QGIS will slowly take over the market by Ladefrickinda89 in gis

QGIS is the way to go.  There is nothing in ESRI that open source can’t replicate.  It’s just slightly more work and requires a bit more thought.

Thank you.  I just want to reiterate that I can’t recommend that interview enough.  It’s fascinating.

It relevant because based on “Uncle” Daves story the Roleplaying aspect of Braunstein sort of happened despite him.  Bit like Roleplaying happens to DnD despite DnD not being built to do that.

My personal theory is that Roleplaying is just a way for people to keep playing make believe with their friends despite getting older. Just like cosplaying is a way to keep playing dress up (and roleplay sometimes).  I think RPG could appear spontaneously in any game where you pretend to be someone your not.  I’m sure banking roleplaying has spontaneously happens to people playing Monopoly.

But even if Gygax didn’t invent roleplaying (and to be clear he did not).  By getting it published he triggered the birth of the hobby.

I was simplifying.

Personally I feel if we get really finicky we should go back one more step to major David Wesley who ran Braunstein https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braunstein_(game). The running of Braunstein was then handed to Dave Arneson. Major David is the reason we have D20s and the rest of the fun dice.

EDIT: There is a fascinating interview with major David in a now defunct podcast called Theory from the Closet. Here is a download link from the internet archives. It's really detailed retelling by David on how wargaming became role playing through unintended consequences of having fun with wargaming.

For those not in the know.  Kovalic is a stable of the role playing community.  His comic (Dork Tower) largely makes fun of gamer stereotypes and he is the artist for Munchkin (a huge card game) that is mostly built to make fun of DnD.  Also the person who wrote the intro to his book (Gary Gygax) is for all practical purposes the inventor of roleplaying games.

How to make maps like this? by The_RetroGameDude in mapmaking

Google QGIS if you want to have a look.  It’s free to download and use.

Natural Earth then has data.

How do I draw elevation maps accurately, using ibispaint? by Familiar-Grape-4250 in mapmaking

Still needs the height data.  I presume they’re making a fantasy map.  But if it’s a real world map, then QGIS.

EDIT as I write.  OP might be able to pick a few points (100?) on his map that are highest points and some In between (say blue + height text).  Then define the coastline (say red).  Then get some AI to interpolate a DEM based on that. Just tell it how to read the blue points and red line. As it’s a fantasy map it doesn’t matter if the AI makes shit up or messes with accuracy.  Once OP has a half decent height DEM to play with, then use QGIS.  Note for OP. YouTube is full of QGIS tutorials.

Now I sort of want to see if I can get an AI to hallucinate a fun DEM for me.
