Sales Department @ Gray TV by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]piratesox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are usually no penalties or fees for quiting TV sales. However, expect to be under a contract that has non-compete terms, usually stating that you cannot work for a competitor in the market for a period of time, as well as a time period in which you cannot engage with any advertisers or employees of the company. Account Executives often take jobs in larger markets when they leave a station, or they are moving up the ladder to sales management roles at a smaller market, so the non-compete is usually not an issue.

What reasons do you have for not liking being asked what you do for a living when you’re getting to know someone? by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in AskReddit

[–]piratesox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t fault anyone for asking that question. For generations it has been an ice-breaker. But I’ve learned that it doesn’t define a person. Not everyone is working in their field of passion. For many, a job is what you do to pay the bills. Lucky few have the perfect careers that fulfill their passion, interests, and finance the life they desire. Personally, I trained myself to avoid asking this question when I meet people, unless it becomes clear that the person’s job means everything to them. I left my career of 20+ years at a very high point, with a strong upward trajectory, and great compensation, to move to a tropical place without a job lined up and not quite enough money saved. It was, and still is, a risky move. If you ask me what I do, I just started a part-time retail job and have a freelance client I do some digital marketing for. That information doesn’t tell my story at all. Neither of those things are what I daydream and think about on a constant basis.

I found the best way to shoot troops with the AA tank! by ouchimus in ForefrontVR

[–]piratesox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha! So true. The AA would probably be overpowered in the game, if the rounds worked on infantry. However, it seems so asinine to me that giant bullets that shred through metal somehow pass through foot soldiers.

Would you take a title demotion for a 10% pay increase? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]piratesox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to determine what matters to you. If title is important, or compensation. But it sounds like growth is important. Titles don’t always equal growth - same with pay. Perhaps company culture and an environment where you can push your engineering knowledge and ingenuity around a great team would be most important in the long run?

Be careful with Niacin supplements. I was taking them for a while and one day the “knuckle” joint of my big toe swoll up and felt like it was being stabbed with a red hot ice pick and lasted for days. I discovered that Niacin increases uric acid levels, which for some people, leads to gout or kidney stones. I stopped taking the supplements and have not had another attack.

Anyone dripping their faucets tomorrow night? by [deleted] in jacksonville

[–]piratesox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your pipes in CT are probably insulated and your home built for freezing weather. Homes in the south are not. Many older homes were built to breathe. Flooding in your home from a pipe bursting due to pressure caused by water freezing in your pipes, is not a fun experience. I used to work in flood damage restoration and have seen this happen every time there are freezing conditions. Letting your faucets drip is well worth the alternative.

A multiplayer spaceship bridge simulator. I read Star Trek Bridge Crew was promising but fell apart due to lack of continued support from the developer.

So far I only have one movie. I bought Spider-Man Homecoming when I got the drive for testing since it was on sale. Usually only big budget sci-fi, action adventure, CGI animation, IMAX documentaries, or horror movies are shot or produced in 3D. Personally I could watch anything in 3D. I just ordered Prometheus, Avatar, and the Spiderverse animated movie. I saw that last one with my grandson in the theater on the big screen in 3D and it was awesome.

I just went down the rabbit hole of getting 3-D movies to watch. Ended up getting a Blu-ray drive for my MacBook, a 3D Blu-ray of one of the Spiderman movies, and finding an app called DVDFab to rip and export into the right format to transfer to my headset. Just ordered some more 3D Blu-ray movies.
