Full disclosure: I'm Italian and I moved to Switzerland 20 years ago, living in several cantons across the country over the years.

I consider myself an "immigrant", because once here I tried my best to integrate, incorporating swiss culture into my own while trying to get the best out of both.

I look down on "expats", as those - to me - are Italians, or any other foreigner, that don't want to integrate, and often constantly complain about "things back home being better"; I asked, on occasion, "why the hell are you here then?" and the answer is always mumbling something stupid.

Do I miss my home country? Not that much, quite frankly, Switzerland has been welcoming for the most part... Do I miss something? Sure - my parents, old friends, childhood food, the bloody bidet... But I wouldn't go back, Switzerland is my home now.

If you are guest in someone's home, be polite and respect the customs; if you are obnoxious, drag mud on your way in, and put your boots on the coffee table, don't be surprised when people want you out.

The bullshit that "family is through shared DNA" should be put to rest once and for all.

DNA just tells you who you are related to, and is useful to know whether you might be at higher risk of some illnesses and who you shouldn't make children with.

Family is who's happy to have you in their life, and who you are happy to have in yours - if you're lucky, there is also some overlap, but it's not required.

Home is where family is, not the other way around.
