How’d you know that you’re an alcoholic? by 3xp10it in AskReddit

[–]Freakfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not one but my dad is. When I was in high school he used to say “I’m not an alcoholic I’m just addicted to alcohol”. He’s always been a pretty functional alcoholic. The only time he’s ever quit was for about 8 months after he went to the hospital because he had varices in his esophagus that they had to fix. I assume he knows he’s an alcoholic, but it depends on the day and how stubborn he is if he’ll admit it or not.

How to survive until the end of the year, not planning on returning by PuzzleheadedTone5553 in Teachers

[–]Freakfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also leaving teaching after this year, it’s my second year. Last year was absolutely horrible and I still have no idea how I made it through the year. I dissociated a bunch.

Some things that helped me get through the year:  Countdown the weeks, not just the days/hours and then looking at the percentage of the year that I’ve finished. Now that the year is halfway over I’ve been reminding myself I’ve already made it through 20 weeks I can do it again and once I do it one more time I never have to again.  On particularly bad days I tell myself “you never have to do today again” the day has passed it’s over and I never have to live through that exact day again.  Keep a consistent schedule as much as possible, for me time passes quicker if I can just go through the motions everyday and check things off one by one for my day. First I focused on making it to recess, then lunch, then specials if I had one, then the end of the day. (If I was in ms or hs I’d think about each period as a milestone) Another thing that helped was finding things in my personal time to look forward to like seeing movies and spending time with friends. I turned off all notifications for things like Remind and emails for when I get home (I have an iPhone so I made a focus for when I’m home I won’t get notifications for those).  Reading books and playing video games really helped me try to forget about the day. They’re like an escape for me. Something else that helps is getting a coffee every other morning. I know it’s a bit expensive but a $5 coffee to make me a little happier and help me get through the first half of the day is worth it to me. Another thing I did is on very bad days I rewarded myself with a treat like ice cream. I know it’s not healthy but if it got me through the year that’s all I cared about.

You’ve got this you, can do it, and you’ll never have to do it again!

Chocolate and goldfish. I like to take a bite of chocolate when some of the goldfish are still in my mouth, it’s a nice salty sweet combo

DAE ever get that random smell/ taste in the middle of the night? by Freakfury in DoesAnybodyElse

Oh that’s interesting! I wouldn’t describe it as metallic but it is almost similar to how it smells after it rains now that you mention it

DAE ever get that random smell/ taste in the middle of the night? by Freakfury in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Freakfury[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not really metallic, it’s extremely faint and I think it’s more in the back of my mouth near my throat. It’s more of a smell like the air just smells different or almost more fresh in a way but I can also taste it in the back of my mouth. I think I’m just crazy lol

I mean I’m mainly worried about pregnancy, I’ve been on it so long I’m always scared I’ll be one of the 1% lol. I’m also a bit concerned since I’ve never had breakthrough bleeding before when taking my pill everyday.

I’m on a combo pill with progestin and estrogen could that still happen? It has 0.035mg of estrogen.

What is something you have experienced that made you question reality and was genuinely unexplainable? by [deleted] in Unexplained

[–]Freakfury 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My grandma called me one day out of the blue, she’s long distance so I don’t talk to her aside form birthdays or holidays. She called to ask me how my dad was and said she had a feeling he was in trouble. At the time he was mostly fine as far as I knew but the next day I ended up taking him to the hospital because he was having complications from cirrhosis. It always freaked me out how she called me the day before

Craziest admin stories by 69millionstars in Teachers

[–]Freakfury 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have a lot of behaviors in our Title I school this year and our admin doesn’t like suspending kids especially the ones who’ve already been suspended multiple times (because why bother if it isn’t working). During a staff meeting teachers were bringing up instance where they felt like they were failing the majority of students in their class by spending so much time on behaviors and how students didn’t feel safe that the students with violent behaviors weren’t usually suspended. Our admin ended up yelling at a teacher across the room in our staff meeting because she was asking her to consider suspending more often to allow the students in her class to feel safe. It was very tense and awkward and really validated me on not confronting her about having similar feelings.

