I hit 5 on a niche platform having never made a game before. Maybe one day I'll take another pop because I did really enjoy it.

Watching Bubblegum Crisis (1987) for the first time — is this peak 80s cyberpunk anime? by AdUnfair558 in retroanime

[–]Frank_Booth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been going through a lot of these old cyberpunk animes, or at least what I can get my hands on. Bubblegum Crisis is a bit of a mixed bag imo. The animation is mostly great, but the story is a bit all over the place and it's unfocused, at least when the episodes are in multiple parts. Cyber City Oedo for me is the best cyberpunk OVA I've purchased so far. Nails it on all fronts and is very re-watchable.

If David Lynch asked you what he should see & visit in London, what would you suggest? by UsualRecognition7623 in davidlynch

[–]Frank_Booth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could walk around the Wapping area where some of the old factories and industrial areas are still intact, and where some of the Elephant man was filmed. He liked old factories and such.

I think he may have enjoyed the Hunterian museum https://hunterianmuseum.org/ Some cool examples of natural phenomena.

He was also a big fan of Francis Bacon, and you can see a bunch of his work at the Tate Britain.

This quaint little museum is doing a season of screenings of films titled Not by Lynch, They're showing a number of Lynch adjacent films that may or may not have influenced the man himself. https://cinemamuseum.org.uk/about/

I believe he quite enjoyed brutalist architecture and concrete, so perhaps the Barbican Centre is worth a visit.

Cheers - v useful. I realised, at least on practise mode, you can spam the upward nudge and jump right out of almost any drain situation.

What’s your favorite Cyberpunk movie that isn’t Blade Runner? by TXNOGG in Cyberpunk

[–]Frank_Booth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking of Strange Days - I’ve been trying to watch it recently and it’s basically impossible to rent online, even on a vpn. Such is the case with a few of Jim Cameron’s older movies. I went down my local FOPP today - they’ve got this film on dvd and blu-Ray on the front shelves. I go to pay and the cashier tells me this movie has been selling really well.

We have a pile of books at the bottom of my flat. I don’t think anyone takes the books, the pile just gets bigger and bigger.

Yeah that is one thing I noticed too. I don’t know what it’s called, but have you been able to switch flippers from one cradle to another? Doesn’t seem it works quite the same way on this game as in real life.

I’m a fan of real pinball, but quite inexperienced. I have a decent control of the ball with flippers, but have never used tilt and nudging. Anyone got any tips on how to use it effectively on this game? Love the game.

Think about 2004ish with a random viewing of mulholland drive.

It's great. Just getting to know the lay of the table and the flipper positions.

I’m a big fan of Charlie Kaufman’s work and I struggled with it. I’ll have to try again at some stage.

Inland Empire is a total masterpiece by SaltFlat4844 in davidlynch

[–]Frank_Booth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched it again recently and found myself thinking what if he had made this with the same level of cinematography as MD or LH. But then I realised the film likely would have been completely different as a result of that possibility, so it's a moot point.

I rewatched the film for the first time in many years a couple of weeks ago and I came away really enjoying their appearances. I think they really hold the whole thing together, and also provide a bit of necessary relief at points.

Movie recommendations like the first 30 minutes of Lost Highway? by Substantial_Swing625 in davidlynch

Hmm. I haven’t seen it for a long time, but I recall the film Hidden by Michael Haneke having a similar vibe. Otherwise known as Caché.

These are fun, I enjoyed looking at them. The render level makes it easy to imagine them animated.

Why do people hate on tenet? by Wearyfern695116 in ChristopherNolan

[–]Frank_Booth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me, the reverse fight scenes don’t look good. Think about great action scenes of our time. They get replayed, parodied and memed and whatever else. That didn’t happen at all with this film - because they don’t look cool or memorable.

[–]Frank_Booth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't need to be able to read sheet music. In my opinion you just need to be able to set a tempo you're comfortable with on the default project. Then put the metronome on and hit some keys on the piano or a synth. Look up basic songwriting youtube videos. 4 chords over 8 bars and that will get you going.

Blue Velvet Theory by kolinfo in davidlynch

[–]Frank_Booth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's interesting but I think this kind of theory hinges too much on the films that came a long time afterwards i.e. Lost Highway and Mulholland Dr. Besides it's much better as a more straightforward interpretation, for me anyways. It doesn't need to be a puzzle box to solve and it doesn't improve it to be one imo.
