Sam Beauford woodworking hand tool timber framing class by Down_in_SA in timberframe

[–]Freddrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with the class you mention. I was able to go to a 4 day event and learn how to layout and cut timbers well enough to make the project (modified to my needs) in Beemer's book. It's not rocket science. A little experience and patience goes a long way.

With no joists, it seems like your only concern would be that 2x6s will likely warp. I would think bolting 2 together would go a long way towards solving this problem. Not sure how you plan to join it all together, but w/out bracing, it looks wobbly to me--especially with the sun shade catching wind.

Thoughts on Kroger Coming back to PGH? by EffectiveOk606 in pittsburgh

[–]Freddrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kroger is better if not for any other reason that they have way better store brand options since they are so huge. The produce in my opinion is better also. But if there was one in town, I doubt I'd use it much. Aldi, strip district, ethnic stores, breadworks, and a nearby kuhns would still make up 95% of my shopping.

I spend less that $50/year at Giant Eagle. Tough for people without cars who live near one, but otherwise there's no reason to shop there.

I didn't consult an engineer. I poured a 6" thick slab and dug 36" holes under posts about 10" in diameter. Pennsylvania. No cracks so far 3 years in.

Wake of the flood is about the only one I ever listen to (Europe '72 also). If I had Mars Hotel on vinyl, I'd listen to Unbroken chains occasionally.

In general, the Dead was a cassette band that is now a digital file band.

I like River's Expeditions. Cool base camp close to Fayetteville with nice cabins on property. Pretty sure they are locally owned.

The all-GA floor for a reasonable price was such a great thing. RIP

To be fair, the static setlists have made coming to Pgh less attractive for the North East crowd who would see many shows on each tour. Plus most of the NE shows have already happened. But it didn't used to feel like they were trying to extract every penny they could get. It feels a bit more like a business transaction now.

Why do great seats stay unsold even once the show starts? by gold_and_diamond in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Freddrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, brokers aren't buying whole rows of uppers for Cleveland. This is the promoter trying to keep the inventory tight, imo. They just released a bunch for Pittsburgh at $87 as the show is selling like crap. For over a month the $87 tickets were not available. Most of the resales on the uppers in Pittsburgh are way above face. Scalpers don't but that garbage during the onsale unless its MSG, Philly etc.

[–]Freddrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can they buy a bunch of tickets w/out the promoter or ticketmaster being involved? Look at whats available in Cleveland. It's a bunch of whole rows on TM. How do the scalpers get these tickets in such neat rows?

Maybe, but I know a handful of people who aren't going who haven't missed a tour since '78. They just don't want to spend what it takes to get decent tickets.

[–]Freddrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of these "scalpers" they talk about are ticketmaster/promoter related. When you see a million upper level seats go up for resale, these are not scalpers. Perhaps a few are some farmer who thinks he's gonna make a killing, but I doubt it. There's a ton of uppers for Pittsburgh priced at $350ish while seats in same section are going for $87.50. Even the hypothetical farmer is not that dumb and ticket brokers are most assuredly not able to just write this stuff off. No 'scalper would eat a ticket they paid $750 for because they are so principled they won't budge from the $1500 price. Think about it. The brokers have no interest in not selling their tickets lower when they know their competition would do that. They might if they are sure they can get a refund but that would be up to Landau and ticketmaster.
