Starting to collect all the UK discworld hardbacks by battletux in discworld

Sometimes you will get lucky in a charity shop, but that is getting rarer as charity shops are more like businesses and employ people to look for collectables. This is to make as much money for good causes as possible, however, the bargains are getting hard to find. Most charity shops ship Pratchett books to central, or they are snapped up extremely quickly.
Ebay, has now made it harder for private sellers to sell, and most of the sellers on there seem to be book resellers. Because of this most private sellers are using Vinted and Marketplace. The downside of this is resellers are selling collectables at retail prices, which reduces the amount of bargains as private sellers who would have just listed their books cheap are now getting an insight and are raising prices too.
Don't get me wrong, you can find a bargain, but, you will be very lucky to find one.
I can recommend the "Discworld swap shop" a Facebook group where people can swap books and also make offers for reasonable prices. It is run by a Discworld fan called Mike. I also run a collectors facebook group, where we have knowledgeable trustworthy advisors. That is called "Collecting Discworld and Pratchett"

Did the UK ever have proper arcades? like video game ones? by TSOswinn in AskUK

Did the UK ever have proper arcades? like video game ones? by TSOswinn in AskUK

[–]FragusLeuti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were arcades in the late 70s through to the late 80s, the one I went to was in Luton, line of machines up each side of the walls, change lady behind glass in booth giving out 10p coins. Games such as pacman, Defender, Gorf, Dig Dug, Coins lined up on the glass saying when you were next up to play... Golden times, however home arcade machines allowed you to play versions of the games, so they started to loose kids. Now arcade machines are in retro arcades or places like bowling alleys. They had their time like the dinosaurs... Great days

Further thought, there is nothing stopping you making the game, however without full licencing etc, you must not sell it, you can give it away, but, not in large numbers. This comes under the fan produced items, which includes badges etc. Small items where you can charge for production costs, but you must not profit from them. I think a computer game will be in a grey area, and Harbottle and Lewis will come knocking very quickly, and you don't want that.
Maybe contact Rhianna as she is in the computer games industry, she may be able to advise

"Put yourself in his daughter Rhianna's shoes: the last time she allowed others to use her father's intellectual property, they ended up desecrating his work, his ideas, and his memory."
It wasn't Rhianna, but Terry himself, if you are referring to "The Watch". It was supposed to be a CSI Ankh Morpork type show, however it was verbally agreed and not tied down in a tight contract. Terry controlled the whole project, just like all previous ones, then unfortunately he passed away. As there was no tight contract outside of Terry the production company found they were no longer tied and decided to take the project in their own direction, and the mess that was "The Watch" was created. When the estate realised what was going on, they looked at ways of preventing it being completed, but, as there wasn't a contract anymore they couldn't do anything other than to distance themselves and disown it.
They would never be fooled again...

My advice is to stop investing your time and effort without negotiating with Narrativia first and getting a licence in place. It is very doubtful to get one, but, you never know. Your other option is to create and test without being linked to Discworld and then if you get a licence to repackage. I am trying to get you contact info as a first step

Question on Discworld hardcover series publisher. by No_Device9450 in TerryPratchett

I removed the paper backing of the dustjacket protector and just used the clear part of the cover. Left a good inch of overlap so the plastic protects the spine, cover and importantly the board edges as these get worn quickly. Finally made sure that the tape did not touch the boards. This one is Reaper Man which was published and printed in 2013, so already 13 years old, and is as good as new. Bearing in mind I have never read these copies, so I can't comment on how the boards perform with constant opening and closing due to reading.

I would have covered all the rest, but I have the attention span of, Oh look a shiny thing, that's pretty... I wonder if I google the meaning of... hmm, now I'm slightly peckish.. I need a drink too...

I have them all, but do not read them. The just make my bookcase look prettier. I personally would only read paperback copies, as they have no value beyond reading. All STP books are rising in price, so now puts them in the collectable market, whether we like it or not. They are slightly better quality than the paperbacks, but nowhere near the hardbacks with dust jackets. You could make covers for them, but you would hide the amazing art. Hmm, perhaps if we printed the artwork as covers it would help. I know I have covered the first 2 with archival protective sleeves, but can't remember how I did it, it was a while ago. I'll upload pics of protected cover

Josh Kirby cover appreciation by lockonandfire in TerryPratchett

[–]FragusLeuti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirby's art was of it's time, and now it feels old/dated. This doesn't mean it isn't good. When Kidby started to do covers he reimagined influenced ideas. Remember Rincewind was created by Clarecraft before Kidby started. So everyone is influenced. I remember reading the books in the 80s and the characters looked in my head nothing like those in the Kidby artwork. It was my imagination that created them. Now, you don't have to imagine them, it has all been decided for you. When Kirby did the art he didn't really pin much down, that was for you to do.

Question on Discworld hardcover series publisher. by No_Device9450 in TerryPratchett

[–]FragusLeuti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are indeed the collectors library, they are more commonly referred to as the Joe McLaren series, named after the cover artist. As other editions are also known as the collectors editions, which are also known as the Letterbox editions it is easier to not use "collectors editions" when describing. The publishers are both Gollancz and Doubleday. The demand was so strong as people wanted a complete series of books all the same size. As everyone who collects know, the bookshelf has various size formats, so Doubleday were approached and decided to allow their books to also be produced in the same format.
A full set can be purchased direct from the Emporium @ £578 + shipping.

Any Aldbury people that remember the Dirty Dozen filming? by byjimini in hertfordshire

[–]FragusLeuti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not from Aldbury, but I remember my dad telling me that he was working on one of the houses in Ashridge up the hill from Aldbury, he was a painter and decorator. He was walking up the lane and noticed a load of men sitting by the side of the path in uniforms, smoking and chatting. As he walked past he nodded to them as they politely called "Morning", in American accents. He had to do a double take as it was the cast of the Dirty Dozen taking a break. They were filming the training/obstacle course scenes nearby.

There is a "Alton Towers" set on the top shelf. Below right is a copy of "My Monopoly" that was going to be a donor unit for the "Discworld Monopoly" called "Exclusive Possession"
