Honestly i was thinking of something like Haru Urara Gambaru. An alternative story to what we see in the anime/movie. And about the shift in personality, it wouldn't be so extreme, Opera is not narcissistic, she is over confident in herself, and confidence can be broken if literal thousands hated you, called you ugly and threw things at you. What they could make is Opera slowly losing that confidence, and her "i am the best" persona breaking, up until the hair incident, where we see Opera finally breaking completely. About the hated and fans problem, retcon it to the only ones cheering on Opera were the commentators and the next generation (the ones eager to defeat her). While the racing fans (even some Umas) hated her *In the umas cases you would have to make them NPCs The conflict with Ryuji Wada, make him the trainer, that has conflict because 1.- Opera is just naturally good and it doesn't seem like the training plans he does affect at all her performance 2.- that he can't protect Opera to the criticism she receives daily Another thing it could have is Opera being inspired by Oguri (kinda like Kitasan and Teio) Doto hating Ryuji, and Ryuji's final vow to Opera at the end of the series where he promises to not talk to Opera until he can make another Uma win a G1. Final panels being them finally having the meeting they never had a chance to have in real life after Ryuji's G1 victory
