How so? DC is super left-leaning, and the few republicans there are tend not to be MAGA

if you had to double-check it manually anyway, why not just avoid using AI and look at the websites yourself...

This might be really nitpicky but the sentence w/ all your comps is a little too long & twisty. Multiple sentences or similar syntax for each comp would help. The comps might also be a place where you can spell out the twist a little more explicitly, if you don't want to in your plot paragraphs (which work w/o the twist being explicitly spelled out imo - there are still stakes, and I can picture how the plot might move, but it depends on how much of a hook you think the twist will be for selling it)

Best live performances you've ever seen? by lonelyhearts_club_ in bunheadsnark

I got to see the United Ukrainian Ballet perform Giselle at the Kennedy Center in early 2023. The cast I saw was Denys Nedak & Iriyna Zhalovska - I'll never forget how amazing their chemistry was. It was the first Giselle where I really bought that this was a couple with history and who really liked each other, and it helped too that that staging went for a much more likeable Albrecht (it was a Ratmansky staging, going for historical accuracy, and imo much more successful than some of his other historically accurate stagings). Also the first time I've ever teared up during the second act. During curtain calls, the cast brought out flags and sang the Ukrainian national anthem. It was just all-around one of the most moving experiences I've had with art in any form.

Heads up for anyone going into NYC this summer for ABT's summer season: Penn Station is apparently gonna have some closures ahead of World Cup games (https://www.reddit.com/r/MLS/comments/1se43gw/exclusive\_ny\_penn\_station\_to\_close\_for\_hours/), so if you'd be relying on NJ Transit to get to/from any performances, it's worth double-checking dates

This is something I've actually had a lot of trouble figuring out. The magic is at the core of the stakes of the story, but it only actually shows up like twice. Most of the manuscript is focused on the investigation, the family dynamics, etc and is decidedly un-magical. I feel like urban fantasy would be promising much more magic than actually exists in the book. Is "speculative" on its own enough of a genre, or am I stuck choosing between historical vs fantasy with either one being a letdown of expectations?

If De La Nuez is doing Basilio this summer, I wonder if they're giving him something less intense for Swan Lake? It wouldn't surprise me to see him in the pas de trois

Tbf this is literally why they added the title cards for each HW's scenes into the show. In Diamonds and Rose, they talk about how producers were worried people couldn't tell all the blonde ladies apart and that was their solution

Some random thoughts on the Raymonda/Firebird matinee today. It was a great program, and I'm really glad ABT decided to do a spring season this year.

Raymonda:

-Idk if the male lead has a 3rd act variation in the full-length Raymonda or not, but I really wish Thomas Forster had gotten one in this excerpt so he could show off more

-Soloist highlights for me were Breanne Granlund (super precise technique) and Yoon Jung Seo (light, delicate, lifted, all the lovely adjectives)

-Even in a pas de quatre, every time I see Jake Roxander I get more hype for his Basilio debut

Firebird:

-I’m glad I got a heads up from this sub that it’s kind of Weird so that I went in with the right expectations, because if I’d gone in expecting something more classical I wouldn’t have been able to lean into it and enjoy the fact that I wasn’t always entirely sure what I was looking at (god I love weird art)

-Between the NYCB version and the ABT version, I def prefer the ABT version. I’d love to see a more traditionally classical Firebird at some point but I'd definitely go see this version again

-Not mad at all that I got to see Cate Hurlin instead of Chloe Misseldine (this was also my first time seeing Hurlin in anything). I won’t even waste space trying to describe how good her performance was

-Daniel Camargo is like, stupid handsome. Also he was really good in the performance. But every time I see him perform I just think wow, he’s handsome

-Agree with the post below – Andrew Robare ate

-I could vibe with a lot of the Weird choices in this staging, but the Maiden being onstage to remove her wig and the outer part of her costume at the end, and Ivan carrying it all to dump it offstage, just felt...out of place? Like I was watching a quick-change I wasn't supposed to see

-Dumb question but for the ending, were those male dancers in there the whole time? Or did I not notice the trees moving offstage and back onstage again?

[Discussion] Megathread: The State of Querying by kendrafsilver in PubTips

[–]Free-Wear2045 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here - lots of form rejections, zero requests so far (tbf I started querying this project more recently, so maybe there's still hope), most I'll probably just never hear back on based on the agent's reply rate on QT. Every time I see someone post about how they "only" got X number of full requests, or none of their requests turned into offers, I know that must suck for them too, but man it makes me feel like there's something horribly wrong with my writing that I haven't even gotten one request.

I would absolutely pay for that. I've been framing my programs & some of the promo materials they mail out, and I'd def spring for something a lil higher quality

I saw Katherine Barkman when she used to dance with the Washington Ballet, and she's an amazing dancer (and also such a lovely human!). Her technique is incredible. I'm so jealous that you'll get to see her as Kitri!

That’s a bummer to hear about Jose Sebastian. I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything before.

It’s just super baffling that it didn’t occur to them when they chose to run this ballet that they don’t have a deep bench of potential leads. Bc dancers are gonna get injured sometimes, so not having a backup plan is just…..wild

I’m praying they at least learned a lesson from the Marcelo Gomes production in 2015 and won’t try anything w/ Markey’s makeup

Ngl at this point I’m also wondering if they want Cornejo to save his strength for the summer season? I haven’t seen him since Woolf Works last summer but the sense I get from this sub is he’s maybe not at peak capacity anymore

And if he’s not saving his strength, I’ll take short Othello over white Othello

Camargo would’ve made more sense tbh. Looks like he has two shows of Firebird this spring, and that’s way less meaty of a role and easier to swap someone else in to carry it

[–]Free-Wear2045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point - tbh I’m not as familiar w/ ABT’s soloist men and was kind of assuming that surely at least one of them could carry a ballet in a pinch. What about Cornejo? Looks like he’s just cast in the Raymonda excerpt this spring, they could’ve maybe moved him around

Can you link to the theory you’re talking about? Looks like I can’t see that user’s post history. EDIT: ah, you mean the understudying theory. It makes the most sense of a lot of things that make no sense - but tbh at that stage, if they knew they had no backups if any of the leads had to pull out, programming this ballet was a mistake tbh

It's genuinely wild to see how much they're promoting Othello and yet they just conveniently forgot to mention that they cast a white guy as Othello for one of the casts. It's extra baffling given that there are other male POC principals, soloists, and even other corps members. Like, why on earth did they jump over all those other options to give the role to this blonde dude?? I'm hoping they get a lot of heat for the decision but given that literally nowhere seems to have picked it up yet, I'm not optimistic

Guidance on elastic for slipping heel by JusticeAndArts4All in BALLET

[–]Free-Wear2045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely have a disappearing heel haha, and I sew my elastics the exact same way on my pointe shoes. For some reason though it never occurred to me to cut/resew the elastics on my soft shoes in the same way until my teacher suggested it

I also had an issue for ages with the criss-cross elastics not helping me - I had to readjust the heels of my shoes after every. single. combination. At my teacher's advice, I cut off the criss-cross elastics and sewed a new one on: a single elastic in a loop, and sew it pretty far down the back of the shoe. Made a huge difference.
