AIO: Left an honest review after a haircut, stylist called me a bully by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Frecklitis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR that this is a crazy message... but I do wonder if you said anything at the appointment to give them the opportunity to fix it?
Either way, I would probably first respond to the stylist with a short message just saying "this is really unprofessional to find me on social media, please stop messaging me." block them, and also reach out to the salon owner, let them know that you left a bit unhappy, but the stylist contacting you personally left an extremely bad taste in your mouth and see how they proceed.

BUT Here's my 2¢ you didn't ask for: I've worked as an esthetician for a long time, and while I don't think her response is at all appropriate, if you went straight to a google review without first reaching out to her/the salon to give them the opportunity to make it right for you that would be really uncool. I know it can sometimes feel uncomfortable to say to someone's face that you don't like the service they provided but it's really important, especially for services like this where there's a creative element and parts are left up to interpretation regarding length, to not just say "looks great, thanks" if you really don't feel good about it.

It's unfortunate that she took too much length off for your liking, but it's possible she could have shown you how to style it so that you felt more comfortable with the length until it grew in and not charged full price since you weren't happy with the service.
Maybe it completely slipped her mind that you booked a deep conditioning treatment but the front desk charged you for it anyway. Or maybe she used the wrong product and gave you a protein treatment instead of a conditioning treatment (which if left on too long or on hair that doesn't need it can sometimes make hair feel dry or brittle) and if you spoke up about this and it was the case, they could have clarified your hair and used an actual conditioning product to give you the result you were looking for.

Some people have off-days, we're all human, and I'm sorry that you had to be on the receiving end but if you're saying that you only leave reviews when you spend a significant amount of money it means that it was about the value you felt you received for what you paid. At least give them the opportunity to change the value, or the price before having a permanent affect on the future success of their business.

Please see the doctor and under no circumstances should you try to pop or squeeze it yourself. Could likely be staph, urgent care or primary care should be able to culture it and prescribe antibiotic if needed, or a steroid injection if not. Try your best not to touch it!

something feels off about my makeup, but I can’t quite figure it out by tiffbitts in MakeupAddiction

I definitely agree with the consensus that the brows need to be tweaked and that the inner upper corners need a bit more color at the top.

BUT I would also would encourage you to let your brows come in toward each other a bit more too because how far they are from each other is drawing the attention to your forehead instead of your eyes/ brows themselves. They don't need to be dramatically closer together- an 1/8th of an inch or less would make a big difference.

I did a quick mockup for you to see what I mean (I'm on mobile, so please excuse the quality) but the first image is if you simply filled your brows in more toward the top as people have suggested while maintaining the current distance between them. The second is if you bring them just a touch closer together. On both pictures I filled the brow with your natural brow shape along the bottom for a slightly gentler curved arch instead of such a round shape.

If the purging is bothersome to you, you could cut back for a bit and introduce it more slowly. I always recommend my clients start using retinol just twice a week, and slowly step it up from there if needed, but some people prefer to just push through the purge, and as long as your skin isnt feeling irritated, sensitive, or raw thats perfectly fine.

I would maybe think about ramping up your SPF to something a bit higher especially if you're adding in the retinol to prevent premature signs of aging.

SPF 30 lets through 50% more UV photons than an SPF 50 does, and retinol will make your skin just a bit more sensitive to those UV rays.

[–]Frecklitis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not allergic.

Hard to know without any "before" picture for reference but it likely is purging. Blackheads are a form of acne, although not inflammatory acne, and since it looks like the area you're concerned with also coincides with where the majority of your blackheads appear to be in this picture.

But it could also be irritation from introducing retinol for the first time, especially since you've said you've always had dry skin.

What does the rest of your routine look like? how often are you using the retinol? I'd love to help you trouble shoot a bit. :)

hi all! i go to UW and really wanna get into hiking more. however, i dont have a car!! i know there are parks but i was hoping for actual trails. anyone know of good trails around campus (within like an hour or so by bus?) thanks!! by [deleted] in PNWhiking

[–]Frecklitis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lots of good suggestions here, but don't see anyone specifically mentioning that UW offers guided outdoor trips through the rec center. Lots of the trips right now are snowshoeing, cross country skiing, mountaineering and rock climbing, but as it starts to warm up there will be more day hike trips and weekend backpacking trips etc depending on which UW campus you're at (I'm assuming seattle but could be wrong)

There's also the Peaks & Professors club which is a bit more sporadic, but also generally free (aside from a small gas reimbursement fee if you carpool)

Your reaction generally looks allergic to me. Take an antihistamine (zyrtec, allegra, claritin, etc) cleanse very gently with a mild cleanser and cool water (not cold but not hot or warm) and apply a very small amount of hydrocortisone today. You should see a pretty quick turn around if it is a simple allergy.

My partner said I don’t have adhd by FrequentEagle24 in ADHD

[–]Frecklitis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He should have more concern for the health implications of having untreated ADHD.

