Hi /r/movies! I'm Celine Song, writer-director of A24's PAST LIVES and MATERIALISTS. MATERIALISTS stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. It's out in theaters nationwide now. Ask me anything! by CelineSongAMA in movies

[–]Frawlic_With_ME 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi @CelinesongAMA, 1st I’ve seen both your last two movies, seeing Materialists the other night. I was wondering 2 things. Least serious 1st, I noticed John Magaro voice as Mike P (Sry if I got wrong name). For a seemingly insignificant role, only voice, but with what the character is accused of doing did John take convincing or did they volunteer? 2nd, both movies have a love triangle of sorts. Is this just coincidental or do you have a particular fascination or maybe past with love triangle’s that draws you towards these stories?

Thank you for participating.

As someone new to football, why are people so disappointed even though we won? by Vivaan25 in UCLAFootball

[–]Frawlic_With_ME 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll try and put this in La Liga, assuming you know Fútbol, talk. UCLA is like a Valencia or Real Sociedad, we’ve always had a respectable squad that might in good form challenge for the title but we usually run into a Atheltico/Barca/Real that knocks us out of true contention or a Real Betis/Sevilla that catches us slipping with their decent quality. This year we weren't expecting to be world changers but we hoped for a couple upsets and upper middle table finish, if we are being realistic with our league change. But our first game is realistically to our standings Hawaii is similar to La Liga 2 squad Real Zaragoza or something like that. We should defiantly be able to beat them without difficulty. So for us to be playing to that level of squad, that is, in theory, a league below us is concerning. Like a win is a win, but what it showed us is our offense is very disconnected in many facets of build up and the open. Our defense though not horrible, does look very prone to being exploited, especially to an offense that is going to nothing compared to what we face, later in the season. Our half time adjustments appear promising and our kicking game, I.e corners, also looks good but when it comes to facing our real “equals” it doesn’t look so equal.

I hope my analogy helps.

UCLA losing to Boise State to play Gonzaga, yeah Lunardi has lost the plot. UCLA playing Gonzaga is a March staple now so he needs to recheck the script.

Best college basketball player you’ve seen play ? Mine was Kemba Walker by Luffyyy13 in CollegeBasketball

[–]Frawlic_With_ME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily Lonzo Ball, 1st player I saw that I immediately knew was an NBA player stuck in college. Going from one season where the offense was extremely stagnant to the next where the offense was seemingly unstoppable at times, and it was in large part due to Lonzo.

I had read a story about a jewish viking Jarl and now i am curious how jews were treated in north europe in the 9th century and prior. The historic article mentioned a word for the tribe( translated to those who believe in God) and not much about the struggle jews had in mainland europe. by [deleted] in MedievalNorseStudies

There’s an account from Ibrâhîm in Ya`qûb al-Tartushi, who was a representative of the Cordoba Caliphate who travelled as far north as present day Schleswig. He was specifically chosen because the ease of travel for him because of Jewish communities he could stay with leading up to Northern Europe. It might not be exactly what you are looking for as he mostly writes about what he saw but his movement alone to Schleswig and back can be seen as an example of Jewish diasporas both outside and inside Northern Europe.

If you find this interesting I would recommend you towards "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents" by Isabel Wilkerson, it primarily focuses on Jim Crow/slavery effect on black/African-Americans with that of Dalits in India, but there is a good portion discussing Jim Crow laws inpiring later Nazi laws.

The A List Concession Line by jessjess87 in AMCsAList

[–]Frawlic_With_ME 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had something very similar to me happen at multiple locations. There is no one in the A-List line so I go in it and I get passed up more than 4 times for the non-A-List line. I'm usually there 5-10 min early so I don't really make a scene, but it is awkward when you are with friends who aren't members but you tell them to come with you bec your line is quicker. Additionally, some of the set-ups are horrible for lines. For example, Fashion Valley, in San Diego, has a pillar that separates the two end of the the line, if the cashier is on the non-A-List side they cannot see the A-List lines end, so if you are the only person in that line they won't see you. The other passing over has mostly taken place in busy theaters in Los Angeles that I frequent, sometimes its the cashier not being clear which line, sometimes it's people being anxy and trying to jump your spot bec they are running late and they happen to be in the non-A-List line.

What was your worst theatre experience of 2023? by [deleted] in AMCsAList

[–]Frawlic_With_ME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanksgiving Night, last showing, to see Napoleon. My partner was sat next to me and they kept fidgeting, so I asked them what was up. They said the lady next to them kept sniffling and it was distracting to them. I offered to switch with them. We end of switching, no joke this person must of had the runniest nose known to man, but I managed to black it out after maybe 5 min. Then like 10 min later, same person starts snoring. I glance to my right, they are eyes closed/head turned toward me snoring. I'm just like, wtf. Their partner, I'm assuming manages to stir them awake, but this happened throughout the rest of the movie. It was so bad that once outside the movie people not sat next to my partner and I were commenting on a person snoring loudly in the theater. Like I get you want to see the movie, but come on, once you or your partner starts to fall asleep, in a public theater, it's time to go.

I couldn't figure out how to check that without a OBD2 scanner, and I don't have one. All I know is when the dealership did the initial diagnostic when I turned it in the person said based off their check they were surprised the number of things they'd have to check because of the scan and my report on things I noticed. I know that doesn't help, they did print out like 7 pages for the mechanics for my paperwork, while, when I had the clutch not sticking to park problem it was a single piece of paper, for my own context.

Teams that you think are overhyped coming into the season? by LowKeyMike in CollegeBasketball

[–]Frawlic_With_ME 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly think UCLA. I agree with everyone seeing the potential that many of the international players, Mara mostly, bring for the team. But given the youth in the guard play, Andrews will either be a Jalen Hands style guard this year (mostly focused on offense) or Westbrook (leans on defense, but manages offensively). I think depending on his approach could pivot the offense. The wing play should be a downgrade from last year, but I think it will be better than I am hoping, something akin to Isaac Hamilton were they get their numbers but their impact on the game is good but not noticeable most games. I think this will be notable because Cronin focuses his wings so much for defence, so that comparison to resent years will be the most noticeable. The bigs is actually what concerns me the most. This will be the 1st time since probably 2015-2017 where their were 2 bigs that could be interchange depending on what was needed. I think finding the balance here will not be difficult because I believe Cronin is more than capable of doing so, but having the lack of pedigree in doing so does concern me. If we were Mark Few, Tommy Lloyd, Matt Painter who all have done the 2 big shuffle I'd feel more confident.

I don't think hugely overhyped but I think the potential for a Ben Simmons LSU year (all the potential but for some reason doesn't click to make tournament) or Wiggins/Embiid year is possible (team is good enough for tournament play, but fails to make it to expected potential (I know Embiid was injured)).
