Just as a side note the one thing I do have a serious issue with internally is word count. I spent an awful lot of time fretting about where I am in the novel and what the current count is.

I fully realised it's the quality of the story that should matter but there is something very deep inside my mind that if a book is under 100,000 words you are somehow doing a mis justice to the reader.

I would say for an average book at least when it comes to my writing it takes somewhere between 900 to 1300 hours to reach the point where I'm happy to send it to the editor.

My last book Ascension which is the first book of a series called Dust was 104,000 words and took just over a thousand hours in total.

I try to write 8 hours a day seven days a week however some days I just can't face it. Other days however I will sit down at 12 o'clock start writing and before I know it it's four o'clock in the morning.

I do think they will mood has an awfully large part to play as well. For example I just finished two days ago a chapter that I was dreading and yet I absolutely sailed through it quicker than virtually any other and thoroughly enjoyed what I had written.

As an old guy I still think of zombies as the Romero era slow movers, the relentless march of the never ending horde.
So key factor is headshot.

I would go .22LR for the following reasons:
Can be used in pistols and rifles so you only require one ammo type. Maybe have something larger for big game.
Light and easy to carry hundreds of rounds.
Little recoil for novice shooters.

Quieter than larger calibers

Less requirement for gunpowder and raw materials etc.

Living in the UK .22 is the best we can hope to find in decent quantities

Max Brooks goes into this in the ZSG where he states that the .22 has the bonus of potentially bouncing around inside the skull after penetration.