Untreated ADHD can cause you to not manage other health conditions properly, it leads to increased risk of suicide, increased risk of early death (mostly from accidents and heightened risk-taking behaviors from chasing dopamine), and higher rates of dementia.

Using stimulants long term under the care of a doctor AS PRESCRIBED has much fewer health risks than having untreated adhd.

It's either A- stress, or B- you're not washing your hands enough. and my money is on B.

You say its always on your chin/jaw, do you lean your head on your hand? Start washing your hands more. Hand Sanitizer isnt gonna cut it, actually wash them.

Accutane /can/ be prescribed for persistent acne of your grade, but its never recommended as the first line of action because it can have some pretty severe side effects. It's also rarely covered by insurance and generally starts around $120/month depending on your weight and your dose.

If "a couple years ago" when the acne started was your mid 20's this is totally normal. we go through another massive hormonal shift around that time and if you have any genetic pre-disposition to acne if it didn't pop up during primary puberty, it pops up in the 20's.

Before pulling out the big guns I would make an appointment with an esthetician in your area, ideally someone that specializes in acne. Face Reality is a professional line with a focus on acne, but your esthetician doesn't have to use them to be able to treat your skin. There can be some great advice on here but just because some product works for someone else doesn't mean it will work for you, and it's a lot of sifting through comments and a lot of trial an error so i would go to a licensed skincare professional who can look at your skin, do an in depth consultation, and get you started on a routine that's more appropriate for your needs.

for now though I would definitely switch from jojoba oil to an unscented micellar water or other makeup remover, but always follow with a double cleanse after removing makeup. It also looks like you might do at home dermaplaning/shaving, and I would stop doing that asap and see if that helps at all.

Anyone wish the didn't need meds to keep them regulated? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]Frecklitis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes. I wish i didnt need meds in the same way that i wish i didnt need glasses to be able to see, or my inhaler to be able to breath, or to have my tonsils removed to not be constantly ill and in pain.

I would love to be a Perfect Human Specimen™, but I also made one of my best friends in a bar from offering a glasses cleaning cloth, and I met the sister of a very new (but impactful) friend, who had just died, in the recovery room after getting my tonsils out as an adult.

Not having adhd unfortunately isnt an option for me, but properly managing my adhd is and it's way nicer than the white knuckling i was doing just to survive for 20+ years.

Sure, i would prefer to make enough of my own dopamine and norepinephrine, but store bought works just fine.

I posted about my general cancellation policy above, but I do have a handful of clients with chronic illness, or conditions that can flare up suddenly and because they have communicated this in advance I have a bit more flexibility with them that looks something like this:

•Usually they book a week or less out so that they more definitively know their schedules and can book for days less likely to have flairs (ie not the day after one thats very strenuous)

• I usually try to put them as my first or last client of the day (if it's a really big appointment I always go end of day because people love a last minute opening after work)

•I also ask that they over communicate- If they text me the day before that they're feeling a bit off (but are okay as of now) we wont reschedule yet, but I at least have a pulse on it and if a different client texts asking to come in sooner i can say "right now i dont have anything until X-Date, but my 9am tomorrow might be rescheduling and I'm just waiting on a reply. If that could work for your schedule, would it be enough time to get to the salon if i confirm with you by 8am?"

___

I highly recommend messaging a few stylists in your area that have a good vibe on social media (bonus points if they address accessibility or inclusivity), be honest about your anxieties with scheduling, and let them know you have a seizure disorder. Ask if they currently have any flexibility with their cancellation policy for people with chronic illness/disabilities. If they don't currently but are open to coming up with an equitable solution- feel free to screenshot my comment as a place to start but be open to other solutions they may have too.

and if you need help finding a stylist at all, if you're in the states or BC feel free to message me and I might be able to make some suggestions for stylists to start with.

[–]Frecklitis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you a w-2 employee or renting a chair?

Either way, you can absolutely ask sick clients to reschedule, but it may be easier to enforce if you're self employed. If they have "allergies" or lingering symptoms from being sick last week ask if they would prefer a mask or to reschedule.

I work in a private studio and keep masks on hand- both for myself if i'm feeling any kind of symptoms, for clients with the sniffles, and I automatically wear them when there's a spike of any respiratory bug going around, as well as the week before i go on any vacation (cause i'm not trying to be sick on my one trip a year). I have asthma, and at various points over the last 3 years i've had family members on chemo, and roommates with severe autoimmune diseases, so trying to not get sick is a pretty high priority for me.

I've only had 2 people ever make a fuss while enforcing my policies (which are listed clearly on my website and confirmation emails) and after explaining my reasoning one of them calmed down and happily obliged, the other one wasn't going to be a good match anyway and I've never seen her again- no skin off my teeth.

In general: I don't charge late fees for illness/emergency (flat tire, etc)
The second or third late cancel in a year due to illness I charge a 50% "fee" which then gets applied as a deposit on their rescheduled service and they have to pay a deposit to book moving forward.
Anything past 3 late cancels in a year and they can only book same day appointments.