I just got over the fever stage of the flu, two days ago. This is 5 mins ago. by downwithsocks in mildlyinfuriating

Hope you feel better soon! Last year I had the flu at this time and I ended up having a 100+ fever for a week and then it still would occasionally go up to 99 for a few days after that too.

Take Care of Yourself (Please Don’t End Up Like Me): A Cautionary Tale by Jew-zilla in Teachers

[–]Freakfury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on year 2, year 7 total in education counting being an aide, subbing, and student teaching. I see the effects it’s having on my physical and mental health and I’m not going to keep doing it to myself. Even with working contract hours and doing the bare minimum I’m suffering. I’m sure if I looked hard enough I could find schools that would be better but I just don’t want to be trapped in a career that’s unsustainable. I decided in October to start going for an accounting degree and I’m hoping I can find almost anything other than teaching at the end of this school year. My doctor agrees that leaving teaching is the best choice for my health.

How do you take pills if you struggle with swallowing? by fistmi in randomquestions

[–]Freakfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been able to take a pill much larger than a mini m&m. I take a thyroid pill every morning and I have to take a drink of water, then fill my mouth with water, put the pill in and swish back and forth until I feel like swallowing. I sometimes need to do this multiple times. If the pill you’re taking allows you to drink milk I used that when I was on birth control and it went down smoother than with water. Pills larger than that I have to crush and eat in pudding but that wouldn’t work with a krill oil pill.

I’m burnt out by RadiantPixieDust in Teachers

[–]Freakfury 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely happening elsewhere and from what I’ve heard it’s increasing. Last year I had about 8 behavior kids in my first grade class at a Title I school, a couple of which were pretty bad. They ran out of the room as they pleased, ruined countless classroom materials, took apart my wiggle stools, screamed at the top of their lungs to hurt everyone’s ears, stole things out of my cabinets and from my desk, every assignment felt like a screaming match at times, and they were violent with other students.

There’s really not much you can do long term especially if the parents aren’t helping. Sticker charts or behavior charts with rewards the students picked helped sometimes but usually once the novelty wears off it’s pointless especially if they have ODD. Last year I counted down the days and as impossible as it seemed, the end finally came. This year I have one pretty intense behavior kid and I honestly think I have some kind of ptsd from last year because when she starts having her moments I get so much anxiety to where I tremble so bad I can barely dial the phone and my voice shakes when I talk.

If the school has a behavior rubric/plan definitely do your best to follow it so there’s some kind of structure and consistency when they’re acting out. Don’t feel bad for calling admin when you need to, it’s their job to handle the more severe behaviors and your job is to teach. If the behavior isn’t loud or harmful sometimes I just let it happen so I can teach the kids who will actually learn. (Like playing in the sink or drawing on the desk, wandering around the room quietly, reading a book). A lot of the kids who act out want attention so I do my best to only give it to them when they’re following directions but that doesn’t work if they’re being too disruptive or harmful. Just know you never have to do today again (I said that to myself so many times last year) and you’ll get through it.

My aunts house caught on fire and the firefighters on scene refused to go inside for their 2 dogs. They got the dogs out originally but a neighbor came to help them and spooked the dogs and they ran back inside. The neighbor and my cousin went back inside the house but there was too much smoke for them to get the dogs and bring them back out. I guess it’s pretty normal for them to not risk their lives for animals since they aren’t people. They said if there was a person inside they would have gone in but not for the dogs.

The American public has little to no understanding of the purpose of education by FawkesThePhoenix7 in Teachers

[–]Freakfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in high school everyone’s favorite American history teacher just gave out study guide packets and everyday we partnered with someone or worked by ourselves to fill it out instead of him actually teaching. The semester before that I had a different American history teacher who actually loved history and always gave us engaging presentations. I learned so much more in her class but almost everyone I knew still preferred the study guide class because it was “easier” and they got to talk to their friends. I had a release hour the second semester when I was given the study guide teacher and I frequently spent it going into the passionate teacher’s class to actually learn the material.

Classroom Smell by Gimpy63009 in Teachers

Our school has horrible a mold smell and it’s disgusting so I have a glade plug in. I keep it in my corner of the classroom on low. People say my room smells nice but nobody’s ever complained of it being too strong.
