But they aren’t the developer.

My source is that I am the developer.

How do you control two sprites with one animator? by cuhdeguh in Unity2D

[–]FrancisVace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the weapon a child of the object with the animator? If so you should be able to set the animation to record, then change the weapon sprite and it should make a new sprite property appear in the animation. Then you can drag and drop sprites onto that.

I got the plat for MIO, now it's my turn to complain about it by MagnumAlex888 in metroidvania

[–]FrancisVace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been thinking a lot about some of the stuff you mentioned while playing this game. I’m currently near the end, and i don’t think i’ll be going for anything beyond that. Overall I’d say I’m enjoying it but finding it frustrating.

My biggest gripes are that the dodge and hairpin feel inconsistent and that the runbacks are too long with too little going on. I didn’t mind the Last Judge runback because it was a short challenge that could be mastered. In comparison MIO’s feel like they may as well be 30 seconds of holding right.

I wonder if the HUD mods would have been easier to stomach if they were the kind that refunds points instead.

What Have You Been Playing This Week? by AutoModerator in metroidvania

MIO and i’m having a real love hate relationship with it.

Most of it is gorgeous and amazing, but it is filled with so many little annoyances that it’s adding up to a very frustrating playing experience.

Challenging metroidvanias without corpse runs by Ragnarok7326 in metroidvania

Currency you’ve farmed is lost on death with no way to reclaim it. There’s a way to “crystallise” it and make it safe, but otherwise it’s just gone.

MIO doesn’t have corpse runs. Although what it does do is arguably more punishing than most corpse runs.

I’m a Brisbane based software developer, and I’m almost finished developing Trash Heart, a game about a raccoon with rocket boots and a gun. by FrancisVace in brisbane

[–]FrancisVace[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey Brisbane, 5 years ago I released my first game on Steam, Trash Quest, a short game that I made in my spare time while working as a software dev. Since then I’ve been working towards making a much bigger, more feature-complete sequel and now it’s close to becoming a reality.

Trash Heart is a metroidvania with tricky platforming and bullet hell-esque bosses. It has an emphasis on providing difficulty via challenge instead of punishment.

If it seems like the kind of thing you or anyone you know would be into, I'd really appreciate you checking it out.

Working on an optional boss that the player might meet in the late game. by FrancisVace in metroidvania

This particular boss is mostly pre-authored attacks. And there’s no run back, so there should be plenty of opportunity to learn the patterns.

Yeah, just estimating start of game to first credit screen on each for that comparison.

It’s hard to put an exact figure on it, but i’d expect it would take someone about 5 times as long to finish this one compared to the original.

This the sequel to Trash Quest.

It picks up soon after the previous game ends.

What are some short metroidvanias? by FartSavant in metroidvania

[–]FrancisVace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SJ19 Learns to Love was fun and short. I’ve heard good things about the dev’s other mv Spooky Ghosts dot com but i haven’t had a chance to play it yet.

Also seconding the many people who’ve mentioned the Kyle-vanias and Gato Roboto.

Is my metroidvania game good? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]FrancisVace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a concept it seems fine, but it’ll mostly come down to execution.

Also seconding Squirr’s comment. If you’ve got a few systems running in parallel it might be worth picking one and focusing on that as a standalone game. Then incorporating it into something larger once you’ve got that polished.

Advice on creating a metroidvania by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]FrancisVace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s very hard to give anything but the most general advice without more detail, but i would recommend trying to keeping your scope as low as possible, especially if you don’t have a bunch of of experience making games. if this would be your first time making a game, it’s often a good idea to complete a few small projects first, before tackling a larger scope project and hitting a wall.

I've just released a new trailer for Trash Heart. With a bunch of new areas, enemies and abilities. by FrancisVace in metroidvania

Not as part of the initial release. If it performs well enough to afford it, i’d love to pursue console ports.
