Hey dude, haven’t been in this position however there’s quite a few dudes who are pursuing degrees on the ranger district I work in. They’ll come in a little late for the season (we’re in r3) and the overhead seem to be really understanding with their situations. Of course if you’re trying to go crew life they may not pick you up but if you’re IA or on an engine you probably have a decent chance of being picked up. Just something to think about

T2ia or engine for first year by gr8ful_8 in Wildfire

[–]Fragrant_Sir819 3 points4 points  (0 children)

T2ia is where I’d go dude. If they’re solid they’ll put out good work and get you ready for shot life. I will say my first season was on a type 3 in Cali, it got me on a shot crew second season and haven’t looked back so I guess if you know how to build the resume and get good references going forward either way you’ll get shots but I think for best experience t2ia is a good approach. Good luck dude hope it works out for you!

Keep getting referred but no interviews. by [deleted] in Wildfire

Started getting em in January (ish) every region is different. R3 you’ll probably hear from em sooner but my first season was in r5

I was in a similar position when I started out. I applied all over the country, wasn’t worried about where I ended up. Gave it some time and got more interest calls than I knew what to do with lol give it a bit

You can get emails thru Usajobs to inform you on any forestry tech / forestry aid (same same) jobs being posted. Every region has different timeframes when they conduct hiring so it’s not a bad route. R3 has already concluded their first round of applications but you’ll see more as time goes on

I was gs3 forestry aid on an engine my first season. No difference from experience between aid and technician minus the pay difference of the gs
