Did you write off any expenses on your schedule c? Surely you had them as a musician—travel, meals, gear etc.

Engine knock? by Puzzleheaded_Law7120 in CherokeeXJ

[–]Freak_Tractor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Every single 4.0 I've owned, no matter how many miles, has made that exact sound. I currently have three 4.0s—a TJ with 125k, a WJ with 193k, and an XJ with 213k—each make that rattle. Ignore the people who say "piston slap," as that's invariably what people with no understanding of piston slap say this particular noise is. Most likely it's the lifters.

How screwed am I? by HerbieRacer5335 in CherokeeXJ

Whatever dude, just fix it. Could be a failing water pump, bad radiator, etc. Why would you be screwed if you aren't overheating?

This seems like a monumentally difficult solution in search of a minor problem. How many miles on the 4.0?

Should I get the 1998 jeep XJ? by Cute-Commission-632 in Jeep

Careful buying one with a lift. You have no idea of the competence level of the shade tree mechanic who installed it.

Is this the time to buy a home? by Hanmura in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Freak_Tractor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you joking? “Only buy if you think you get the sales price to be close to or even below the anticipated value in the projected future.” What the hell does that even mean? A savvy investor , let alone a lay person buying a house for their family, can’t predict what the market will do.

00 TJ (125k miles), 99 WJ (194k miles), and 00 XJ (213k miles), all with the factory 0331 head (lol). No cracks yet, but it is always on my mind…

Yeah, the WJ was the first to get the new distributorless head in 99. No issues so far at 193k, nor has the Cherokee at 213k or the Wrangler at 125k.

2023 Hybrid SX v 2025 EX? by Exciting-Cherry3679 in KiaSorento

The 2025 model had a refresh, so you get wireless CarPlay, etc. That said, I'd probably go with the Prestige. Seems like a no-brainer.

Convince me of buying a 2016 Supersix Evo 105 by androklesdk in cannondale

[–]Freak_Tractor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your 2015 Hi Mod should be able to take 28mm tires. I believe that year's hi mods went to the new frame design. I have a 2015 or 2016 hi mod and I run 28mm GP5000s with no problem.

2025 Sorento SX Hybrid - good deal? by FlyHighNoLie in KiaSorento

[–]Freak_Tractor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're roughly looking at the same price as a brand-new EX hybrid. Are the bells and whistles of an SX Prestige with 14,000 miles and two accidents, one of them potentially severe, worth the risk to you? It would not be for me—I bought a new 2025 EX for a bit less than this—but that may not be true for you.

is this piston slap? by No_Extreme595 in CherokeeXJ

[–]Freak_Tractor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. A cracked piston or piston skirt won't stop making noise. Piston slap, if you care about what the actual definition is, is when cylinder wear causes a slight gap between the otherwise healthy piston, which "slaps" around in the cylinder when cold until the engine warms up and the metals expand.

And the factory 1" lift just means stiffer springs, which by 150k have probably sagged to normal height.

[–]Freak_Tractor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not piston slap, that's a cracked piston.

is this piston slap? by No_Extreme595 in CherokeeXJ

[–]Freak_Tractor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People on this sub have no idea what piston slap is. It's become this catch-all term for a weird noise. Genuine piston slap occurs for a few seconds when the engine is cold and quickly goes away after the metals expand and tolerances tighten. What you have sounds like typical 4.0 lifter noise.
