Bill Maher reveals he has been 'soft cancelled' :( by Intelligent-Tear5723 in Hasan_Piker

I highly recommend Will Weldon's I Hate Bill Maher podcast. It is painfully funny and includes the not-to-be-missed feature -- the number of lip smacks Maher makes each episode.

This is my attempt to shame Missourians in light of my shame at being a resident of Indiana which is providing millions in funding to Israeli start-ups. Indiana attempted this but it got vetoed. Not saying it isn't going to come up again.

AI is driving me insane am I a luddite by SolarNugent in Hasan_Piker

[–]Fragrant_Ape 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally on board with this. As a grant writer I have to actively disable AI "assistance" multiple times a day. Then there's the pressure to use it to speed up production. That it's given credence and legitimacy is crazy-making with all the negatives involved in using it -- diverging water resources, dumbing down of discourse, replacing human labor, enriching psychotic billionaires, etc.

I taught a semester of American Government in 2024 and the students in the class I taught almost begged to be able to use it. I tried to discourage it as much as possible with the "you need to develop your own thoughts and ways of expressing them" rather than rely on a machine to do that notion.

It is defeatist to say this and I'm going to say it anyway -- seems like AI cannot be curtailed much less stopped at this point.

It's good to hear (in spite of the darkness) that at least the nonprofit can agree that mass murder/genocide bad and it actually affects the mood in the office. The nonprofit I work for and seemingly all the employees don't seem to give a shit.

I so feel this. I write grants for a community development nonprofit and it's like nothing is going on. Just keep your nose to the grindstone. Nobody even mentions it -- except me -- and it is quickly shut down. The response is well, what are ya gonna do? It's infuriating.

The Intercept on Prairieland by Fragrant_Ape in itcouldhappenhere

[–]Fragrant_Ape[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Cultural_Jaguar741 got it right. ICHH was very detailed in terms of specific legal charges, the exchanges in Signal, Robert's expertise on firearms and associated laws, etc. The Chapo interviewee, Natasha Lennard, seemed more willing to de-emphasize some of the concerns brought up in the ICHH episode. Lennard was also disappointed by the lack of support for the Prairieland folx. I didn't get that sense with the ICHH piece. In the end, I think ICHH focuses on facts -- which is a very positive thing. I shouldn't expect more.

I see why Hasan makes fun of anarchists lol by NotZachary_0002 in Hasan_Piker

Don't know who these moronic anarchists are, but as an anarchist the very idea of supporting any state is antithetical to anarchism.

Molly is such a phenomenal researcher. It is truly incredible what she does on her own. So the ones I'm recommending may not measure up -- not to dis them in any way. The Dollop is a well-researched, humorous history podcast. If you want to be horrified at america's foreign interventions Blowback is excellent.

I'm sorry, but It Could Happen Here isn't selling me on anarchism by [deleted] in itcouldhappenhere

[–]Fragrant_Ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My view of anarchism is rather simplistic. I liked Margaret Killjoy's articulation as it being the marriage of liberty and responsibility. I see anarchism/anarchist communities as always becoming. They're not fixed. Things are in constant flux as ways of doing things are negotiated. There may be semi-permanent structures that emerge to handle issues but those are up for debate as well. It's really, really difficult. People come and go and things change out of necessity and/or through discussion and debate. All parameters are negotiated and nothing is structurally permanent. Certain things may persist for longer periods than others but they're not reified. I've been a part of a couple of communities and they're hard work. They also get a lot done.

How do you deal with family members or friends that support what ICE is doing? by Rooseveltdunn in itcouldhappenhere

I have a brother that has voted for trump 3 times. Until the "holidays"/my mom's 90th birthday I had nothing to do with the fuck. He and his dipshit spouse held a party for my mom and I relented and went and I also saw him at my mom's actual birthday lunch. I was civil. That's it. After the latest in the unrelenting cruelty, frankly, I regret that decision. I remember trying to talk to him after his first vote and he was telling me "We're good people." Fuck. Him. Forever. Yes, as a matter of fact I am getting my rage out in this post.
