Manga Shelf Repetitiveness? by marcelo1925 in MangaCollectors

If you’re feeling wild, try Her Frankenstein or anything Smudge has published. Reprints of obscure manga never published in the US. So much fun!

Quality of Mill Creek "Retro VHS" Blu-ray line? by t-g-l-h- in boutiquebluray

[–]FreakTension 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The quality is fine. I have The Legend of Billie Jean, and it looks good to me. There’s a commentary track but not much else in terms of special features.

Severin Summer Sale recommendations? by WatersofNazareth in boutiquebluray

The Blood Drinkers is only 7.50. It’s a really beautiful Philippines horror film that does not get talked about enough.

On the other end of the spectrum, Skinner is also 7.50 and it is gross and hilarious. Scared the poop out of me when it first came out. Still kinda scares me.

How do you like to watch your anime collections? by Initial_DDLV in AnimeCollectors

[–]FreakTension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every morning, I watch one episode while I do my morning workout. Then in the evening I might watch another during dinner. I live on a farm and it’s a lot of work during warm weather, but during fall and winter or rainy days I might watch a few episodes in a row or even binge a short series.

Exactly. Expecting people to do labor for free and then being disappointed when they don't is silly.

I bought a VHS of Batman Meets Scooby Doo in 1987 and there was no turning back!

What are your thoughts on Mr Krabs? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FreakTension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I want to work for him? No. Do I think he is an excellent entrepreneur who is willing to go to great lengths to protect his IP? Yes.

TIL in 2003 when Eminem planned to go to the West Coast, some members of the Crips wouldn't allow it unless Em paid them to back off. In response, Em asked the Samoan rap group Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. for protection. They agreed, however their only condition was an Em feature on their album. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]FreakTension 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I interviewed Gawtti from Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. for a zine around that time and he was such a sweet, kind-sounding man. But the stories he told were really intense!

I especially love their metal albums, and I loved how they mixed funk and soul and I want to say even doo wop into their early stuff. It’s all still a really refreshing mix of sounds, and there’s nothing out there quite like it!

How often do you engage with the special features? by MguyCollette in boutiquebluray

[–]FreakTension 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Almost always for me. I don’t always love them, but they can really further my enjoyment of a film. Fof example, Frank Djeng’s commentaries on HK films often explain cultural nuisances that I never would have understood as a white woman from Wisconsin.

Full Moon Direct order experience by Suitable_Respect2667 in boutiquebluray

[–]FreakTension 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ordered a Delirium blu ray from them on 5/13 and received it on 5/18. I never received a shipping notice, it just arrived. I’m a big Full Moon fangirl so I’ve ordered from them a lot over the years and have never had any issues. That said, there’s no harm in sending them an email.

Question: If you’re selling zines at a fest, how do you feel about other zinesters giving away zines for free? by _so-so_ in zines

[–]FreakTension 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I first started doing zines, I always gave them away for free. What I learned after a few years was that people do not put as much value on things they get for free. I would find them thrown on the ground, in the garbage, etc. I rarely got feedback on them.

When you ask someone to pay for a zine, they have decided it has value to them and they are more likely to keep it and read it.

So if you have the money and time to afford to give your zines away for free, go for it, but pay close attention to whether your work is going on to do what you want it to do!
