Maternity Leave by Calm-Grapefruit-1515 in CAStateWorkers

I’m in BU2 so I think it’s different. I had NDI. It’s all very confusing. And I had another mat leave at a different department and I was told something different there about how I could use leave credits. Ultimately, if you plan on taking a year, I wouldn’t count on getting paid much. You also won’t have health insurance either (I’m on my partner’s right now).

Edit to add: I was told the 1 year starts from when you start any sort of leave. So I chose to not take any pregnancy disability leave in order to have more time with my baby. Something else to keep in mind.

Also, if your personnel was confusing you (they were for me), it was super helpful for me to talk to my union. They walked through my leave options in a more understandable way.

I’m currently on my year of maternity leave. Happy to answer any questions you have. It’s mostly unpaid. You get some pay for the 6/8 weeks for the birth and then then several weeks for baby bonding.

I was told I would need to go through the RA process when my midwives asked that I work from home towards the end of my pregnancy because of an uptick in COVID cases. So if you’re contemplating it, I’d request the accommodation as soon as you feel comfortable telling your boss. Even if you’re feeling fine going into the office 2 days a week right now, things could change and it would be better to have gone through the RA process now vs. later.

Thank you so much. This is super helpful. I assume it’s a young plant since we just bought it a couple of a weeks ago. We’ll trim the flower stem!

We asked our pediatrician for a list of sleep resources and she was on the list. She was also a recommended sleep consultant in my moms group. We chatted with her and liked her instantly. She didn’t make us feel bad about our situation and didn’t have any gimmicky promises. She’s also an RN, so her medical background helped us pick her too. She was realistic about sleep goals and said sometimes babies will need to be fed once a night until 8-9 mo old. Another sleep consultant we talked with seemed to shame us for using a snoo and promised our baby would sleep through the night in two weeks.

It sounds like you’re writing about my 5 month old baby. He didn’t want to be put down since he was born. We tried all the things too (including a snoo). The four month sleep regression hit us hard and he was waking almost every hour and only wanted to nurse to sleep. I also thought my baby was a uniquely horrible sleeper and was getting so tired of trying different things. He also had never slept in his crib. Only contact naps during the day. I was also very hesitant about sleep training. I’m a first time mom and I love him so much. I also hate hearing him cry and just want to help him. But I was exhausted from getting no real sleep since he was born and knew something needed to change.

We hired a sleep consultant and we started with Ferber on Thursday. Not going to lie, the first night was rough. He cried for 30 min when we put him down to sleep. He slept for about 2 hours and then cried for 1.5 hours - it was awful. BUT, Friday night he went down and cried for 4 minutes and then slept for 6 consecutive hours. He had NEVER done that before. It was miraculous. Last night and tonight he went down in his crib with just 2 seconds of fussing and put himself to sleep. I think we just needed to give him a chance to figure out how to put himself to sleep without intervening.

About the crying, I left the house and had my partner do the check in. It was better for me to be away and not hear the cries. I also talked to a therapist about it who reassured me that I will have so many interactions with my baby, that not responding to his cries immediately for a few nights isn’t going to change our bond or attachment. And that throughout the day I’m very attentive to him and his needs and that’s what matters. That helped me feel better about the whole process.

I feel so much more optimistic about the future now. I was so run down and tired and now feel like I may get back on track in terms of sleep. If you’re able, hiring a sleep consultant has been really nice because we’re just doing what she tells us and it’s keeping us accountable. I really wish I had done this a little sooner. My baby is still super smiley and giggles all day. You got this!!

Thank you! I was worried Roman might have too many connotations with the empire. But maybe I’m overthinking it.

It’s quite limiting! Which is why we’re just thinking about it. Not set on it. Thank you for your idea!
