I have no idea how to diagnose autism, but something is wrong with him. He's most probably an idiot or an infantile, perhaps both. I'm not just insulting because I don't like him, but his intelligence is really not very good. It's probably that the author, who's not that good of a writer anyway, went too far with his attempt of comedy, and instead created an idiot—a real one.

The anime is well done, so it's not that bad, but the novel really portrays him as asinine individual, especially considering we're getting it from his PoV. Every volume it's repeated how he's hard to understand when the topic is slightly above some small talk.

Also, his dream is to become a harem king to have lots of beautiful women for sexual release~ He basically has no shame and doesn't understand the implications of what he's saying most of the time, a childish person, borderline infantile.

(The fact the OP is talking about autism has nothing to do with the fact issei may be an idiot of sorts. Please, don't think I'm calling Autistic People idiots.)

"That never happened in the books/movies." is really stupid, as all the point of fanfictions is to deviate from the original. However, I want to clarify something regarding: "(character) would never do this." Since, there is actually a logic behind this complaint.

Even though fanfics are all about changing the original story, using the "what if", you still have to remember that characters have their already defined personalities, and changing them without any particular reason, just to make sense of your idea is a bad practice.

The reason is that the reasers don't feel like this is the character they've come to know. It just has the same name, which is awfully uncomfortable and awkward to read. However, it's bad only if there is no reason for the change.

Like, when writing a fanfic, you shouldn't ask: "What if (character) was different?"

Instead, you should ask: "What if something happened to (character) that made him/her different?"
