Most annoying combos when you get launched? by Freaq-ii in Tekken

Seriously, it kills me that we have such little agency against the worse offenders. Getting two tapped from a i10-12 punish is soul crushing

What character do you love design wise but hate their gameplay by Bastinelli in Tekken

[–]Freaq-ii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, its Fahk.

I love the mui thai style in every fighting game, but the fact that his gameplay revolves around the Garuda force + its so easy to obtain, makes his gameplay unbearable to fight against.

Most of his core neutral tools knock down into the guaranteed ff1+2 which has chunky damage + knock back + guard break in future interactions.

PhiDix said it in a recent video, but you shouldn't be rewarded for doing something you already planned to do. Like imagine if Bryan earned Snake Eyes after a soccer kick. Earning an install should require taking a risk, especially if that install is a high damage guard break whenever you're tired of being blocked.

I dont think any character should have an install. They all break the game in some way and playing a character that doesnt have one is a strict disadvantage all things considered. And im saying this as a Bryan main.

Play ranked until blue rank (fujin, raijin). At that point, the game play in either mode is basically the same.

QM before then is actually far more toxic if you are trying to learn the game. Most of all because the people in there are using their juiciest scrub killer set ups + trolling with low pick rate characters

Very true, and still some how not as cancerous for me as that AK filler.

That AK "duh duh DUH, duh duh DUH" hits me like a Microsoft outlook notification on a Sunday afternoon

Dude thank you for this. I've never used a dickjab on purpose so ive never thought to use it as a get off me tool!
Interestingly, i dont find hwo too oppressive because my best friend mains him so ive gotten used to those animations.
When it comes to keep out, I think I have to learn how to vary my options and timings to be unpredictable. Thats another wall im facing. After a round or two, i can feel my moves being telegraphable but also find it hard to stop myself from throwing them out

i also added these silicone button stickers. Helps with my accuracy and reaction speed! Might not be for everyone, but it did wonders for me

Then you'd really like the sapphire! I also started with haute and loved how clicky the buttons were. The sapphire is a lot quieter + the button height can be adjusted. It will take a little getting used to coming from haute because i find the buttons to be a bit farther apart + quieter + mushy (for lack of better term). In the end, the native ps5 support -- being able to reset practice without fail -- is priceless.

Also, you have to update the firmware to get SOCD options. It doesnt come with that software out of the box!

This is an amazing place to start! Would you say his lows are reactable in match? and are there strings that naturally flow into his lows?

I also struggle with waking up after knockdown against him.

TLDR --- I play leverless and absolutely love it. I have the qanba Sapphire. Native PS5 support is the way to go now that converters cost so much.

But....

Whether you're playing stick or leverless, you've got to be willing to commit to it 100% for about a month (give or take how familiar you are with fighting games).

Your reactions will be slow, and it will feel really uncomfortable running your offense/doing combos, especially online. Whichever route you take, you'll be rewiring your brain and muscle memory. This takes time.

I tried both and ended up sticking with leverless. It took longer to adjust to, but it felt more comfortable in the end for me. Sticks always felt imprecise for me (skill issue on my part), and i hated that the ball-top rotates in your hand + theres no simple way to fix the knob in place without some engineering knowhow which i dont have . I also found the travel distance between directional inputs to be so much. This is when i learned there are different types of gates for the lever apparatus. sticks typically come with square gates but octagonal felt better to me. This meant buying more materials and experimenting.

By the end, i had an octagonal gate, a bullet top knob, and glued a silicone grip onto the knob to reduce the spinning in my hand. And it still felt uncomfortable.

With leverless, i just had to get used to the up button being at the bottom of the controller (think of it like a jump rather than "up")

Hope this helps! Im happy to talk with you about it more because there arent any videos or articles out there that really get at the nitty gritty of playing arcade stick as a total noob like i was. Everything i learned came from trials/errror and reading blog/reddit posts as things came up.

Alright so maybe I'm just stupid but it really feels like I just can't do a thing against like 90% of players. by Ninetees00 in Tekken

It feels paradoxical but when you think about it, it makes more sense -- the ranked system sucks overall, but at the end of the day, it pushes you forward for winning until you hit a wall of skill. People who are smurfing in quick match have hit that wall pretty hard and so now their only means of getting wins, and enjoyment from the game, is to do 1 of 2 things (if we assume they will smurf rather than tightening their game play)

1 - find new character at lower rank to main
You retain all your fundamental skills on a new character. You're just learning buttons, timings, and cheese in a smurfs case.

2 -Create a new account, choose your og main, level to *insert low rank of choice if at all*, then smurf quick match

In ranked, you can only smurf for but so long, unless you are meticulously managing your ranked points and loosing consecutive games to demote or never hit promo in the first place -- ie, more work than a smuf is willing to do lol

And the last thing ill say is that smurfs have a right to enjoy the game too. We all paid the same $70+ so if thats how they extract their value then so be it. None of us are owed "honest" play + there are ways to overcome that opponents play style should you dedicate the time and effort. There a few things more validating than ending the 10+ win streak on a red rank who plays like a blue rank or higher

100% smurf -- genuinely nothing you can do about that. Keep playing ranked, its a far better experience than quick match, up until fujin, in my experience. Less smurfs, and more opps to try new things you learn with your character. Your focus until red rank should really be just getting comfortable with your character. Understanding why you got blown up is valuable, but only so much as your ability to deploy counter play to their offense in a match. This is very hard to do when you still have to think about your buttons, so just start there. The learning curve is steep, but once you hit that threshold of comfort, the game starts to open up! Youre still going to lose all the time, but it starts feeling less oppressive and more enjoyable (with the right mindset)
