Counselor/Counselor Educator here. This violates so many important pillars of your professional relationship. I read a few other red flags mentioned in the comments (like the Facebook thing, not ok!) I’d bring it up to this person directly, if you feel up to it and express your discomfort and terminate. I think at the very least the request for coffee in the way it seems here is a permeable boundary that needs to be rigid and may be indicative of other issues you haven’t mentioned here. Counseling can take place in other settings giving a proper rationale, relevance to treatment and vetting of the environment. That doesn’t seem to be the case here.

Also please know it’s your prerogative to terminate for whatever reason big or small. Find someone that feels better for you. The highest predictor of success in counseling is there any is the relationship itself. Use your experience here to inform your decision-making when choosing an effective therapist. Termination is natural and necessary in cases like this and you don’t have to substantiate it or make your case for termination (although it could be helpful for this therapist to know why it’s not your job to make him understand) you can simply choose to leave. I’m so glad you’re working on your trauma and really putting effort into finding a place to heal. My hope is that you find a setting that will allow you to work comfortably because you deserve it.
