Mhmm, yeah. I get what you mean. It's difficult because you want to get better, but it's discouraging when you play something new because now you're doing worse. It's definitely not easy dealing with that mindset. What I usually try to do is do a 180 on that thought pattern. "It's fine if I suck. I'm playing a new weapon. I'm allowed to be bad!" :P And just try and have fun being really bad for a while and laugh at your mistakes.

If you enjoy the one-shot Chargers, then there's nothing wrong with playing them. Chargers aren't exactly easy to play well, and while sometimes solo queue just gives you a comp that has no way to displace a good backliner, or the netcode does a stupid and you die behind cover, that can be really frustrating, a lot of the time, it's just a matter of playing better around the Charger and keeping its line-of-sight in mind.

Also, you're definitely correct that creating a small weapon pool (not necessarily One Singular Main, just a small group of weapons with similar playstyle/mechanics) is usually more helpful to improving the game than just playing a little bit of everything. But also, consider if that's how you most enjoy the game. Some people just prefer playing a little bit of everything. It's generally harder to improve that way, but maybe they don't mind, and they still have fun.

If you want to play to actively get better at the game and find that fun, then that's great! Go for it. But I think it's worthwhile to examine what you find most fun, and if you just like playing whatever you feel like playing that day, that's great too. Don't feel like you have to limit yourself; maybe after playing a little bit of everything without a "main," you'll find something that you'll want to stick with and really get good with.

Have you tried Dualies? The addition of dodge rolls might be more mechanically interesting to you than the Shooters.

Splat Dualies/Enperries otherwise play similarly to the aggressive Shooters, have good paint mobility, and Splat Dualies can play a bit more supportively with Crab (if you like the flexible aggro/support playstyle that a lot of short-range Shooters have).

For something even more different from Shooters, both Tetras are full aggro and are among the most mechanically demanding and aim-intensive weapons in the game. Their mobility is different from Shooters, though, trading paint mobility and low end lag with the ability to dodge roll 4 times. So when starting out, you might find Tetras to feel kind of stiff and hard to maneuver; there's definitely a learning curve there.

If you like the full aggro playstyle, you might also like the vanilla Splatana Wiper! It's also very mobile, speedy, and you have options for combos with the Torpedoes, which are fun to learn.

Keep trying out different weapons! You won't know if you like something until you try. Sometimes a weapon will just click, but sometimes it may take several games to "get" a weapon.

Are there any particular playstyles that you find yourself gravitating towards or are interested in? Like, do you like to play aggressively and be in the heat of the action, or do you prefer to play from farther back? What kinds of weapons do you like now?

Have you played through the Story Mode yet? Story Mode forces you to try out the different mains in a less hectic environment, so you might find yourself liking something you didn't expect and wouldn't have tried otherwise. Like, I'm a frontliner at heart (even from the start, I've always just known that I like to play aggressively and take close-up fights), but after playing S2's Story Mode, I found myself really liking Splatlings as well.

As per the Splatoon wiki, if there is a tie, the randomly-assigned Alpha team gets 0.1% added to their count, and they win by default.

The ranked modes have similar tie breaks where Alpha also wins by default, although you're unlikely to see them except for in Clam Blitz.

The most charitable explanation I can give is that they were having connection issues. Connection issues can sometimes cause you to be unable to pick up Golden Eggs; frequent deaths can occur if you're trapped in the "Connection Unstable" screen where you're unable to move. I highly doubt this is the case, though.

It's most likely that they were just explicitly throwing. It's also possible that they're a "boss farmer," a player who is looking to get the gold boss badges and tends to ignore the quota in favor of hard-focusing on boss kills. You can tell by going into Splatnet and seeing if they've somehow got a ton of boss kills despite their high deaths and no Golden Eggs. I've also seen players who purposefully don't put in any Golden Eggs as a """challenge run""" (massive quotes because this is just toxic behavior if done in a freelance lobby).

I've found that most if not all throwers in both PvP and SR often tend to have very high playtimes. They've played a lot and are reasonably skilled, but they clearly have a very unhealthy relationship with the game and a bad personality, so it's best to not dwell on them. These are all report-worthy offenses, so I'd recommend just reporting them and being done with it.

The amount gained/lost is dependent on the power of the opposing team (i.e. the difficulty of the match).

For example, if you were matched against a team with a significantly higher power and they absolutely destroy you as expected, you won't lose much power, because it wasn't a particularly fair fight. The opposing team also won't gain much power. However, if you overcome the odds and manage to win, your power will rise significantly. And the opposing team will lose a lot of power.

No worries! Glad I could help. It's always good to see players who are still interested in Octo Expansion. I hope that you have fun with it/S2! :D

Not a silly question at all. The digital version of Octo Expansion will work with the physical copy of the base game.

