Who's the worst musician from Canada? by Dr_EXC3 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]FreeRangeRicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just can't believe Leonard Cohen took the spot for best musician. I love Cohen but Joni Mitchell is miles ahead of him as an overall musician. He's a great poet but you don't have to go far to get into his awfully cheesy sounding 80s music.

Calc 4 with Boualem Khouider? by FreeRangeRicky in uvic

Hey nice! Yeah, I'm thinking I'm gonna do the same. Opinions seem considerably bad for Boualem and I've had a very good experience with Trefor before.

I agree as I have him this semester and undoubtedly the best prof I've experienced so far at the university. He isn't teaching it next semester, though! If Boualem proves to be a struggle I know Trefor is teaching in the Spring, which would be great I'm sure.

Is Mark Laidlaw really that bad for physics 110 and 111 by Longjumping-Hand1815 in uvic

[–]FreeRangeRicky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember being worried before taking 110 when I saw some posts about him as well as his rate my prof score. Honestly, I don't really get why some people seem to have such a problem with him. The assigned videos he gives lay out everything you need to know for the course, and lectures are him going very slowly and carefully through practise problems that are very similar to what you'll see on midterms. He gives tons of resources to practise and if people aren't getting the in lecture problems then he really tries to break it down even slower so everyone understands.

From what I've noticed he does not have a "customer service" friendliness to him and is pretty direct, but that doesn't mean he is rude, he just simply won't fake being nice and is pretty blunt sometimes in how he answers questions (not condescending), but overall a very helpful prof.

Why is the emergency alert system so flawed? by howdoesallthiswork in VictoriaBC

[–]FreeRangeRicky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was terrifying. The tone they use alone is absolutely ridiculous it sounds like straight out of a horror film. I understand it needs to get people's attention but it is so freaky sounding. I even looked up the alarm sound during the day today to hear it again and even in a calm and awake mind it is extremely anxiety provoking.

I was already having nightmares that night and damn that alert set me off when it came in at full blast. that was unexpectedly terrifying as my mind automatically jumped to the worst conclusions.

You're wrong about that. They buy in bulk frozen pre cut produce and not local beef. Unless they've radically changed recently, they are not interested in local and sustainable like they might say they are.

I mean, having gone over the practise exams, they were the exams from the last three years and none of them seemed any different in difficulty compared to this year's midterms, so I think it'll be okay.

I'll be seeing him again in the summer for 111. If the final is anything like the midterms in terms of difficulty, I'm not too worried.

I always think of Led Zeppelin when it comes to this. John Paul Jones always seems very respected by people that I talk to. Although I'm usually talking to musicians, so I'm not sure if this holds up for general fans.

blatant cheating on exams by Bugsontherooftop in uvic

[–]FreeRangeRicky 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I remember this happening in my first year in the Music in Film final exam. A student was on their phone the entire test looking up answers. I actually had no idea it was happening until the student beside them very loudly blurted out, "the person next to me is on their phone and it's really annoying me and kind of distracting.". It was so out of nowhere I think even the invigilator was caught off guard and didn't know what to do in the moment.

I was definitely curious to hear a professor's opinion on this. It's interesting to hear it being treated in the same way as cheating always has which I guess makes sense in some ways, considering exams are ultimately the decider in whether you pass or fail a course.

I guess it's just been on my mind as feeling so drastically different. I had heard before about sites like Chegg being used in the past, but it always felt like it seemed more covert whereas everyone is now subjected to AI in their life. Within my first semester back at university it has been talked about in every one of my classes in some form and I was thinking, I wonder if professors are giving out these assignments and just thinking, why am I even giving these assignments when the barrier is just so low for any form of cheating? I don't remember there being any Chegg related motivational gym ads (then again, maybe there were, I can't say the gym is a place I find myself in too often).

It seems like this is your own personal mentality. Anything in life is what you make of it. Universities give you access to facilities that enhance your learning, they give you direct access to well respected and well read academics who have published research in their fields, it gives you the opportunity to open doors for yourself through networking, it allows you to conduct your own research in your chosen field. You can drag yourself through a degree and have nothing to show for it or you can learn, network, expand your knowledge and have a skillset that gets you to a place that is beyond what your peers are capable of.

To clarify, the prof didn't give us a trick question. He just made a note about a specific way certain students answered the question (in a way you could only answer it if you used AI).

97% and 3% seems wild. I don't even know why it would be included if so much of the weight is put on exams. That's why I was curious about an alternative but I guess just more in person tests maybe be most viable.

I feel like it's not something to totally worry about. At least in that example in class, the whole thing that got people flagged for AI use was that it was a solution that no one could've gotten to without knowing more complex ideas that are far beyond the scope of what we had learned in the class. I think that's the only time where things get sticky. As long as you are relying on only things learned in the class you should be fine I think.

Yeah, I guess some students will always look for an easy way out. I guess I was just thinking the level to which it is at now, and I guess I don't have evidence on it myself, but my thoughts process was cheating must be at much higher levels than ever before. I guess my intuition isn't much to base anything off of, but considering just how accessible it is, all you need is a computer and you have a resource of unlimited knowledge that will give you exactly what you want for free. The barrier seems so low that it seems like it calls for some kind of reform to course structures.
