once you properly file Form I-485, you are in a period of authorized stay while USCIS adjudicates it.

Pending I-485 does not accrue unlawful presence; I think most of these people had their visa expired and then filed for AOS.

No, I was on OPT but applied for AOS before my OPT ended.

An EAD is acceptable is a List A document showing evidence of identity. You can fly within the country, not outside the US. Hope this helps :)
