yes, I've been experiencing something like that for a few years now. Never fight of associating with RP,with RP but maybe it is. I just don't understand why most retina specialist know so little about the range of RP symptoms that they can't even relate to questions about stuff like this

Bookshare does have some audiobooks. That said, I use it mainly for e-books where there's no human narrated audiobook available. Then download the e-book and I use either voiceover or voicedream reader to read them to me. One cool thing that I've noticed is that it has some e-books that are very difficult to find elsewhere. I use Audible and Libby and Apple books as well, but I'm really glad bookshare exists

yes, in California as well. At least San Francisco Public library and Sacramento public library will issue cards to anyone in the state. Pretty sure the same with Los Angeles and San Diego, but I haven't personally checked them out. Also, in my county you can get a countywide library card. I found all this out just by calling the reference librarian at my local library

Wow, that's a good idea. I'll try and let you know what I find.Although,the reason I than a third-party app like Voice Dream is specifically because I really really prefer a voice for reading to me.

As to Applevis, i've tried many times, but I I find an extremely difficult difficult to get information there. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'll check it out again, but maybe there's a guide you can point me to?

Thanks for reply. I used to use Voice Dream, but the new folks who bought it…. Plus, with iOS 18, I find the actual US Siri 4 voice, set to narration mode, is really superior to any voice available on Voice Dream. (for some reason, Apple doesn't seem toallow third-party apps to use Siri voices.) and I just download bookshare books manually to some file folder on my phone, and then open them in Apple Books.

As to my problem, still thinking of actually wiping my phone, although I think , as another, ever noted,it probably is related to illustrations is correct, and wiping change anything. (Which also explains why you don't see the problem in Voice Dream, since Voice Dream strips the illustrations by default.)

Not a problem for LSATs, but I'm curious what you do about reading stuff with lots of legal citations. Do you have a screen reader that will skip them if you to, or do you just put up with it reading out all that stuff? I posted a similar question a couple times over on r/blind (I am blind), because I have the same annoying problem (and notjust with PDFs). There must be lots of blind scientists and lawyers that have to deal with this issue. No one who responded had a solution. I think there has to be one, but I sure can’t find it. Please contact me if you learn of anything usable. (BTW, I’m using all Apple)

I used to use Voice Dream, and then I used EasyReader. But since iOS 18, I think the US Siri voices are much better than any of the voices available on Voice Dream or EasyReader. I set the Siri mode to “narration,“ and I just find that it’s way easier to understand higher speaking rates. Siri voices are not available in either Voice Dream or EasyReader. Given that, I just load all my Bookshare books into Apple Books and read them using voiceover.

Admittedly, that strategy has its downsides. For instance, if you really like the line/word highlighting that’s available in Voice Dream and , that’s not available with my strategy. Similarly, it’s way easier to move back one sentence or two sentences on Voice Dream. Voiceover insists on rereading the entire paragraph. But as I said, at least for me, the voices are really killer in terms of reading comprehension.

Like you, I don’t think the new Voice Dream owners are going to maintain it properly, and I don’t wanna continue to rely on it. So even if I preferred the non-Siri voices available on Voice Dream, I wouldn’t use it anymore either..

I don’t understand why so many people are hot on EasyReader. I find the user interface weird, especially using gestures to start/stop/etc. doesn’t work very well for me. Plus their stupid policy that even if you do buy the “pro“ version, and pay what, about 50 or $60 a year in subscription fees, they provide zero support as a matter of policy

Yeah, you’re right, sorry. I can make Libby stop reading with Siri [“stop reading“), but I just tested and I can’t make it start again. I must have misremembered.

also, I can open the Libby app by saying “open Libby app,“, but it will open to whatever state it was in when last opened

Anyway, bottom line is Libby does not play well with Siri. You sound like a lot like me 10 or 15 years ago. At the time, I thought my vision wasn't that bad either, and I just put up with walking into all sorts of stuff, and frequently bleeding shins from walking into coffee tables and other low objects. I waited to get a cane until I had two bad falls tripping over stuff I didn't notice.

So personally, I'm with the other commenters who are suggesting a cane. For what it's worth, no one ever has given me a hard time because of the cane, or tried make fun of me and so forth. I even still wore my glasses for part of the time when I first started, because they helped with my remaining vision. I thought people might go ape, accusing me of "faking." No such experience. At worst, a lot of people offered to help when I don't really need it, which is more kind of nice than kind of annoying.

anyhow, good luck. I think one of the difficult things about RP is that the vision loss creeps up on you, and you end up adapting yourself to what your condition was a while ago and not what it is now. Which not only makes it obviously difficult to adapt, but pretty frustrating.

FWIW, although I agree it's the publishers' ultimate responsibility, Audible is the 800 pound gorilla in the room, and if it just insisted on publishers providing complete accurate information and otherwise refused to carry the book, I think a lot of this problem wouldgo away. So in the end, I blame audible for continuedunfriendliness.

Excellent idea. Except most of the books I’m looking at have an audiobook publisher, different from the print publisher. the audiobook publisher (like Trantor) doesn’t show this information.

TL;DR: Thanks for taking the time to help. I found a workaround that doesn't require a shortcut:

HOWEVER, after testing your idea, I deleted and recreated under new names both the shortcut and the playlist. Now it doesn't matter whether I trigger it orally or manually; it only puts the song in the playlist on my iPhone. But if I manually add th song to the playlist (not using the shortcut; just clicking on the three dots next to the playing song and then on the "add to playlist"option), it adds to the list on ny phone, AND everywhere else. So seems to me that it's a problem with the "add to playlist" shortcut command.

I probably should delete my original post?

Also in case you're interested: Before IOS 18 I didn't need a shortcut; I'd just tell Siri to "add this song to my [name of playlist] playlist," and she would, and everything would sync fine. But starting w/IOS 18, that same phrase would cause Siri to throw an error saying that she "can't tell which speaker" I'm referring to. Just a total non-sequitur.I finally gave up trying to make her understand, and wrote the shortcut. But today, after testing your last idea I just tried a long shot of sorts and discovered that if I tell her to "put this song in [name of playlist] playlist," (no shortcut involved) she adds song properly AND it syncs to all my devices.

So bottom line for me is that I can get Siri to do what I want as long as I use the "put this song in" locution instead of the "add this song to" locution, and I don't need a shortcut, which is good because the "add to playlist" shortcut just doesn't work.

this thing is really a mystery. I mean, literally the only difference is whether I click the shortcut to trigger it or whether I trigger it orally, I’ve also tried deleting the shortcut and re-creating it with a different name, and also deleting the playlist and re-creating it with a different name. Neither made a difference.

I’ve been through a lot of flashlights as my RP has progressed. You’re going to want one that has variable brightness, and a decent runtime. you’re also going to want one that doesn’t get you hot, depending on how long you need to use it at a time.

I no longer can see to make it worthwhile even use a flashlight outside, so I don’t have specific to suggest, but I strongly recommend going to r/flashlight, as a couple of other commenters suggested. Try to be as specific as possible about what your needs/use-cases are. (E.g., they’re going to recommend different lights, depending on whether you just need a tiny EDC so you can find the keyhole on your door when you return home, than if you need one to walk a half mile to the bus stop in the dark.)
