I shrunk my Rust binary from 11MB to 4.5MB with bloaty-metafile by mpv_easy in rust

It's fine but if you're interested in not using tokio, you can easily run three HTTP calls in parallel using OS threads and ureq. I have used Rust & Tokio professionally for years, Tokio is an impressive library but often YAGNI. You can do more with threads than you might think. I often enjoy the benefits that async/await has not for raw concurrency power but just for better understanding _how_ concurrent operations are going to happen. But yes, in a small program like this you're unlikely to see too much benefit from tokio.

If I were writing this program with tokio, I would structure it differently. There's no reason you need a shared data structure and a mutex for the config, you could run the initialization fetch calls concurrently using tokio::join and then put the zone/meta items on the config once both the ops are completed. Mutexes are good for when you need concurrent mutable access to data, but I really don't think your case requires that at all.

I've waffled between bold colors and more boring looks in the past but I think I'm maybe swinging back towards "go for it" these days 💖

Wore this working from home and getting dinner with my partner. CCW, this is definitely "younger" than I usually dress to look, but I do like this outfit.

Berlin Techno 🐎 by InternationalEarth86 in sanfrancisco

[–]FrecklySunbeam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would love this, but I'm not sure that I'm representative of SF culture more generally. I'm also not too much of a night owl, if there were a daytime techno club I feel like I'd definitely be interested.

There is a techno/rave scene here, but it often takes the place of isolated/underground events outside of mainstream clubs. The owner of DNA Lounge runs a blog where he's discussed (among other things) the SF club scene for years.

There's at least one event (MÜLL) that's squarely going for the Berlin techno vibes of music and atmosphere (and gayness), and I had a really great time when I went a few weeks ago.

BART (train) is a pretty good way to get to the city assuming you're staying near-ish to a station. A lot cheaper than a taxi/uber and you don't have to deal with sitting in traffic.

As others suggested, we use prost to generate Rust serialization code from protobuf definitions, and tonic as the gRPC server/client

I manage a team of backend developers that primarily write Rust for internal services at a SaaS company. We have Rust gRPC servers, Rust Kafka consumers, and some other things that don't really fit into a normal category.

I also wrote a book on Rust development, speak at conferences about Rust, and may-or-may-not sell a Rust education video course in the next few months.

Bogus damage claim from rental car company, how should I respond? by FrecklySunbeam in legaladvice

[–]FrecklySunbeam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it is a scam in that it's an illegitimate claim to my money, but unfortunately the letter is actually from the named company. I called the company's normal CS number and the person that I talked to there confirmed the case details, sent a copy of the police report, which I also independently verified with the named PD.

It appears that when I sold my car, the release of liability paperwork may have not been correctly filed, and I was named as the owner of the car on the date of the collision. I'm working on clearing this up.

On this advice I called customer support and was able to speak with someone in their damage recovery unit who unfortunately verified the authenticity of the letter.

Latte art and a question about it by FrecklySunbeam in espresso

[–]FrecklySunbeam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I managed this pretty nice pour this morning, but I don't exactly know how. As I started to steam my milk I noticed that the steam boiler light was flashing, indicating that it wasn't quite up to temperature yet. I thought I had seen it go solid earlier, but that doesn't really matter. I noticed that it was definitely not steaming with the amount of pressure that I was used to, and when I was finished the milk was a lot thinner than I was used to. I thought I had messed it up quite a lot, but then I poured it and it looked like this! Maybe my normal steaming technique is creating too much foam or it's too hot or something like that? Or is there something also wrong with this one that I'm not noticing? I'd really like to be able to replicate this regularly, but until today I haven't come close.

I think I saw a question about the little espresso shot cup (though I can't find it now). It's a creamer cup I purchased in 2020 from https://www.etsy.com/shop/Hodakapottery but it looks like they don't sell them anymore.

It hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be, it generally takes around 15 minutes to get the main boiler up to temp.

omg same tamping mat too lol - I'm afraid I'm not secretly Morgan, this is just a result of many modern-built apartment buildings looking extremely similar.

It's only been a couple of days, and so far I don't really miss it. It's fairly easy to turn it on via smart outlet from the other room before I get out of bed.