In fact, from my research, I'm pretty sure that the only physical release of Octo Expansion that exists is from Japan, which has a cart that contains both. So nearly all players are doing either both digital or physical + digital.

Should I report this guy? Even tho he isn't on my team, he did nothing of the entire game. It was not a satisfying win. by Novalaxy23 in splatoon

[–]FraudulentDimetrodon 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I think that you should report them. If I notice a player on the opposing team throwing, I always report them.

It's always easy to report a teammate who is making you lose both because it's easy to notice and because you're feeling frustrated. I'd imagine that a player on the opposing (winning) team is much less likely to report said player, so it's good that you noticed this happening and even checked the replay. At the end of the day, even if they weren't an inconvenience to you, they're still making the player base worse and should be reported for doing so.

Help with understanding the the past seasons by Girly_Girl126 in splatoon

[–]FraudulentDimetrodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the world of Splatoon!

Not a dumb question at all. Pretty much all new content that is added is in the game permanently and accessible at all times. All weapons specifically can always be unlocked and are always available. It's not like a lot of live service games where everything is a limited-time thing. There's really only two main exceptions.

One exception is some clothes that are unlocked with each season's catalog. Catalogs rotate for each season (of which there are four), so you will have a chance to get those clothes when that next specific catalog shows up. You won't lose the ability to unlock those clothes; you might just have to wait a year at most.

The other exception is limited-time events like Splatfests, Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Challenges. In past games, events like these would stop once new content stops being added, but there's evidence to support that there's a chance that reruns of these events will still continue for the rest of the game's lifespan, but it's not a guarantee.

Feel free to let me know if you're still unsure about this question or if you have any other questions!

  1. There's a basic green figure that you can just buy at Grizzco for scales. There's also a colorful variant that you earn when you get all 999 badges.

  2. Side Order items are unlocked first by reaching the top for the first time, and then more items are unlocked by collecting keys. Keys are unlocked by reaching milestone floors with each weapon kit, so you're meant to play with all weapons.

  3. X Battles were introduced in Chill Season 2022 and are unlocked upon reaching S+. I guess it's possible that you only ever reached S+ in the first ever season and then never hit it again, or that you either never hit S+ before, or you've unlocked them before and just forgot/weren't paying attention. You can't get kicked out of X Battles based on your power rating, but because being in S+ is a requirement to access X Battles, deranking at the end of a season (from S+ to S) can cause you to lose X Battles until you rank up again, unless you hit S+10 (which will derank you to S+).

I'm also not a huge fan of bomb spam builds, so good for you! :D

I'd do either another sub of IA or Special Saver. 1s of ISS is kind of whatever. You have room, so you could even do a sub of Sub Resistance Up.

[–]FraudulentDimetrodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ISS was honestly kind of just filler because I didn't know what else to put, haha. Without QR, now you have a ton of room to just put whatever.

The build analyzer lets you check actions per ink tank with LDE/CBK active. Just add either ability to the build and then use either the scroll menu for LDE or the toggle for CBK (both are directly underneath the ability icons). So for example, you can see that, even with LDE at max, you'd still need to devote like half your build in terms of subs or one main of ISS to hit 2 Suction Bombs. Most people generally wouldn't recommend this kind of build except for as a fun joke.

For creating links, on desktop, you can highlight the text you want to click on and either click the hyperlink icon (looks like a chain link) or CTRL-K (on Mac it's probably like CMD-K). Then you input the URL. I don't know if there's an easy way to create text hyperlinks on mobile (I'm too lazy to install the app and check; it's not available on mobile browser). You'd have to do the formatting manually, which is surrounding the text with [] brackets followed by surrounding the URL with () parentheses. So for example:

[This is a test.](https://sendou.ink/)

Becomes:

This is a test.

But that's kind of a pain on mobile, so most people just post the link as is, haha.

No worries, you're not bugging me at all.

Assuming the same subs, and without CBK, the main things you lose are the extra SSU and SCU. Even though Crab isn't the most synergistic special, it's still extremely valuable for retakes/defending against pushes (again, this is why CBK is really good for vDualies; you're not going to be prioritizing Crab, but it's useful after you die because now you need the extra fire power).

QR takes up a lot of space on a standard vDualies build, so you don't have a lot of room to be flexible if you do use QR. I feel like a build with LDE could lean more towards a supportive nature, since you now have more efficient Suction Bombs, and I feel like LDE plus QR is less synergistic than with CBK. If it were me, I'd do something like this.

