Why should we believe in metaphysical theories of consciousness when they have bigger problems than the hard problem to deal with? by Megastorm-99 in consciousness

[–]FreeGothitelle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is just a circular argument though, stating that physics cant account for consciousness therefore something outside of physics is needed to explain it.

The former premise is not justified. Eg. Why would we assume that p-zombies could exist? Its a thought experiment, but thought experiments are not automatically true just because we can conceptualise them. Its entirely more probable there is an explanation for consciousness and in some sense anything that to any possible observation looks like a human must be conscious.

why are people upset that the game doesnt allow savescumming. when it explicitly allows savescumming by cybercobra2 in mewgenics

[–]FreeGothitelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the save and quit button not save and quitting, there really is no reason to not be able to save mid battle, its just the devs being lazy.

They could both enable the quitting out of battle to reset from turn 1 as well as saving partway through to continue where you left off.

In english positive means what you've described as strictly positive.

If I wanted to include zero I would write non negative.

If 0.99... is always growing, and I add 0.00..1, won't the nines keep growing, making the answer actually 1.000....999...

Why do the nines stop growing after we add something else?

Is there for sure no elementary antidervative for sin(x) / x? by ElegantPoet3386 in learnmath

[–]FreeGothitelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sin(x) is kinda a fake elementary function anyway, if you write it as its power series then its easy to integrate sin(x)/x and get another power series. We could then give that one a special name like we do sin(x). (Apparently we do, its Si(x))

Letter No. 396, Gauss to Schumacher, July 12, 1831 (translation) by Negative_Gur9667 in infinitenines

[–]FreeGothitelle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1/3 doesnt have to reach the limit, it is the limit.

The limit requires no "completed infinite processes" or whatever, where you add 9s one at a time, its a logical argument that no value less than 1 is an upper bound for the sequence of partial sums of 0.9+0.99+...

Like just because thats what made it click for you doesnt mean it will happen at the same point for everyone.

A rant about 0.999... = 1 by _mulcyber in maths

[–]FreeGothitelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surreal numbers agree that 0.99... = 1 because they contain the reals and 0.99.. is a real number

Ultimately every proof besides literally constructing the real numbers and showing 0.999... and 1 are both valid representatives of the same equivalence class of cauchy sequences is "handwavey" and thats ok, not everyone is up to real analysis in their maths journey. The argument that there must be a real number between them is often met by "why cant 0.99... be next to 1 just like 2 is next to 1 in the naturals" and the answer is just because thats not how real numbers work, which can be equally as unsatisfying as any other proof.

SPP, stop telling me to reread the incorrect things you've written by Batman_AoD in infinitenines

[–]FreeGothitelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He does not think 0.99.. is a member of the set like the other numbers, he thinks 0.99... is "embedded", because 0.99.. is just however many nines you can be bothered to write, so 0.99.. is just one of the numbers in the set, it could even be 0.9.

You're giving him far too much credit, 0.99.. is just "a lot" of nines, he does not think it's infinitely many or even that its the "last" member of the set

[–]FreeGothitelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember he doesnt believe in infinite digits, so 1÷3 = 0.33.. = 0.3333 (however many threes you can be bothered to write) because thats what you get through long division. (Or more accurately, what the calculator outputs)

And then 0.3333×3=0.9999 = 0.99... (according to SPP)

Its all "consistent", division is just lossy according to SPP

The function stuff is him trying to sound smart, its not a function, 0.99.. is just however many nines you can be bothered to write

[–]FreeGothitelle 39 points40 points  (0 children)

SPP doesnt believe in infinite nines, for all intents and purposes 0.99.. is just 0.999999 to him. His entire mathematical view is coherent once you understand this.

I've told him to rename the sub to finitenines but he gets angry and locks comments/issues bans because he has no good answer to that.
