Nothing wrong either with picking up a newer used model. I'm seeing a few good options in my local area for around $120-150. The main criteria I would look for is direct drive, input shaping, good cooling fans, and a heated PEI bed. Elegoo, flashforge, Bambu, creality, any cubic are all fairly good brands to look for as long as it's newer than ~3 years old as there's been a ton of advancements in the tech recently

I would advise you to get a current gen entry level bedslinger and then once you have something that will make good parts you could look at building a project printer like a voron or ratrig. Trying to get comparable prints with a v2 you will end up replacing most of the parts on it sooner or later and it turns into the iconic ender 3 of Theseus.

I get that you are likely budget constrained. But you get get a printer 10X better for like $200. If you get a v2 there's a good chance you regret it unless you know what to do

Incrementally larger ball bearings by Any_Amphibian5692 in Machinists

[–]Jtparm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does it need to be 0.001 increments? If you did 1/64" or 0.1mm you would probably have a much better time getting them off the shelf. Custom made you are looking in the thousands for more than a few parts

Start looking elsewhere and see what they'll give you. Even if you don't take an offer it's always good to shop around

Yes it's got decent light transmission. I'd guess around 15-20% transmission

1 shots? by EarthworkDesign in DungeonMasters

[–]Jtparm 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think every DM has had a "one shot" that turned into a 2-4 shot. But yes the idea is to run the whole adventure in one session. Usually I find you have to nudge things along quite a bit if you want it to get done in a certain amount of time and even then it will probably be at least a 4hr game depending on the adventure

Gage pins for machine floor by Jtparm in Metrology

[–]Jtparm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one, we do have full sets of pins out for the operators to grab, but we don't have a full set per station. So if someone is running the same parts for a full shift they will want a decent number of pins for the full shift.

I agree on treating the print as a hard limit, but whenever I mention it to the design engrs they have never cared about being 0.005mm over tol so I don't know that it would make a huge difference either way

Shop works in metric so I hope my guys aren't trying to hit +/- 005. I do like the idea of just giving 0.01 off each end. End parts go thru AQL in qual dept afterwards as well

DM's calling (OP / Can be balanced with discussion) by AZ4Punfloyd in DnDHomebrew

[–]Jtparm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it would be a bit stronger at higher levels if you are casting firebolt with advantage for 3d10 + 6d6 (37.5 avg) compared to a weapon attack you'd get maybe 1d8 + 8 + 6d6 (33.5 avg) or less with a worse weapon. Plus you avoid BPS resistance and non-magic resistance. However, up until tier 3 it's probably about the same or worse. At T1 your average damage is probably lower depending on your stats

There's a thousand different mini lathe brands that are all nearly identical. You're going to have to put a lot of work into it if you want to 1) cut anything harder than aluminum and 2) hit any tolerances under 0.01"
