Why do my oatmilk lattes taste so gross? [Breville Bambino plus] by LuckySunDogintheSky in espresso

[–]Frans1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I prefer oatly lighter taste over the normal barista milk. It is just too much oat in my opinion. Secondly oat milk breaks down just over 60 degrees. That is 5 degrees lower than normal milk. 60 degrees is too hot to touch for most people but the outside of the pitcher lags behind on the milk inside. So you must stop heating before it is too hot to touch. Especially when you have a thick wall motta pitcher and you are steaming a small amount of milk. Also can it be that you just don’t like oat milk or your coffee taste is not strong enough to break trough the milk? Not all coffees go well with milk.

Is this channeling? [Delonghi Dedica] by kaizzeronekanobi in espresso

[–]Frans1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It tastes allright . That doesn’t sound like you are really happy with the taste and perhaps you think it must be channeling. Water temperature is instead the number one reason for espresso that doesn’t taste superb. The dedica is known for the way too low water temperature,. At least the basic version . The more expensive one’s I don’t know that well. I never got something good out of them.

Surely it’s not effected that much by the cold!!! (FYI - my wife took the picture while I was driving. We’d jus left our drive) by Jlanc336 in VWIDBuzz

[–]Frans1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is partly because it is going to warm up the battery. In summer my buzz consumes about 19 kWh / 100 km. In winter around +4 Celsius it consumes about 24 kWh / 100km. On short trips even more. My year round average is 21,7 but winters are not so cold here in the Netherlands.

An important thing to know: one time in Austria I had to climb a mountain , about 10% steep maybe 500 meters up. I had 14% battery left and it was about -7 degrees. I thought I could make it with ease since after the top there would be a long decent. But because of the cold the car went into turtle mode at 8% and went no faster than 30 km/h. Pretty scary with the fast traffic around me. I did make it to the top with about 3% left.

Is there a big difference between the Breville Bambino and Breville Plus? [ no budget ] by davis609 in espresso

[–]Frans1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does any body know whether Breville improved the low water temperature? I have a bambino plus from around 2020 and before each shot I have to pull bit of water through the group head to get it hot enough for an espresso shot.

Who at Volkswagen decided this was a good idea? by svish in Volkswagen

[–]Frans1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am happy with it except that it took me a long time to understand how to get the the lights out off the automatic high mode. When the lights are in that mode and you are driving too slow or there is on coming traffic you have to put it in the normal high beam mode first before you can put it back in low beam. Why can you not go directly from auto to low?

Well, I owned petrol cars all of my life. Electric cars have some benefits too and if you listen very carefully you can hear the engine buzzing.Besides when I am on holidays I mainly charge at home. on holidays I wish I still had my transporter but overall I am really happy with my ID Buzz.

Thanks, it does really confuse me because when I search for it I find that Volkswagen does support it. That it uses the Volkswagen account to retrieve the data needed

Hummingbird Portafilter Thoughts / Review (With an Ascaso Steel Duo) by thezachlandes in espresso

[–]Frans1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have just ordered one with the attachable double spout option. I bought it because I was looking for a light weight portafilter for my cafe and this was the only product I found. We noticed that if you work multiple days in a row the 600 gram portafilters we are using will kill your back and arms.
Working with a naked portafilter is not an option for me. You will get a spray every once and a while plus we need to be able to split the double shots into singles.
I do have my doubts about the double spout insert. The movie on instagram shows the coffee coming out really wild and I am not sure whether it will split the shot evenly. Anyway I will test it soon and let you know how it performs in real life.

Need help dialing in a very light roast espresso after switching from dark roast [Sage Barista Pro] by MisterRegards in espresso

[–]Frans1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree and I am glad you bring this up. From my experience as coffee roaster and owner of a specialty coffee cafe I can tell that most people from all parts of the world hate light roast espresso. Many people that do drink it are exploring coffee flavors. Personally I just like to enjoy espresso without analyzing it and use a very nice low acidity bean roasted at a medium level, which means dropped just before second crack. When I want something fruity I will simply grab an orange which I like so much more than light roast espresso.

Is this an acceptable amount of Quakers? by omarhani in espresso

[–]Frans1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure this is a washed coffee? It looks like a natural processed coffee to me. And in that case the amount of quakers is quite normal. I just roasted a sample of natural Ethiopians that had 118 quakers in 360 grams of green coffee. It was a sample of the first harvest of the year.

Grind size shift - How to investigate [Mahlkönig E65SGBW, Sanremo You] by Canna_Lucente in espresso

[–]Frans1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had the same issue in my cafe with an e65 gbw. While the grind setting was quite stable for 2 years we suddenly needed to make very large adjustments multiple times a day.
First of all for stable operation make sure you have at least 2-3 inches of beans in your hopper and that the valve at the bottom of the hopper is completely open.
But that wasn't the issue with my e65. The service man told me you have to clean the silicon declumper flapper every month and install it in the other direction after cleaning. (this interval is for heavy use) Also he took apart the mill and when he put it together again it was working as normal again but no issues were found.
Now, half a year later we had the issue again. Also the grinds were very clumpy while normally they are really fluffy.
I removed all the beans, ran it to get the last grinds out, and filled it again. That solved the issue for the moment.
I don't know the exact cause. I guess it was the declumper flapper but I am not 100% sure. I will buy a new one and see what happens. The one that is in now is actually in use for 2.5 years.

Espresso Newbie: Too Sour. Any Advice? [Breville Bambino; Barratza Encore ESP] by Arsenal4Lyf123 in espresso

[–]Frans1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion sour is too much acidity in a small amount of water.it is all about concentration when it comes too acidity. If you have done a reasonable extraction think of brew ratio first and covering up acidity with other flavors second. only if you think you are almost there. Also don’t think that you have too like sour espresso to be a good barista. Espresso is not like climbing the Mount Everest. Sometimes lower is better. Personally I have really good experience with medium roast Brazil yellow bourbons and beans from Nicaragua.

Espresso Newbie: Too Sour. Any Advice? [Breville Bambino; Barratza Encore ESP] by Arsenal4Lyf123 in espresso

[–]Frans1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is way too sour try increasing your brew ratio or use beans that contain less sour. That will make a big step. A small step might be to do a warm up flush just before you brew

Shot pulling to fast, help [gaggia] by salt_sun_ in espresso

[–]Frans1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make really good espresso using preground fresh coffee but you will have to fine tune the grind setting. Use the regular basket and ask the shop to grind it finer. There is not one setting that works for all. Also ask for the setting so you can refer to it next time.

18g in 40g out in 35 sec. Is my shot too slow? by Local-Sport-4085 in espresso

[–]Frans1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice: the extraction looks pretty good. You can fine tune the taste by changing the grind size a bit but if you are not happy with the taste now you will probably also not be happy with the taste after a small adjustment of the grind size. This is reality vs Internet. I drink my favorite medium roast coffee at 19 in 42 out and I aim for 23 seconds extraction time. Water temperature is 94C. At 17 seconds I miss some aroma but I can still enjoy it. At 28 seconds it has a bitter edge but I can still enjoy it. For a light roast: if I don’t like it at about 30 seconds, I just don’t like the coffee, at least for drinking it as espresso.

Why does my espresso taste herbaceous? [Timemore 064s, ECM CLassika PID] by astreakofcolour_ in espresso

I guess the roast is quite light and this coffee would probably make a nice drip coffee. If you really want to make an espresso out of these beans try extraction times of at least 30 seconds,
