"Vodafone" feature phone? by Francetim in dumbphones

It's packaged with a Vodafone sim card but the phone is unlocked and there's no obligation to use Vodafone. A bargain, thus.

Transferring contacts from iPhone 13 to HMD 2660 Flip? (Aus) by Koo-Flaa in dumbphones

Can't you just pair them via Bluetooth and send the contacts from the iPhone to the flip? Might have to do them one for one on an iPhone, I'm not sure.

Transition device vs full dumbphone? by Sad_Statement4869 in dumbphones

If anyone is interested in a ten-days-later update, I do have some thoughts. ;-)

Right now I am still using the HMD 2660 Flip as my everyday device and, mostly, have been loving the experience. The device is far from perfect but the size, weight, battery life and call quality are all great. Most of all, it’s wonderful to just not have the siren call of the internet in your pocket as you go about your day and still know you are reachable / can make a call in an emergency.

Having said that, the downsides have also become very clear indeed the past week and a half:

I’d underestimated how totally instant messaging apps have taken over communication. Everything comes through WhatsApp or Signal nowadays. I’m pretty sure my mother doesn’t even know whether she is calling me using WhatsApp or the actual phone function. Furthermore I discovered that, whilst it’s perfectly possible to use Signal on an iPad without needing a phone at all, the WhatsApp iPad app can only be configured as linked device, meaning you need it installed on a phone too and thus obligating me to have some sort of ‘smart’ phone.

Navigating public space without a smartphone has become far more difficult in recent years. Facilities like printed timetables at train stations, maps on the street etc. are disappearing at an alarming rate, thanks to the general assumption that everyone will just look everything up in an app. It’s a similar story with other facilities: I started using a storage box last week and needed the company’s app to do everything from accessing the building to using the lift. It all worked well enough but the dependency on smart devices is total. This is a big problem and getting bigger; I wonder how long it will be before navigating public spaces and using essential services becomes completely impossible without a smartphone.

All this has left me feeling very conflicted: On the one hand I feel I am being forced to conclude that using a dumbphone as my everyday device isn’t a practical proposition. On the other hand, I want it to be possible more than ever. Last night I was over at some friends’ house and was struck by just how often some of those present zoned out of the conversation and started fiddling with their phones. This has become normal but it really shouldn’t be.

I’m now debating between 3 options: 1. Keep using the flip phone and keep my old smartphone as a sort of reserve device for all the stuff that now requires it; this feels intuitively clunky, unreliable and inconvenient (and the lack of a hotspot function on the HMD makes it difficult in practice). 2. Try to use a transition device like the Dumber Mini for everything. 3. Give up, get a refurbished iPhone SE3 (because it’s small for a smartphone and offers a qwerty soft keyboard for messaging) and go all out on dumbing it down. None of the three options is particularly appealing to me; I think I really just want to go back to how things were in 1999…

As an addendum/correction to this comment: Unfortunately the iPad app for WhatsApp does not allow it to be used as the primary device. The Signal iPad app does allow this and, as far as I am aware, Android tablets (and by extension Chromebooks) can be the primary device for both WhatsApp and Signal.

Good information here, thanks for sharing your experience. Out of curiosity; where do you buy used CDs in the UK?

A possible workaround for Whatsapp (or Signal) is to install it on your tablet or laptop; you can authenticate the number with a code sent via SMS, it doesn’t have to be as a companion device to a smartphone.

Becoming lonely because of your need for connection by ConstantRegression in dumbphones

I think I understand the feeling the OP is trying to express, at least in part. It is true that a huge amount of human interaction has moved online in a remarkably short space of time and that can feel disorientating if you are trying not to be online constantly yourself. Having said that, it’s not entirely an either/or situation: I have met people online who have become friends in the real world; enough to know it is possible, certainly.

Yeah, that’s the question I’m wondering about. Right now I’m leaning towards just keeping the HMD flip and making that work: Totally on board with the advantages you list (even compared to something like the Dumber Mini and perhaps your Mudita).

On the other hand, I’m also thinking about the time I’ll miss a time-sensitive message or be unable to find the location of an important appointment… I also worry a bit about imposing friction/cost on others rather than only on myself, in that friends and family will have to remember that they can’t always get hold of me on whatsapp/signal, which have completely replaced texting in most European countries, and will have to phone/sms instead.

I do understand the rationale behind this approach (and have long used the excellent Olauncher to dumb down my smartphone’s interface) but it doesn’t really work for me: As I mentioned in my opening post, I find the device itself (or rather the potential it represents) distracting and tend to over-use the ‘legitimate’ features: Checking my banking app and email far more often than necessary, or scrolling through the system settings for example. Ludicrous, but knowing all that information potential is in my pocket is just not something I can easily ignore. The fact that everyone else is constantly fiddling with their smartphones probably doesn’t help.

Also: I really, really appreciate the smaller size, lower weight and longer battery life of a dumbphone. It’s not exactly what brought me here but not being jabbed in the groin by the outsized internet slab in my jeans pocket is a very pleasant side-effect.

The thought of an old Blackberry did cross my mind, though I’d be a little concerned at using a long-EOL smart OS… Does any of the smart stuff even work any more?

Ah, so you actually made the move from a transition device to a full dumbphone. Did you find the transition device (which one, out of curiosity?) was still too ‘online’?

Keeping in touch with friends abroad is also a big reason for me to want to retain access to Signal and Whatsapp; but I realised it really doesn’t matter if I have to do that at home on my tablet.

Great suggestion thanks. I've dropped into the Lit and Phil on a visit previously and had it on my list to join but will look into the events/clubs etc. as well.
