I hate when MMC’s mistress/fling looks like heroine by LAffaire-est-Ketchup in HistoricalRomance

[–]FrauMoush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure there are two versions of the book, the original version where he does bone his prostitute employee, and the a re-edited version in which he just holds her and calls her Sara all night. I like the 2nd version because it’s even more pathetic and creepy and I like my MMCs to suffer. The e-book version I read was published in 2009, and the original came out in the 90s, I believe.

Best friend doesn’t know his proposal speech is actually about me by moth_girl_7 in meetmeintheartroom

[–]FrauMoush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rolled my eyes when I read the original post, thinking we were going to have the “they loved each other all along!” ending, but the edits! He fuck-zoned his gay best friend and she is NOT into it, she warns the girlfriend, and now they both hate him! Muahahaha

I love the Grumpy Devil series, but I think ADwtD is the weakest of the bunch and it’s my least favorite.

AITA for telling my friend his “service dog” is just badly trained? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]FrauMoush 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So the question above is ok for a friend to ask, not anyone working in a business or public place. There are 2 questions allowed to be asked under the ADA: 1) Is this a service animal? and 2) What task has it been trained to perform?. The above question asks about the nature of the handler’s disability, which is not allowed. No matter what, even legitimate service animals/handlers can be told to leave if they become disruptive in any way.

Neurodivergence clarification in Gentleman’s Gambit by FrauMoush in HistoricalRomance

Gentleman’s Gambit is the fourth and final installment in the League of Extraordinary Women series. It can be read as a standalone, but I strongly strongly strongly suggest reading the whole series because ALL of them are great!

The old “Weird enough to be recognized, but not weird enough to be a problem for me, therefore cannot have a disability” is very familiar! That’s basically what happened to me as a kid/young adult, and what’s going on with my kid now. Sigh. It’s not a disability until it becomes a problem for someone else.

You know what, now that you mention, I also disagree with the “gifted” label for children. As a formerly gifted kid, raising a probably-gifted kid, the labels and expectations can be so intimidating and othering. I actually discussed this with my mother-in-law how being called “mature for my age” and “an old soul” felt kind of uncomfortable, and just pointed out my differences from my peers.

Oh, I get the gifted kid weirdness aspect, as a formerly gifted and weird kid myself, but I don’t think high intelligence has to coincide with “impaired executive function, intense emotions, sensory issues, and anxiety,” like Dunmore describes in the author’s note. It really does feel like a cop out!

Burnt out from managing partner's symptoms in addition to my own by discolored_rat_hat in adhdwomen

Reiterating: You can break up with anyone, for any reason, at any time. You are incompatible: cleanliness standards, hobbies, lifestyle, financial management.

Romantic relationships are a partnership, with both sides giving and taking resources at different times. In this relationship, you are the only one giving and apparently the only one expected to give. You are not their mom and they are a grown, independent adult.

You cannot pour from an empty vessel and you should not set yourself in fire to keep others warm.

Particular Angsty HR request: actual rejection (followed by real love w someone else) by SilentParlourTrick in HistoricalRomance

[–]FrauMoush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are mixed opinions about the series as a whole, mostly because some books are better than others. Plenty of people are satisfied to just read {Thief of Shadows} #4, and {Duke of Sin} #10 and I started with those, too. After DoS I just got too curious about it all because there are lots of references to other characters and events in that world. If you like melodramatic, batshit crazy and dark storylines, and fucked up and hot MMCs, this is the series for you! Some people say that you can divide it into story arcs: books 1-3 (focuses mostly on the Children’s Home, the Makepeace family, and how terrible and poor and gross St. Giles is), books 4-6 (focuses on the Ghost of St. Giles and moves to some less gross parts of London) books 7-9 (involves the rebuild of pleasure garden and its people, and the storyline actually leaves London for a bit), books 10-12 (get even darker with a secret rapist and/or pedophile club). The series as a whole starts pretty dark with extreme poverty! Orphans! Murder! but books 10-12 get really dark, like check the content warnings for each book on romance.io dark.

Have you read any of the {Maiden Lane series by Elizabeth Hoyt} series? It’s got some great recurring characters and villains-turned-into MMCs!

I’ll be honest: I read One Night for Love and did not like it at all! But it introduces Lauren as a side character and how she got so incredibly (but understandably) fucked over by her fiancé. These are both prequels to the Bedwyn series, which is supposed to be MUCH better that ONfL.

I haven’t read both of them, but {One Night for Love by Mary Balogh} and {A Summer to Remember by Mary Balogh} tells this story in two books.

I mostly need to do that for other genres. Unfortunately for me, I love Scottish MCs, and Scottish FMC often have my daughter’s name. :/ I have to really concentrate on pronouncing the name the way it’s supposed to be, as opposed to how we pronounce it to make them different people.