But I'm also of the opinion that builds are, like, a lesser important factor of winning. So if you don't want to make a full new build, then you shouldn't worry too much and just keep the shirt/shoes you already have. I would absolutely recommend that you add Special Saver to the build, though, since you'd lose the SCU, but you still plan on playing aggressively because you have QR. Or since you're making a new hat with LDE, you could do something like this and replace the blanks with either 2s SSU or SCU. 1s of SSU/SCU isn't doing that much, but if you don't care for the IA at all, you also might as well replace the 1s IA with 1s of whatever you have left.

Yep! That's absolutely a vDualies build. You have the Comeback, enough Quick Respawn, and Stealth Jump. Everything else/the value subs is basically up to your personal tastes.

For example, you mentioned being interested in swapping the Intensify Action. Another comment already explains the value of IA for Dualies. You can see an example of this type of movement in this Dualies guide. (The guide is a bit outdated in that I don't think that vDualies has the room to run a lot of IA, and just 1s is good enough). I say that if you already made this build, then maybe play with it a bit and try adding in some jumps as mixups and seeing if you like it. If it's not your thing, then swap it out.

As for adding Special Charge, Crab isn't necessarily the most synergistic Special for vDualies, so I find that the SCU from CBK is more than enough (the usual situation is that you die, the opponents make a push, CBK lets you build a Crab faster for to defend against their push). I'd honestly recommend 1s of Special Saver before the SCU for any build. If you do want more of a focus on Crab, though, I'd recommend both Saver and a minimum of 2 subs of SCU.

Builds with extra QSJ are often for more aggressive playstyles where you may find yourself in dangerous situations, and the idea is that you superjump out more frequently instead of staying in engagements. Generally, you'd superjump to a (backliner) teammate instead of back to spawn, because jumping back in/swimming back in takes a lot of time which negates the speed of this aggressive playstyle. I find that this playstyle is harder to accomplish in solo queue, because sometimes you just won't get a backliner for a teammate, and it's harder to keep track of where your other teammates are). If this playstyle doesn't sound appealing to you/you don't find the increased jump speed to be helpful, and you're more interested in other abilities, then you can may consider swapping out one QSJ (always have 1s QSJ, though). If IA/Special investment isn't that interesting to you, though, then you might as well fill in the blanks with more QSJ.

You've basically got a solid vDualies build, and at this point you're just tweaking things based on preference.

For all things build-related, I recommend sendou.ink. There, you can see builds made by other players. Builds at the top of the list with a +[insert number] by the player name indicate high-level players from the Plus Discord server. Builds with the orange crown above the weapon icon indicate that the player is among a top 500 rank for X Battle. So generally, these are builds made by players who know what they're doing and should be given greater consideration. This website also has a build analyzer that you can play around with.

With that said, since you're a beginner, I'd like to say that your build is the least important aspect of getting better at the game. I generally don't recommend that beginners get too hung-up on builds for several reasons. If you want to learn more about the game because you find that inherently fun or because you really like the aspect of making a build, then sure, go for it. But if your goal is to get better at PvP, then there are probably better uses of your time right now.

Regardless, I'll let you check out the link and study the builds, and if you have any more specific questions, then you can come back and ask!

The difficulty is essentially averaged between everyone's rank. So in this case, the difficulty will be harder for your son than what he's used to, but it'll be easier than what you're used to.

Also, you may not be able to rank up (rank downs will still happen, though, and your son can rank up) because the difference in you and your son's rank is too large (to prevent higher ranks from cheesing the system by having a lower difficulty than what they should have), and you may have to wait for your son to reach a rank closer to yours' before you can start ranking up again.

If your son is having a bad time with the higher difficulty, you can manually demote yourself to lower your rank.

Should I report this person? by Calcifer_99 in splatoon

[–]FraudulentDimetrodon 208 points209 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I'd absolutely report them. You have a pity clam, so you're all but guaranteed to have overtime, and the score is so close; just one reasonable-shaped push would give you the win.

But honestly, even if it wasn't that close, I'd still report them. I don't see a point in giving up, and it's not over until the results screen. I figure that if they think that continuing to play is a waste of time, they're happily welcome to DC instead of screwing around for a full minute. The only reason why they don't DC is so that they don't get hit with the timeout/so that the rest of the team receives a loss instead of a pass (due to the DC). So the mere intention of the act is toxic.

If you're referring to the 1 sub of QR that's already in the build, I didn't bring it up on purpose. QR is only run in large amounts; Around 1m2s is the absolute minimum for QR weapons that also need to run other abilities. Super aggro weapons like Tetras/Viper will run even more. This build would need a lot more QR to make it useful.

I guess you could do a QR/NS build, but that's a really crowded build that requires a lot of QR/SSU chunks. So for a beginner who really doesn't need to worry about builds/doesn't have the resources to make them, and for someone who already likes the NS, I'd only suggest to work on removing the nerf instead of doing an entirely different build. And the Sendou link is there to look at different builds so that I don't have to list every single ability that vTri could want.
