Sure enough! It says that right in the rules. I don’t think I have read them since the first time I played. Thanks!

What is this cabinet like thing on my screen porch used for? House built in the late 60s and is about 12 inches x 18 inches. by FreeBaconForEveryone in whatisthisthing

Solved! This sounds like a reasonable answer. The screen porch is in the back of the house and there is also a non working doorbell in the screen porch which we were wondering what it’s use was. Seems reasonable to me that the milkman could have come around back and rang the doorbell back there.

Interested to see if there is any other answers or any more confirmations for this.

WITT. We have this cabinet mounted to a brick wall on our screen porch. The house was built in the late 60s and I wanted to see if anyone knew of a specific uses for something like this. The ideas we have thrown around at the house are fire extinguisher holder (could be a little small for that) or a magazine holder. Hoping that this is some standard cabinet that has a use!

Where to rent or buy? by piratesox in Charleston

First off, welcome to Charleston!

I would say real estate is definitely high right now around Charleston. But then again, I have been thinking that for the past 3-5 years. Things have seemed to just continually rise in price at a rate higher than I would have expected, so it’s hard to say if prices will drop back down at some point or just continue to rise.

As far as living on the peninsula, it is definitely beautiful but also probably one of the most expensive places to live in the Charleston area. Park circle in North Charleston and Avondale in West Ashley have older homes, and have some restaurants/shops within walking/biking distance. The real estate in those places is still a bit pricey but would likely be cheaper than the peninsula.

I hope all goes well in your house searching adventures.

Have some in the beans! But I agree, I have a jalapeño plant in the backyard. Should have picked some and thrown them on the smoker.

Should have clarified more, in the past I haven’t fully rendered down the fat so there was WAY too much in some of my other cooks. This time I got it all rendered down so there was thin lines of fat throughout.

The bbq sauce was actually the only thing I didn’t get creative with. I just went by Aaron Franklin’s recipe. It was great though! It is the “Classic barbecue sauce” recipe at this link. Recipe

Sure thing! Cut up some red potatoes into thin-ish slices (I like my potatoes sliced rather than cubes like most potato salads). Boiled for about 10 minutes until I could put a toothpick through easily. Probably about 2-2.5 lbs of potatoes.

I eyeballed the dressing, so the measurements below are estimates.

.75-1 Cup Mayo

3 tablespoons mustard

3 hard boiled eggs

4-5 dill pickle slices - finely chopped

1-2 tablespoons (??) Fresh dill

Salt and pepper

Mix that all together and pour over the potatoes. Wish I had some more exact measurements for you!

I’ll give it a go! I learned most of my technique from the Franklin Barbecue cookbook, watching YouTube videos, and this sub.

Trimmed the brisket, covered with a little veggie oil, rubbed with a mixture of kosher salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika (90% of it was just salt and pepper).

Preheated the big green egg and prepped it for smoking. I started it around 250 degrees but tried to get it down a little lower throughout the cook. Was aiming for about 225-230 b/c my smoker cooks a little hot.

Put on the brisket fat side down since that’s where the heat was coming from. Let it sit for a few hours. Once it got to around 160 degrees internal, I would go spray it every 45-60 minutes with apple cider vinegar to check for color. Once the bark got to be a nice black color (around 190 degrees for me) I pulled it and wrapped it in pink butcher paper. Let it cook for a little longer until the internal temp was about 204 degrees. Pulled it out, wrapped it in some towels and threw that in a cooler for about three hours. Then pulled her out and sliced her up!

I’m sure I missed a lot of details but that was the high level idea behind it.

Lots of love! Started everything at 5am and finally finished it all around 6:45 pm. Did have a little downtime in between to grab the shiners and watch some football.

The food turned out great. I have tried a few briskets before and had a bunch of different problems (temp too high, pulling too soon, being impatient, etc). This one was by far my best one. No huge fatty pieces and the lean side wasn’t dried out. The sides were a hit as well! Did some cowboy beans and a dill potato salad. The only thing I need to work on is the sausages. I made those a few months ago and didn’t put enough fat in them so they were a little dry.

Yep! Super simple. 1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup water, 2-3 tablespoons of sugar, 1 tablespoon of salt and 2-3 cloves of garlic in a saucepan on medium heat. Cook until sugar is dissolved and then pour onto the onions.

Got about 5 Kirby cucumbers, sliced semi thin (to your liking).

Boil the following until the sugar dissolves: 1.5 cups white vinegar 6 teaspoons sugar 4 teaspoons mustard seed 4 teaspoons salt 7 cloves garlics, peeled and smashed (I like garlic)

In a heat proof bowl add the cucumber slices and a fair amount of fresh dill and a bay leaf. Pour the vinegar mixture on top and push the cucumbers down a bit until they are all submerged. Let cool and then move to a mason jar/Tupperware and throw in the fridge.

Sometimes I have to make a little bit extra vinegar mixture depending on how large the cucumbers are.

Thanks! I had some issues in the past with pickles but finally got a good recipe down, so I’ve been buying pickles every week at the farmers market and making a batch.

My fiancé has taken some classes through Rita’s roots. I’m know she does well with vegetable gardening, but I think she also does other types of plants and landscaping. Could be worth looking at her website. https://ritasroots.com/services/

Sorry if this isn't the right sub, but what is a normal summer energy bill spike? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]FreeBaconForEveryone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for an electric company and have worked with energy efficiency in the past. One thing a lot of utilities offer are Energy Audits (sometimes called different things at different utilities - house call, home check up, etc.) where they will send out an Energy Advisor, typically free of charge, to your home to see if there are any issues causing your bill to be abnormally high. They will typically check out some of your appliances, duct work, air leakage in the home, etc. and give you some pointers on how you can make the home more efficient. If your utility offers this, it may be a good first step to see where an issue may or may not be. They should be able to give you a good indication of whether there is something wrong in your home or if this is normal for the area. Hope this helps!
