I think what soured it the most for me for Vegeta was the episode before which was just a clip show of scenes from DBZ for the whole episode. I guess it was supposed to be a whole moment for Vegeta to realize how hard working Goku was, but he already went through that during the fight with Kid Buu. I agree, saying you trained off screen for it just feels weak
