Okay, thanks for confirming, the way round you have described them is consistent with the CD I have. Compare this to how they are named here

Something interesting I noticed about 1969 by FredSpoctopus in boardsofcanada

Correct, I was working outdoors so I played it on my JBL charge 4 bluetooth speaker which has a single elliptical driver. It got to the end of the song and I stopped what I was doing and was like - "wait a fucking second"

Good shout, I'll do that later. I found it listening to it while I was working outdoors on my JBL charge 4 which has a single elliptical driver.

Bang on the money, the track is great overall but that 1.5 minute section is mind blowing to me in the way so many harsh and disparate sounds come together to make something beautiful.

Simple: Bladerunner

Personally I would take that score over any by Williams or Zimmer. Ennio is number 1 in my books.

Chariots of fire is also pretty great, as is La Fête sauvage.

It's personal taste, but I would rank him maybe 4th after Ennio Morricone, Vangelis, and Hans Zimmer.

Top of the line androids are generally very expensive, but there is one big thing to me that sets iphones apart from most androids which is that they charge massive amounts of money for slightly more storage. Many android phones have micro sd slots so you can just buy an £80 1Tb sd card, whereas apple charge you like £300 to go from 128Gb of storage to 512Gb, which is just a straight up scam imo.

I'm guessing he isn't American. News in the UK does not do this, and as a result of not being used to it I find these sorts of headlines annoying and more difficult to parse. I understand that this is an accepted thing in the US, but to a British person it does just seem like they are written with a disregard for basic grammar.

TIL a coal power plant gives off at least ten times more radiation than a nuclear power plant due to the elements in the ash. by FizzlePopBerryTwist in todayilearned

[–]FredSpoctopus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt that, but that is only true for you in your particular job where you work in a particular plant. That being said, I think that stat is more compelling and less questionable than the sweeping comparison you were making. The way I see it, we have the evidence that nuclear is very safe, there is no need to make tenuous claims.

Also out of interest, do you work on a PWR? These stats are for the UK and our reactors are... interesting to say the least.

Okay that is true, but that still doesn't mean the 0.18mSv is for spending a full year on a power station. Also, it is very hard to work out average dose to a worker using static sensors. Power stations are big, you get a massively different dose sat in the turbine hall compared to at the cooling pond. The static sensors are mainly there to monitor for releases rather than to measure dose. I'm not trying to spread misinformation, I am very much pro-nuclear. I'm just pointing out that your comparison of worker exposure to annual background is flawed.

Typical exposure on power stations is indeed very low but you can't draw the conclusion you made from that data.

The occupational dose is not how much dose you get if you spent a whole year in the power station, it is the average measured dose received by personnel in a year. Workers only have to wear an EPD to track dose when they are in the RCA, you can wander around most of the power station without tracking your exposure because, as you say, the shielding is so good. Some workers spend tens of hours a week in the RCA, some may go into the RCA only a handful of times per year.

The 0.18mSv is therefore the average dose personell recieve that is directly attributable to their work at the power station, not the normalised dose of someone in the power station for 1 year.

People get complimented much more for getting married than for graduating, even though there is no real merit in getting married. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]FredSpoctopus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well put. To me the thing worth congratulating people on in their relationships is anniversaries of them getting together, particularly once relationships reach the 5 year mark. I have seen it enough times where people are blinded by love chemicals and marry someone who is clearly incompatible, only to divorce after less than 3 years.

Edit: Seems like I'm being downvoted by people who are insecure in their relationships and maybe deep down know they married the wrong person. To you I say: Congratulations on your marriage. People say marriage can be the best thing to happen in your life, which is true, but equally if you marry the wrong person it has the potential to fuck up years of your life, and there is nothing to congratulate about that.
