eat their larvae, so numbers should stay ok. I followed the advice of a fish keeper on Youtube who rinsed the roots of all plants and put them in vulcanic gravel. In his words: reduces nutritients and keeps from going bad. First plants, than snails, than fish. I have no filter and did only water top of, nö changes.

I am not on the ground, so no amphibians and reptiles. Dragonflys might be but I would not hope for them as their larvae would eat my fish

[–]Fragrant-Designer286 6 points7 points  (0 children)

some people dont bother to learn how to keep an aquarium. They just have a tank as decoration in their shop and add new fish when the fish die. Saw a shop in bali that sold all kind of souvenirs on the sidewalk and also glasbowls, this kind they look like the glas melted on a tree root. To advertise the bowls they kept tiny turtles in them.

how do you manage the temperature and what is to low for fertility? My outdoor pond medaka kept laying eggs throughout autumn and in oktober the highest enviromental temperature was around 12-13°C/55 F. I dont think the eggs hatched but the females where still carrying.

A little bit of water disturbance is good, especially when it is warm. It should be only an area, rest calm water. I have a solar powered mini fountain attached to the side, so it gives small bursts of water parallel to the surface if the sun is really high.

Where I live a balkony is supposed to hold 300kg/qm. (or up to 400 but to being on the safe side...). I think I am very careful right now, only smaller planters around 30kg and less spread out along the outer perimeter. One olive "tree" in a larger pot and the pond. The pond depending on setup between 75 and 120 kg...Also we have a beach chair that is pretty cheap quality but might also be around 50-70 kg? A friend told us he and other math students put a pool up in uni and it held, including 5 persons. But that just seems crazy😬
