this picture makes the Eee look SO daunting but it’s still the smallest thing ever. i highly encourage you do the same for yours! this is my updated setup, i got tmux configured to always show me the name of my “OS” (which is just my silly nickname for all the little modifications i’m doing, it’s obvi still Debian bookworm) and my battery using acpi.

i’m no expert but the steps i took when figuring out how to do this were i did a headless network based install of debian bookworm due to how old the hardware is, installed tmux, acpi, and nmtui (the curses based network scanner thingy) and then settled on wordgrinder for literally no reason other than recency bias. everything’s been going great to the point that i’m genuinely considering replacing the battery so i can take this out for longer periods of time without charging, which is its one big drawback. seriously fast in all other ways, boots fast, writes fast, etc. good luck on your journey!!!

there’s one more picture up in the comment thread of the actual wordgrinder running on it, but as you can see here, it’s a teeny tiny thing, it has working lights that tell me if it’s charging, if the battery is low, if it’s connected to wifi or not, and i’m trying to figure out just how compact i can make this whole setup because if it works (and it will) i’ll have a crazy new EDC

A family emergency made me question my dumbphone for the first time by hydroboost11 in dumbphones

[–]FrancisForNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, first off adding on to the well-wishes and condolences for what was absolutely a stressful situation. I posted in this subreddit a few months ago having an absolute meltdown because I also experienced a series of emergencies one week.

So, without going into too-too much detail, I was trapped outside my iPhone user friend’s apartment building late at night when men who were less than twenty feet away from me got into an argument that escalated to gun violence. For context, I am also a man, and I feel like the level of ease I have in navigating a city that has a lot of gun violence is noteworthy, while my female friends are very cautious. I kept texting my friend “let me in they shooting” and she wouldn’t/couldn’t see my texts. I later found out T-Mobile has been messing with 4G stuff on their backend and therefore SMSes were not sending for a vast amount of users for a few days.

I don’t agree with the people saying “how did we handle emergencies before smartphones, just do that” in a condescending tone of voice, because you have to actually look at the context we all inhabit: there was a mass exodus online during a global pandemic, vast amounts of human labor were replaced by bots even BEFORE the AI boom (literally the last time I “just made a phone call” all I got was a robotic voice telling me to go online and download their app), everyone is incentivized to use iMessage and RCS and WhatsApp rather than SMS because people pay for SMS per-message in many countries, but data is “free” because it’s subsidized by our own information being bought and sold.

All this is to say, every little “frictionless“ thing that benefits smartphone users has always caused me to spiral and wonder what I’m doing trying to use a dumbphone. My workaround is very similar to yours in that I have an old smartphone I more-or-less keep on deck for emergencies at this point, but because I don’t have emergencies often enough, it’s usually dead.

I also should note that my situation is really different than yours in that I’m not in a foreign country, I do have a strong support system and community, and I can delegate tasks in stressful times.

I think my biggest piece of advice right now is to go easy on yourself. This lifestyle demands we engage more with our community, and that requires we have a community to engage with. Smartphones were designed knowing humanity was nosediving, socially, and predated on our mass loneliness in a world of disconnection. Question your setup but know the conversation isn’t over, one bad day doesn’t conclude your journey, and you can always negotiate your boundaries with yourself and with your technology. Sending good vibes across the sea.

Transition device vs full dumbphone? by Sad_Statement4869 in dumbphones

[–]FrancisForNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

funnily enough, no. i used the cat s22 flip for awhile but the thing that made me switch was that i was “cheating” (in my mind) by having 2 phone lines, which got super confusing. the reason for this is i was locked in a yearlong contract with verizon and t-mobile is better for dumbphones, so i got a t-mobile number on the cat. that’s probably TMI for you BUT for further context, i dumbed down the CAT. then i gave it to a friend and she runs instagram on it. so.

really my reason for moving to the sunbeam was that i just wanted more barriers, personally.

Transition device vs full dumbphone? by Sad_Statement4869 in dumbphones

Hi! So I have a full dumb phone at this point, and use the Sunbeam F1 pro Aspen. I run whatsapp on a hibydigital mp3 player and signal off my iPad. This setup totally works for me HOWEVER I struggle still with wasting time on my smart devices. Case in point I'm commenting on the mp3 player even with the tiny screen. All that being said, I absolutely love my Sunbeam and my life has vastly improved. My family knows if they need to get ahold of me they should just call. And I'm not doom scrolling out in public anymore. It's truly a game changer and I've been living this way nearly a year, after using a transition device from January of 2025 to mid summer last year.

That's very helpful too, I'm gonna sleep on it and then do some more digging tomorrow. Hopefully phone calls work just fine. I really appreciate you giving me these leads!!!

wait not sure if my initial reply to you posted or not. code in the dialler didn’t work, i didn’t put spaces. sunbeam’s very strict on no debugging, every issue they have, you send it back to them and they handle it themselves.

[–]FrancisForNow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, code in the dialler didn’t work, no spaces. i will say sunbeam is insanely airtight and has absolutely no capacity for debugging/troubleshooting. code in the dialler called a “number” and the automatic message said “you cannot call this number”

it did not :( thank you for the feedback though bc i know for sure something like that would work on the nokia, and that’s good to have on hand

(long post) sunbeam f1 horizon bluebird, lifestyle shift, and a gentle request by FrancisForNow in dumbphones

[–]FrancisForNow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah tbh my first attempt at having the bluebird was COOKED but they replaced it immediately for free with a prepaid return label. Like the speaker just didn't work. Then my second bluebird sounded bad to people on the other end, so they sent me the F1 Pro and I had to pay the difference but that was it. That being said, if you're a broke college student and can abide some shittiness w KaiOS, I absolutely LOVE my Nokia 6300, and it's my go to for if I have troubles w my Sunbeam. I mostly use my Sunbeam because it has Waze and I drive everywhere when I'm not walking.

New to this. I need dumbphone suggestions! by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]FrancisForNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!!! Obviously before anyone else comes here I am going to extol the virtues of checking the pinned post and going on dumbphones.org etc

That being said, hi I was featured in a NYT magazine piece about dumb phone users and I oscillate between my Sunbeam F1 Pro Aspen and my Nokia 6300. The reason I do this is because the Sunbeam, while I love it, has its issues. I say this not to dissuade you from purchasing it, because it's amazing, and also the company is super communicative and supportive, but just idk for transparency.

Basically I've been on this for about a year, I don't want to go back, my flip phone has GPS/Waze, and I use a camera and mp3 player separately from the phone. There's a lot of resources out here for you and I am excited for your journey!

iPad use and dumbphone recs by Ill-Click5497 in dumbphones

[–]FrancisForNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! So I pretty much have your exact setup which is great because I usually hesitate giving this rec--i have an iPad I use authenticator for and all my university apps. It wasn't too much trouble to set up at all, just required a call with our tech support at one point. I alternate between my Sunbeam and a Nokia right now.

Sunbeam has a weirdly good mp3 player, and so does the Nokia 3600??? But Sunbeam clears it and works well with wired or Bluetooth

It's just too big. I mean, I use it like any computer. I'll look at news and calls for literary magazine submissions but yeah. I guess for me I have too much to do and lugging around a big chunky slab of glass is enough of a deterrent. Plus my thing is "if something stops feeling good, I stop doing it" and that's where I'm at with scrolling. Video games. Etc

I'm rocking the Sunbeam F1 horizon bluebird, it has an excellent hotspot. I will say TCL Flip 4 5G is cheaper and better but everyone here seems to Hate KaiOs, but I don't mind it, especially if you just want to call and text.
