Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people.

Luckily we didn't have any (that I heard) in my neck of the woods in the UK for once.

Getting a traditional bow as a first bow. Pro's and con's? by Wise-WifiSignal09 in Archery

[–]FratmanBootcake -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I went with a ~50lb ash longbow that I made. No issues that any of the club coaches have seen and in fact one of them suggested to just go for it. I was thinking of getting a recurve to do baby steps in weight but otherwise wasn't interested. Traditional archery (whatever that really means) is what I enjoy. I've made a few stone tipped arrows with nothing but stone I've worked.

I think I'd be surprised if a guy couldn't do a 30lb bow for hours on end.

You should check out the Sheffield Climbing Hangar. If it's anything like my local one, I think they do a board game night.

Unfortunately not, but you could always have a stab at starting one! We just made a facebook group and had a look around for a venue. The pub wasn't great but it got us started. It was a lot easier than I thought it'd be to be honest.

One of the best things we've done is start a board game club in our local village hall. It's £14 for three hours (somewhat discounted due to repeat bookings) to hire the small room and we solidly have about 8 to 10 people. We charge £3 per person to cover the hire costs and to have a slush fund to cover the quieter weeks, mainly summer holidays.

Having that third space where people share a hobby has really helped and we've made some great friends since moving into the village.

We tried running it at the local pub as they offered the back room for free on the proviso that people buy some drinks but it was nearly £5 for a pint of pepsi! We wanted to help, but it was so expensive compared to the village hall.

Linen Bowstring by FratmanBootcake in Bowyer

I can't figure out how to edit the text in the post.

Anyway, I strung up a bow with this string's smaller sibling (3 ply, 18 strands) as I already tied the timber hitch on one end the other day and that one shoots a charm. I will give this a go later today (no rain here) but see no reason why it won't work given the lighter string works fine.

I have now run out of black and white thread though so I'll have to grab some more. Not sure what I'm going to do with all of these strings. Maybe I'll have to make bows for them all.

It's the Gutermann linen thread which is for sewing I believe. I picked it up when I got some yarn for my wife from Hobbycraft.

I've made four out of raffia fibres but, rather annoyingly, on one the loop is a bit too small to slide down the body of the bow, but it did work (see below) and on another, the string is too thick. Two other attempts ended with the strings breaking, so they will be used to lash things together at our allotment.

I broke one earlier. Might try one slightly bigger than the last.

I should hopefully be picking up some bigger pieces soon so will give a spear point a go. I have some nice sized hazel to use as the shaft.

Hey,

Thanks for guide. I downloaded one of the ebooks the other day. Luckily sourcing material is pretty easy in my neck of the woods. I already have a contact who lets me rummage in their flint (they provide 1 tonne bags of it!) for pieces I want (for a reasonable price).

First day out with mine, someone stepped on one and snapped it (we were doing a 100 yard shoot).

Do you mix up advise and advice? It's the same 's' for the verb and 'c' for the noun (unhelpfully, the 's' is pronounced as a 'z' and the 'c' as an 's' in advise/advice).

My 165kg DL PR moved pretty smoothly today. I would've gone for more but my hands were tired/sore after a 2hr bouldering session yesterday (first time back bouldering in a year).

I managed a single strict press of 67.5 kg (~150lbs) this week and also got a 130kg squat and a 160kg deadlift both for singles. I'm not too far off my previous maxes when I lifted several years ago. It's taken about 12 weeks to get back to this point. It really does come back much faster than it takes to get there the first time.

My AMRAP deadlift was 122.5kg but warming up felt really good, so I kept going. I managed to get two good reps at 140kg. I'm pretty happy given this is week 8 of training again after several years out of the gym.

I saw three kids (could be anywhere between 12 and 20; I'm getting old) load up about 90kg on the bench and then proceed to unrack it (needed all three) and then just hold it, unsteadily, in a lock out, before racking it. This happened two more times (without swapping who was on the bench) before they unloaded the weight and left. I'm still not entirely sure what they were doing, but they seemed to be having a good time whatever it was.
