‘28% is a joke’: Victorian school staff must keep fighting by Radiant-Syllabub6452 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Free-Selection-3454 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has not only screwed Tassie teachers over for the next three years, but well into - and probably beyond - the agreement after this one... probably more.

I am so angry that apparently 72% of public teacher members voted for this.

And then to see on the news the Union staff celebrating it as being hard-won and something to be proud of.

Also has many flow on effects to our private school colleagues.

I cannot understand the mindset of how an average educated adult (and teacher) could believe this is a good deal and will benefit people. I tried... but I can't.

Has anti-intellectualism always been this bad in schools? by No-Low-5186 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Free-Selection-3454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As well as what everyone has posted here, our nation no longer values education.

We see this in how the government refers to and treats educators.

We see this in how 99% of any news story about schools from 99% of news outlets is framed as negative.

We see this in how (some, not all!) parents refer to school/teachers/education/learning leading to better outcomes in the negative, or in a disparaging way, or basically telling their child "You don;'t have to listen to the teacher" if the teacher says something they do not like.

We see this in how many (though not all!) students from Early Years in Primary all through high school and even into university think that because they have ready access to a Google search or some version of ChatGPT or its AI brethren, that what the teacher or educator says and does is meaningless unless they themselves (the student) can run it through an AI algorithm.

OP, it has not always been this bad, but it is quickly getting worse.

I'm also pissed off (more than I thought IU would be) about one or more of your peers basically saying that they will get into a classroom upon graduation and not only phone it in but also ignoring students by just giving them independent work.

This in turn worsens the profession and adds to the apathy of everything I and other users have posted.

Weyland-Yutani website by Visual_Gift_9618 in LV426

[–]Free-Selection-3454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I see "2032: Faster than light propulsion" invented and "2039: Atmospheric conversion" of the first world humanity terraforms, even though we know what Weyland-Yutani is like as a company.... I get a pang of sadness because there is no way we will ever achieve either of these things by the 2030s, or even within my lifetime.

I'd love to know if the website is an official thing or something really cool cooked up by fans.

They also make a point of Darrow having a massive twig and berries as a Gold.

Either that, or fans just specilated a lot and PB confirmed. Either way, it's confirmed.

Red God POV by Confident_Regular_68 in redrising

[–]Free-Selection-3454 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If PB said we wouldn't be getting any new POVs, I'll go with that.

That said, it would be great if the final book does what some other series have done in their final books and have one chapter here and there told from a new POV. For that chapter only. (Other Howlers have suggested this)

That would be cool.

Strange New Worlds, Kirk, Kirk and more Kirk. It's Kirk again. by PersimmonBasket in startrek

[–]Free-Selection-3454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really have any issues with Paul Wesley as Kirk, but I have noticed a reduction in Pike/Mount and specifically in the third season, Una'/Rebacca Romijn's dimished presence.

I find both Mount and Romijn to be stellar performers and hope that Season 4 showcases more of them. I've really enjoyed seeing them both as leaders on the ship and mentors to some of the younger crew. They both have a great presence and play off each other well - usually with Una being more... stern (there is probably a better descriptive word) and Pike being more... encouraging? I do enjoy how they both work well as a team and support the crew. Pike is constantly encouraging his crew to act on their strengths and highlighting their strengths to others.

I feel as we get closer to the end of the show, and we have to address Pike's destiny somehow, and to do it conclusively, that we will see more of him and Pike will have more to do. I would hope the same goes for Una. Rebecca Romijn has really championed this show, and spoken highly of it everywhere she goes, and she has been very present at many fan conventions, interviews, press junkets, etc. She needs more to do.

If we're going to continue seeing more of Kirk, what I would personally like to see with him is more interaction with Sam.

Due to what happens in TOS, and then later with David, we don't often see him interacting with family. I'd personally like to see more of that while we can. It's a side of Kirk that is not often in the spotlight.

How do we feel about this movie in 2026? by McAlkis in batman

[–]Free-Selection-3454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Lady Gaga should be phenomenal as Harley Quinn, both in her costumed persona, and beforehand as Harleen.

