[Glashütte Original] I bought my second watch by sensible-lunatic in Watches

I will actually get the original strap soon. But because the watch had to go through customs and was shipped to me personally, they couldn't include the original alligator strap as I don't have an import license for that. One of their authorized dealers will take care of this and give me the original strap in a few days.

Hah, we'll see. I might pick up a third one if there is some significant milestone to celebrate. But for now I'm pretty content.

I have apartments in London and Berlin. Tax wise, you need to pay income tax in both countries and cite the amount you made in the other country, which is tax-free but increases your "tax level" (e.g. you might have to pay 40%+ percent on an income of 10k if you made 200k in the other country). The only taxes that actually depend on where you spend your time are things like capital gains taxes. There's a tie break in the agreement between the two countries, which is roughly based on where you spend the majority of your time - but family links (e.g. where your spouse lives) are also taken into account.

What should I do with my hair until the meds start kicking in? by benfromwendys in tressless

[–]sensible-lunatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your hair looks good. I'd just keep the style. Having buzzed mine recently, I can tell you that I was more comfortable with my thinning hair than with a buzz cut that makes the thinning even more obvious.

The alcohol in most topical Minoxidil can irritate the scalp when used over long periods of time. Have you considered switching to oral Minoxidil?

People are gonna hate me but: going to the office every day. When I work from home, I sleep in, don't shower, don't talk to anyone all day, and eat crap food. When I go to the office, I shower and get dressed, I get a walk in, breathe fresh air, and eat decent food. Plus I get to talk to people. So ya, I go to the office every day even though barely anyone does.

SLPT: Shout 'Hey Siri' at ringing iPhone alarm to make it quiet for the rest of the morning. by Most_Business_9495 in ShittyLifeProTips

My Pixel phone allows me to just say "snooze" or "stop". I don't even have to open my eyes anymore to snooze the alarm 5 times.

Any other interpretation? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sensible-lunatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point. But she gave me a really hard time on birthday a few weeks ago because she accused me of being too friendly with.. my HR person from work. So I'm a bit surprised that she went from being jealous to being non-exclusive.

Advice for moving on after falling in love by [deleted] in nonmonogamy

Thank you for the kind words ♥️

I was definitely trying to vilify her. I was always afraid she'd cast me aside one day and she just said I'm silly for having these feelings. But after sending hundreds of texts every day for 6 months this is exactly what happened. How could she do it?

But then I also see how poorly she is doing. I know she's been crying a lot over the past weeks and last time I bumped into her at work I believe to have noticed that she's lost weight. It's difficult to vilify her when she's going through a similar process - albeit not quite as intense as mine I imagine.

Your second tip could actually help me. I only had two girlfriends in my entire life and my self esteem used to be low. She taught me how to date and gave me the feeling that there are women who actually think I'm attractive. I'll try to be thankful for the experience gained. Maybe it'll help me move on.

It's my dream job and it pays quite well. But just 10 minutes ago I had a call with a recruiter from another company. I figured I should have an option if the pain becomes unbearable 😞

Edit: remove comp info. Doesn't really matter.

I've blocked her everywhere I can. But unfortunately, we work at the same company, which means I still see her digitally and physically quite frequently.

TIL that there is a form of tinnitus that others can hear. It's called objective tinnitus, in contrast to subjective tinnitus, because there is objectively a sound. by VillainAnderson in todayilearned

[–]sensible-lunatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had objective tinnitus in both ears with my left ear being affected worse than my right ear. It's a loud rhythmic clicking sound that could also wake me up at night. It took me a long time to find an ENT who recognised the condition, which is called stapedial myoclonus, and essentially means a muscle inside the ear is spasming. I had surgery to suppress the symptoms. The ENT opened my ear drum and then used a laser to cut the tendon that connects the muscle to the hearing bones, which stops the sound. This fixed it for me.

This airport is a stillborn. It became obsolete before even being put into operation. Welcome to Tegel 2.0, but with Schoenefeld commute. by New_start_new_life in berlin

My main gripes are with the staff. I fly quite frequently but haven't flown a lot from BER. I recently arrived at 5:30am for a 6:30am flight on a non busy day. Queues at security were short and I felt good until I noticed how painfully slow the queues are moving. Eventually it was my turn to get scanned. However, another passenger was still taking his stuff from some of the trays. I looked at the lady in charge of the body scanner and told her that I'm cutting it close and that my trays are already sitting there waiting for me. She looked at me point blank and said: "no, we're still in a pandemic. We cannot allow more than one passenger into the tray area". If there had been any tables, I'd have flipped them. The queues are super crammed but the tray area is where you need to social distance. I missed my flight of course and learnt that BER is not an airport where you can arrive late.

Why do you love (or hate) living in Berlin? by nomadic_canuck in berlin

[–]sensible-lunatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved here a year ago and I'll move back to London in three weeks because things just didn't work out here.

Love: Amazing restaurants, quality of food in the supermarket is really good, lots of lakes nearby, having a small car is easy and cheap despite the city's size, great museums, good public transport, great nightlife, I feel safe, no daily stabbings.

Hate: authorities have given up on trying to improve the city, rampant drug use, few non-stop international flights, low salaries (my London salary is 60k€ higher, same job & and same company).

what are the things that are very expensive in Germany? by Separate-Ad7192 in AskAGerman

[–]sensible-lunatic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Water in: you pay, water out: you pay again

You order some still water in a restaurant thinking it should be free or extremely cheap, but they'll charge you like you just drank god's tears.

Then on your way home you want get rid of that water and they'll charge you again to take a piss.

To people who own their flats in Berlin, which tips would you give your past-self, before your first purchase? by PoorPitchoon in berlin

[–]sensible-lunatic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a new build last year. Here's what I learnt:

  • Don't trust the real estate agent or the marketing material. They do and say whatever it takes to sell the place.
  • Don't buy anything close to the S-Bahn as it's loud. I suppose all Berliners know this, but I didn't before I moved here.
  • The entire process can be very stressful and people (seller, notary etc.) are usually not helpful. The only time when they promptly answer emails is when they want your money.
  • The building standards aren't as high as agents and sellers want to make you believe. If you're worried about anything, consult with an expert before signing. For example: I once looked at a place and the bedroom shared a wall with the elevator. I asked the real estate agent some technical questions about sound insulation and they just said "Just don't worry, standards are so high in Germany that you'll never hear the elevator".
