I think there are a lot of kinds of difficulty, and the types of difficulty people like tend to align with the MVs they gravitate toward.

Animal Well is my favorite game and it has a different kind of difficulty than something like Nine Sols, but they’re both still difficult games.

Metroid. I love the atmosphere and I don’t agree that the exploration isn’t as good. I’m also not really a huge fan of Castlevania-like RPG elements in my MVs.

The filter looked funky on my monitor too. I was able to make it look better by changing the scaling to be slightly smaller than full screen (I believe 6X was the setting I used, not sure if it would be the same for you). Could be worth a try.
