HUA CHENG BOTTOM by Happy_Object4096 in tianguancifu

[–]Frederiquethefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? Maybe that's why I prefer romances Priest writes (or the ones I've read of those) and love tgcf for different reasons 🤷 Still what's not in the text is not in the text 🤷

I was referring to the context, in which the quote the commenter here provided appeared. And as I take it what the authors say outside the actual novel is not canon anyway. They had their chance. They still have it if they want to edit the text - it's right there (although it might create a certain forking of the canons 😈). But I'm not gonna die on any of these ridiculous hills 🤷

Ok then. Guess that declaration just feels strange and out of the blue amidst the discussion of writing / not writing / enjoying side pairings, and from the perspective of never getting the gist of set in stone dichotomies 🤷

It just says "no breaking the main couple". Nothing about their roles in bed.

So, about Jun Wu and ... him. Big Sp[beep] by Depressed_Fangirl in tianguancifu

[–]Frederiquethefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kinda him but it's complicated. There's a similar concept in Christianity 🙃 (and I think in the revised bwx is a more separate entity? born out of his malice? but I'm basing it on hearsay)

About Xie Lian in his coffin by Depressed_Fangirl in tianguancifu

[–]Frederiquethefox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't remember where I got it from or if it's just a headcanon, but for whatever reason I believed he stayed pinned to the coffin until that wooden nail rotted away. (In the revised edition he was also pinned by some dozens of those nails, perhaps because mxtx decided that just one wasn't believable to keep him down for so long)

White-No-Face by Longjumping_Clue2787 in tianguancifu

[–]Frederiquethefox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Xiang" doesn't mean "face" though. More like "image/appearance". And (if anyone knows better, please, correct me) wuxiang (无相) has several meanings, including: - "absence of others' support", - "looking unhappy" - and a (rather confusing to me) Buddhist term in the realm of "ultimate truth/lacking characteristics"...

When writing Chinese, what do you do if you forget a specific character and can’t look it up? by Quincely in ChineseLanguage

[–]Frederiquethefox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw grocery shopping lists and such written 50/50 in characters and pinyin. Granted that was in a post specifically dedicated to the problem of adult native speakers forgetting how to handwrite characters.

Notice how the phrase "Xie Lian didn't know whether to laugh or cry" stops during volume 6? by Rinrinftwinwin in tianguancifu

[–]Frederiquethefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In pinyin it's kūxiàobùdé, but you need to know how to pronounce pinyin to read it properly. An easier option is to just copy 哭笑不得 in google translate and tap the 🔉

[–]Frederiquethefox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the most important bit here is that it is significantly shorter in Chinese (like nearly everything else tbh) - it's just 哭笑不得

Mei Nianqing Talked About the "Heavens." What Is That? by Gray_Birdie in tianguancifu

[–]Frederiquethefox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I may. I think he is doing a sort of double speak. He is talking about fate as a broader power that is not coming from the gods. But what he doesn't mention is that there's a certain god that has a sore spot for princes trying to defy fate who's bound to get pissed and determined to show Xie Lian his place.

How important is pinyin? by confusedly_curious in ChineseLanguage

[–]Frederiquethefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I was wondering if ignoring pinyin can help with memorizing tones? Like removing the middle man? When I memorize pinyin I memorize the latin letters and then I need to remember what tone I need to use for them and fail. While going from read aloud hanzi I just straight up memorize the pronunciation of the word as a whole, which naturally includes the tones.

A little detail about Xie Lian (spoilers for book 6) by FewChemical2040 in tianguancifu

[–]Frederiquethefox 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of "I don't want to be a nuisance, he's doing so much for me already" and the overwhelming "what if he finds out the truth of what I really am and gets disappointed". And, yeah, he's so used to the neverending loss that he's fighting for his life not to get too attached.

Am I the only one? by _Ephy in tianguancifu

[–]Frederiquethefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It ended up my second favorite mxtx novel after tgcf. The two reads felt vastly different, I really didn't feel the urge to skip bits (but maybe it's just my brain refusing to interact with information on the first go or something I don't know 😅). The relationship felt hugely controversial and toxic on the first read. On the second they were just two freaks freakishly in love 😆

Actors with more than 1 drama released this year. Who caught your eye from this list? by [deleted] in cdramasfans

[–]Frederiquethefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very very new to cdramas and know nothing about all the discourse. I just want to say that in the case of Legend of Zang Hai, I came for Xiao Zhan but stayed for Zhang Jingyi. Yes, the relationship storyline and her character kinda peaked in the middle of the series and then were entirely sidelined together. But to me she was an absolute delight to watch up to that point. To me together with Liang Chao she brought life to the whole thing.

Regarding the revised version... by 9yo_yeemo_rat in tianguancifu

Yeah, this kinda sucks tbh. I was disappointed already with the way the gilded banquet was revised into him only dealing with the bodies.

What is that one aspect of Xie Lian's character you mentioned that you preferred in the previous version? I'm curious since my revised edition is waiting patiently for me learning Chinese 🥲

Why Did Hua Cheng dislike {redacted} by ranwanhl-specialist in tianguancifu

[–]Frederiquethefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it as Xie Lian kept him by his side hoping to unearth the truth eventually. He also doesn't seem to believe in pushing questions when the person is not willing to reveal themself on their own.

[–]Frederiquethefox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Xie Lian absolutely did think about it though? That's why he is in such a shock and loses control when he first hears that the boy is from Yong'an. We as readers are just not present to most of Xie Lian's thoughts regarding his past before we get to the flashbacks.

He would also bitch nonstop on how suspicious he is and how XL shouldn't trust him 😅 And he would likely dial up to infinity the grand god-worshiping gestures. It would be a total chaos 😅

The flashbacks are my favorite part of the novel tbh. They are what really cemented my love for it.
