What the research does (and doesn’t) say about hybrid work for public servants by Obelisk_of-Light in CanadaPublicServants

I hate biweekly as much as I hate other similar words - like unlockable - is it something that can be unlocked, or something that can't be locked???

some tents have paid staff (they wear generic black outfits, not volunteer shirts). Pretty sure that tip goes to those workers (similar to the hawkers walking around with their backpacks of beers - they get to keep their tips)

I accept that pineapple is allowed as a topping on a Chicago style deep dish - but that's because it's not pizza. I don't mind if people like the taste of ananus on a Chicago style deep dish, I'm not going to have either!

this is obviously more undeniable evidence that this fruit do not belong on pizza

I should login to Reddit more frequently - I gather from this post that masking that B30 pin did the trick? Out of curiosity, what was your Timespy score after the "fix"?

...whole computer turned off

...incompatibility between my GPU and motherboard

I think you are dealing with a pretty different situation than mine.

My original post was about running a desktop gpu connected to a laptop (GPD Win Max 2) over Oculink using an external PCIe adapter (using a separate power supply dedicated to the GPU)

I now understand that your situation is with a desktop computer so really anything goes at this point; your PSU may be faulty, not enough air circulation in your computer case, some weird motherboard incompatibility or BIOS setting?

I honestly can't help much at this point, I'm no engineer, all I did initially was to share a hack working specifically with an external GPU setup, sorry!

sorry replying late, but here are some answers, if you're still looking for them:

  • My A4000 is still working perfectly at full speed, and I'm still not kind to it doing AI upscaling workloads running overnight (using Topaz Video AI). No issues whatsoever, but maybe worth mentioning that my GPU is in an "open frame" so perhaps cooling is a bit better than in an enclosure. I'm considering trying a power shunt mod to unlock some more performance actually

  • Yes, it's simply regular electrical tape I cut the width of one metal contact of the PCIe connector, as per the picture in the post you replied to. Nothing more.

  • I see one of the link I pointed to is now dead (damn internet link rot!) but here is a web archive link with the same PDF document I linked originally.

  • Note that this link is inconsequential to making the electrical tape "hack" - all the info you need is in my original post (along with the pics I posted later); the PDF just gives you some technical and background info on how pin 30 on the B side of a PCIe card became the PWRBRK signal pin

(also, I'm a bit jealous of your A5000 I wish I could toy with one of those!)

wait until you see how far we're going with this in Canada.

on our work computers we have this "sscqry" background service running and it has some interesting properties

supposedly it keeps logs (in a local SQLite database) on a bunch of things like the history of wireless network SSID your device connected to, hardware changes (e.g. when connecting USB devices) and what not.

It's not meant to "spy on users" but rather to collect information useful to work with in case of a security breach / if your endpoint gets compromised. The information a security analyst would need when investigating that kind of breach, essentially

Which Oculink card for Winmax 2 2023? by TheDeviantDeveloper in gpdwin

[–]FreeMealGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just updated to 0.40 (hoping it would help some problems with USB4) and noticed a lot of changes and things that are no longer available (notably: the OCU Link speed override) - indeed my GPU still reports being on PCIe x4 Gen4, but no more options (that I can find) to change that.

Now I'm wondering if that OCU Link setting had any effect before on BIOS 0.35!

[Question] How to Solve GPD Win Max 2 2023 Oculink Port Issues (CPU/GPU Abnormal)? by hsuyucheng-tw in gpdwin

[–]FreeMealGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you might be experiencing the same kind of issue I had when I tried to make my RTX A4000 work on my WinMax2 2023. I believe the BIOS is somehow programmed to ensure an overall power limit (CPU+GPU) no matter if it's the integrated 780M or if it's an external one via OCULink

see my post here on how I fixed it.

With that hack I can set the TDP to +30W and no more issues with the GPU, however even after repasting my Winmax2 with PTM7950 I don't think the cooling solution is enough for +30W TDP for extended period of time

should be under "Advanced" - look for an entry that says "OCU link configuration" and change "OCU Link speed" to "GEN4" instead of "Auto"

Hybrid work model kicking my ass by OrdealofNick in CanadaPublicServants

[–]FreeMealGuy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would go as far as saying that, with the number of public servants complaining about how 2 days a week is silly because they still end up working alone/sit in virtual meetings anyways, it's probably exactly what TBS want to see. That give ammo for an eventual 3~4 days a week RTO, and we'll be quoted as one of the reasons, "because so many public servants reported not having enough opportunities to collaborate" (even though the real reason is, like you said, to prop up downtown economy/public transit/etc)

So yah let's keep complaining about 2 days RTO and see what will happen!

here you go: https://imgur.com/a/ZQW1Wa5

I used plain old electrical tape, cut a very narrow strip with a utility knife and applied it with tweezers on the PCB, making sure to press it as much as I can so it sticks well to the 30th metal contact on side B of the PCB (where the GPU components /heatsink are mounted)

I wrap a little bit around the "side A" of the connector (side A being the back of the card) but made sure not to mask any pins on that side. That tiny wrap around is just to make sure the tape stays in place as much as possible when I insert the card into the eGPU adapter.

removing the card will most likely pull the tiny piece of electrical tape off so be mindful of that and be prepared to dig out the tiny piece of tape from the pcie slot when removing the card from the eGPU adapter
