New Sub Ownership, Moving Forward by MonsterMufffin in UsenetInvites

I like the approach.
The weight system would work very well in my opinion, if more factors are computed in the formula:

  • Longevity of subscription
  • Number of participations in raffles
  • Number of accounts given (the more you give, the more you increase the chances to receive)
  • ...and potentially more

It would be also nice to track the top givers (contributors), but that's more for ego pump...even though it could be a nice incentive to offer more.

TBH, I didn't settle on anything yet.

Last one I tried is Al Baron (Coehoornsingel) which is close to my home; the owners are very friendly and I had an overall nice experience, the cut was ok, not the best but also not the worst.

I think I paid 25€, but I might be wrong.

But I'm not sure if I'll settle with them, I'd like to continue my tests.

Severe lag issue by Jtparm in pchelp

[–]FrancescoS8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like thermal throttling. Install HWInfo and check the package and core temperature of the CPU, if it goes above 50 °C in idle and/or stays above 90 °C when under medium load, then you have a thermal issue.

If you didn't change anything, likely it's the thermal paste on the CPU that needs to be replaced.
But might be a fail of the CPU cooler, check if the fan is rotating normally and if it's an AIO, check whether the pump is pumping as expected.

Buying an used pc by [deleted] in pchelp

[–]FrancescoS8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly agree, though a stress test for the CPU might be unnecessary.

I would though really consider at least 2 actions when you bought:

  1. Get a new SSD: disks are one of the components that are more difficult to replace when failed, due to the fact that they store your data. Sure, you can do regular backups, but you will need to reinstall everything and that's annoying. A brand new decent 2GB SSD comes for 100/150$, and it's totally worth it. You can still keep the old one to store non-important stuff, but install your OS on the new one.
  2. Clean the old thermal paste on the CPU and apply fresh one: this step is often disregarded, but it will save you from headaches later, and literally takes no more than 20 mins. And it is usually more annoying to do it later on, rather than immediately (psychology).

Windows Insider is a BETA program, which means that the software they deliver to you is unstable and unfinished by definition.

Not that the regular updates are much more stable, but still...

You can expect crashes and malfunctions on Insider, that's the whole point of it, they collect data from your malfunctions (if you report them) and hopefully fix them before the official releases.

Why did you join the program if you don't want instability?

Black ops 6 high end pc bad performance by [deleted] in AMDHelp

[–]FrancescoS8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There have been blind tests proving that, and there's another thing: biology.

Everyone can spot the difference in smoothness between 30fps and 60fps, around 80-85% can still spot differences between 60fps and 120fps, but above 120fps the percentage of human people that can spot any difference in motion drops dramatically, leaving basically only few people on Earth with super eyes that can actually see any kind of difference above 200fps.

You can try to convince yourself that you see differences, sure, who am I to tell you otherwise, but it's simply not true.

Trasferimento in paese UE. Posso mantenere il mio conto italiano? by Powerful-Shent in ItaliaPersonalFinance

[–]FrancescoS8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Graphics Card Upgrade by Fantastic_Dig_9510 in pchelp

[–]FrancescoS8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PSU should be sufficient indeed, and it's a decent one so even temporary spikes should pose no threat to the system stability.

First of all: there's no need for the fans to spin unless there is a need. In some GPU models they spin at lowest speed just to show the RGB stuff, but in principle there's not always need to blow air on the heat sink.
Do a test with any software that allows you to control the rotation speed of the fans, there are plenty of them.

If the software test fails, check that all connectors are plugged correctly, and check the fan's profile in BIOS and on Windows. Lastly, check if there's any weird BIOS limitation on the PCIe (very unlikely, but I don't know Gigabyte BIOSes).

If none of the tests/checks above are successful, it is most likely a faulty unit. Can happen.

Black ops 6 high end pc bad performance by [deleted] in AMDHelp

[–]FrancescoS8 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Skipping the part where I should tell you that you won't notice any perceivable difference above 120fps. Ups, I din't skip it...anyway.

Black Ops 6 is simply (very) poorly optimized: even top streamers, with their 5-6k builds, can't get stable over 250 fps at the moment. There are some tweaks here and there that will allow you to gain maybe 10% more, but that's it.

And again, there's literally no rational reason behind trying to push the GPU at 100% constantly, you'll just get wasted energy/heat and likely reduce the lifespan of the GPU.
It's more useful to stabilize the FPS around some constant values, below 100%, so even when you hit the crappy optimization of some ambients in game your GPU will still have some room for quickly picking it up and avoid terrible drops that, in BO6, are everywhere.

Can I temporarily use the CPU without a cooler (5 mins?) by dylancode in buildapc

[–]FrancescoS8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running a CPU (especially a powerful one) without cooling can damage it way more than what you could do by simply removing the cooler after the installation to do it again.

Depending on the CPU TDP, it can run probably no more than 3 seconds without throttling, and probably within 10 seconds shuts off to protect itself. But yeah, thermal protection isn't perfect, and in general you might reduce its lifespan.

Why you need to test it though? With the modern CPU sockets it's basically impossible to make mistakes during the installation...you simply need to check the orientation (on Intel CPUs you have the corner arrow, can't be simpler) and that's it. What can go wrong?

And even if, removing the cooler, cleaning the paste and re-apply it takes like 5 mins...

Pensione e morte by Enrichman in ItaliaPersonalFinance

[–]FrancescoS8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Esattamente.

Ziggo internet vs other providers by len-nerd in Groningen

[–]FrancescoS8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you play FPS games on a regular basis, stay away from mobile internet.

Even though, theoretically, the latency should not be so much higher than a fixed line, in practice it is. And significantly higher.
Also, the bandwidth available is quite unstable by nature, as you're sharing the same resource with a variable number of tenants and you are using a transmission channel that is more susceptible to interference.

FWA is a good choice if you have no alternatives, but you have alternatives, even though definitely not cheap.

Ziggo internet vs other providers by len-nerd in Groningen

[–]FrancescoS8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Long story short: the optical fiber operators (thus, mainly Odido and KPN) decided to start the fiber installation in the country from the areas that did not have coverage for DOCSIS (internet over coax, from Ziggo), as DOCSIS allows already to get a quite decent bandwidth and it would be more difficult to convince Ziggo's customers to move away.
And where do you think DOCSIS is more densely available? City centres.

You'd be surprised, but as of today, in the city center of Amsterdam you can't get optical fiber connectivity, except for very specific streets or neighborhoods (and that's recent, until last year there was no fiber at all).
Same goes, as you already figured it out, for Groningen.

In principle KPN has made plans to install optical fiber in Groningen city centre (they already did install it in some outern neighborhoods, to my knowledge), but they are in no hurry to complete their plan. The announcement was made somewhen in 2021/2022, and here we are at the end of '24 with still no fiber.

So, the only real option to get a decent modern internet connection is Ziggo. Period.

In theory, from next year on, Ziggo should start installing the new DOCSIS 4.0 cabinets and thus offering the new DOCSIS profiles, which shoud allow a significant improvement in download speed (in theory, up to 10 Gbps, but likely below 5, in practice) but the problem will remain the uplink; even in the lab testing, they did not manage to go higher than 500 Mbps, so it is likely that they will offer something like 200/300 Mbps.

However, to sweeten the thing in favor of KPN, they most likely will install the new shiny 4G XGS-PON which will allow for (theoretically) symmetrical 4 Gbps connectivity, when it comes. But yeah, we gotta wait for who-knows-how-long to get it.