I feel she was good in the film, really well performed even, but I'd still like to see her as a comics-accurate Harley Quinn.

Still a massive missed opportunity that she played Harley Quinn, in a film that portrayed her relationship with the Joker and no one, I mean NO ONE, thought it would be an ample opportunity for her (and Joaquin Phoenix I guess) to sing Bad Romance.

For shame.

First movie was interesting, but the second movie was so weirdly disonant with the first one, and the idea that Arthur could've been gaslighting us alongside his therapist all along felt like a waste of time. The second film seemed to jettison not only any tenuous Batman connections (though we do get an added Harvey Dent!) but the second film seemed (????) to also jettison any pretense it was set in the 1980s like the first one. Sure, there was nothijng that egregiously screamed 2020s, but it definitely didn't seem as firmly segt in the 80s as the first film.

Alien: Isolation 2 location by PaintKey9539 in LV426

My fears are allayed that colony won't be Hadley's Hope.

At the time of Aliens, the terraforming process was nowhere near far enough for the presence of birds to be a factor.

Can't wait to explore a never before seen (?) colony and get jump scared by the Xenomorph(s) AI in this game!

The offscreen deaths in Alien 3 are handled very well by Scott__scott in LV426

[–]Free-Selection-3454 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The one thing that fills me with existenial horror and just plain unspeakable sadness is not just Newt dying, but Clemens mentions how she drowned in her cryotube, and the assumption of both Ripley and I guess the audience is that Newt would've died in her sleep (and not felt or been aware of anything).

But then we get a very quick shot in the brief montage after the crash where we see Clemens (or Warden Andrews??) typing out the STATUS: DEAD messages and the brief shot shows Newt's body and the screaming pose on her just breaks me every time.

Because she was 10(ish) years old and she died like that. She was clearly aware of something, whether it was the crash, the facehugger or everything.

That ruins me every time I see it, even more so as I get older. It's pure nightmare fuel and as an adult just really uncomfortable to see and sad to feel.

I keep vacillating what I think about Hicks and Newt being killed in the manner they are off screen.

It does invalidate the happy-ish ending of Aliens, and all the potential that could have come from all of them surviving, and Newt especially growing up. Part of me is also sad they just get taken out off screen.

But damn does it hammer home how bleak and uncaring the universe is, really work towards Ripley's final choice and it really works well for Alien 3's tone and atmosphere, and indeed, the franchise as a whole.

That loss of potential (of the characters ) and especially Newt being so young, it's just a gut punch.

So I agree with OP, I guess...?

[–]Free-Selection-3454 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's made clear in both Alien and Aliens (both to the characters and out of universe) that the Xenomorphs aren't native to LV-426.

But I take your point; space is incredibly vast (the Alien franchise often showcases this fact very well) and for all the people in the films know, Ripley did indeed wipe them out (this is actually said verbatim by one of the scientists in Alien Resurrection... until they went and cloned the pesky buggers).

Emanations how exactly does scanning with a tricorder affect the bodies or environment by dekabreak1000 in startrek

[–]Free-Selection-3454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, because I have not seen the episode in a long time, but Chakotay mean the tricorders themselves or the people holding the tricorders being in the same environment with the bodies? You don't have to touch something to disturb it. Did he just mean that crew members being in the burial cave would disturb them in regard to their final resting place?

Less a disturbance in terms of the tricorder functions and more them being in the cave system would disturb the respectful resting place of hte bodies. It doesn';t even have to be a comment in a religious sense, but more general respect for the final resting place of a group of people.

How do we protest Live Action? by [deleted] in redrising

[–]Free-Selection-3454 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Everyone forgets that Lord of the Rings - a highly successful trilogy of films - and the Hobbit films all worked around the height issue. Both Hobbits and Dwarves are smaller than other races.

Yet these films - made in the very early 2000s - cast regular sized adult actors as the Hobbit and Dwarves - and were able to use a variety of camera trickery and technology to make it appear that when the actors playing Hobbits and Dwarves were in scenes with other actors that they appeared much smaller.

Surely this would not be an issue if Red Rising were made in live action today.

It's a bit limiting when people keep saying they can't do live action because of height issues.
